Madden Retires

Not everyone likes the guy but he's better than most that have been on the air the past 30 years. He'll be missed. Collinsworth probably gets the Sunday night gig. He gets on my nerves.

Yeah, I liked him in an odd way. I guess because he was unintentionally funny. Collinsworth is a prick, that's got potential to suck.

I was a big fan of madden and loved him on Thanksgiving.

I thought it was a travesty to take turkey day away from him.

im pretty sure the turducken is here to stay. when i first saw this story on espn i read the first two words and my heart sank. i was convinced that the next article about john madden i read was going to be about a massive heart attack that took his life. sucks hes not gonna be on tv anymore, i feel like he really liked the packers and loved when he called our games, but at least hes alive.

I would really like to see Ron Jaworski get the job. He deserves to be around someone that can match his talent and expertise. I hate seeing him rot away on MNF with the boring Mike Tirico, and the idiotic and annoying Tony Kornheiser.

Madden always talked good about the Packers and their tradition,even before Favre showed up.When the Packers where bad he always said it would be great and great for the NFL if the Packers could ever become a relevant team agian.

Sucks to see Madden retire he was kind of annoying at times but he was Madden.

Guess im one of the few people that likes Collinsworth doing color,one of my favs actually.

I'm glad to see Madden retire

He reminds me a bit of Favre. A one time great in his profession, but i started to tire of him a bit the last few years and i'm glad he's going out before large numbers of fans wanted him to be done calling games.

I've always liked Madden, but I'm glad he's leaving when he is. He jumped the shark as a top analyst years ago. I hope Collinsworth gets the spot; he's one of the most knowledgeable and plugged in color guys in all of sports.

Thanks madden for all you gave to the game. I'd like to say you were the Dickie V of pro football - except, you were so much better and greater than Dickie V could ever hope to be. another parallel could be made to President Reagon. A third parallel could be drawn to Brett Favre. You were the best at what you did and popular with everybody. however, the last two years, your age and memory skills were begining to show. the passion was still there , but the performance was not up to the standards of broadcasting you established. from somebody who has listened to you and watched you for the past 30 years, the John Madden of 2008 was not your best year. it seemed more scripted than natural. it was as if you practiced what to say before the game, and then looked for opportunities during the game to start using your scripted commentary/analysis. it was a solid performance, but the timing is right for retirment. you don't want to hang on forever like Dickie V and peter gammons and favre . it is time to pass the torch.

on a related note, I also like Tony Kornheiser, but hate him as a Monday Night football announcer. Tony has a niche and a style. but he's out of his element and comfort zone trying to be a football commentator. I love Keith Olberman. but keith was smart enough to continue to do what he does best in an environment that suits his styles and abilities. rather than being a sarcastic sports announcer, he's now a sarcastic news reporter. It suits his style.

Madden was kinda annoying at times. Yes good explaining stuff on the tv. But annoying at same time. Also had a mad crush for the Cowboys until they got beat by Panthers and we beat the 49ers then beat Panthers to go onto the Super Bowl. He never favored us. I think he held a grudge for the Raiders Super Bowl 2 loss to the Pack. Madden was like some assistant with Raiders back then. I think he carried that grudge with him.

Never favored us? He loved Favre, he loved Lambeau, he was always rooting for the Pack.

He didnt favor Favre and the Pack until Dallas dynasty crumbled then we won the Super Bowl then he hyped us up from there on. But other wise it was Aikman this Emmitt that or Moose this.

Madden, like every other top broadcaster, was always assigned to the best games and therefore the best teams. So yes, he did a ton of Cowboy games when they were good. And they were VERY good. What was he suppose to say about Aikman and Smith? That they sucked? They were two Hall of Fame players. Many also criticize him for fawning over Favre but it's the same thing. The Packers were good, he did a lot of Packer games and Favre was a Hall of Famer.

Curious if Madden will still be part of EA sports Madden football games? Or ya think EA will just make a new trade mark name?
