Before the season began NO ONE would have been saying that Robertson was a better pitcher than Veras... NO ONE.. 2 IP later and people switch sides.. give me a break..
That's not really true. Most people regarded Robertson as the 2nd or 3rd best relief prospect in the system behind Melancon and Coke and thought he would be a factor in the pen this year.
Veras put up a nice K-rate last season and was solid overall but I still see him as a poor-man's Bruney: a power pitcher with command issues. He'll be useful somewhere in the league but i'm not buying him as a successful reliever from year to year. It's true that all we've seen so far this year is a small sample size, but Robertson and Melancon have both been dominant in the minors for a couple years now and the fact that they're coming out blazing in 09 says that they're ready for the big league pen.
The truth is there's no definites here because all of these guys save for Mo and Marte (who might be legitimately falling off) have limited track records in the majors. My view is that keeping Veras up is holding the Yankees back from the best possible pen, though.
