Pacers now have 13th pick in '09 draft...

Post#1 » by DWCP2 » Thu Apr 16, 2009 11:49 pm

Seems to be a lucky number too.

Roughly half the players taken at that spot have gone on to prosperous NBA careers.

Brandon Rush
Richard Jefferson
Kobe Bryant
Dale Davis
Karl Malone
Jalen Rose
Corey Maggette

just some of the prominent names that came off at the 13th pick.

Others noteworthy

Keon Clark
Sebastian Telfair
Sean May
Keon Clark
Derek Anderson
Julian Wright
Thabo Sefolosha

The 26th pick in last year's draft was better than the 13th pick in this draft.

Yeah, seriously. This draft is bad man. I actually like Chad Ford's current mock scenario having us taking Eric Maynor which, I gotta say, I'm completely on board with.

Maynor, Curry, Lawson, really any of those PG's will be great. It's how to get a PF as well as a PG will be key.

If we lose Jack, we seriously need to look at another PG. My pick would be Lawson but the only problem is he's very similar to TJ Ford. I like DeRozan but there really isn't a lot a room for him unless Granger moves to PF (hmm...Tim Duncan trying to guard Danny Granger) which I highly doubt will happen.

It has to be either a PF or a PG. With Greg Monroe returning to college, Jordan Hill seems like the best fit. Hopefully he'll drop like Bayless did last year... another Arizona player could drop to us

I think the most important thing is for us to find a DEFENSIVE-MINDED player no matter what position. We ranked 5th to last in defensive ppg.

Thabeet would be a major help but I hear he has character issues.

Well I guess since the season is over, the ridiculous threads are impossible to avoid.

Wasn't Clyde Drexler a 13th pick too back in 1984?

while power forward is the position of need, I don't see a Dale Davis in the draft unless it is Blair. is Blair a Barkley/Boozer/Gooden type undersized 4 or just another Ike? we may have to go point guard by default.

Definitely wasn't 1984, because that would be the Jordan draft, and the Blazers selected Greg Od--I mean, Sam Bowie.

For now.

In four weeks we will win a lottery pick.

Any of those would be ok but I'm thinking Curry is gonna be huge! Brackins would be my 2nd off that list.

Dunleavy17,

No one on your list could guard a chair.

Any of those and I am in a permanent depression.

How about this:

Sign & Trade Marquis Daniels for a late 1st round pick, such as...

To Minnisota for Brian Cardinal and #28(from the Celtics),
To Memphis for Darko Milicic(or Marko Jaric) and #27 (from Magic),
To Dallas for Jerry Stackhouse and #20.

Thus we got three picks in the draft:

#13 (If we did not win the lottery),
#20~30 (By trading Marquis or even Jack),
#52 (The 2nd round we got from Dallas in the trade of Shawne Williams).

And these are my picks:

#13: Jrue Holiday or Stephen Curry or Eric Maynor or Jeff Teague (for a future point guard)
#20~30: DeJuan Blair or Patrick Patterson or Gani Lawal or Taj Gibson (for the toughness in the paint)
#52: Josh Heytvelt or Dionte Christmas.

This is not a draft where I want multiple picks in. Especially since we had two rookies this year. It would be way too hard to incorporate three new rookies (or two even if the second rounder didn't pan out) with two second year players already in the rotation.

Jrue Holiday is intriguing me most at the #13 spot, mind you it's not really important to worry who will be there at #13 because we're winning the lottery.

I think who we choose will ultimately come down to if we keep Jarret Jack. Although Jack had a pretty good season, I think it would be in the best interest of the team to not sign him to a larger contract which I am sure he will be seeking. Assuming we let Jack walk this leave us with

PG- Ford, Diener, Tinsley
SG- Rush, Daniels, Graham
SF- Granger, Dunleavy, Graham
PF- Murphy, McRoberts, Baston
C- Hibbert, Foster, Nesterovic

With the emergence of Stephen Graham as a reliable bench option and the continuing need to cut salary, I also see us letting Marquis Daniels sign elsewhere. Baston is unlikely to return since he rarely sees any sort of PT. We knew all along Nesterovic was include in the JO deal as an expiring contract to get off of our books. Tinsely and Dunleavy will most likely be taking 2 of our roster spots although they are not in our short term plans. Diener is expected to pick up his player option, and I think we will re-sign McRoberts as a cheap bench player since he has said he would like to stay in Indiana.

This leaves us with
PG- Ford/ Diener
SG- Rush/
SF- Granger/Graham
PF- Murphy/McRoberts
C- Hibbert/Foster

Now it goes with who is available. It may be true that we need a PG of the future but that does not necessarily have to be something that is resolved in this years draft since there do not seem to be very many if any sure thing starting PG's. A post-scoring PF is the starting line-ups greatest need, but again there may not be any starting quality PF's by the 13th pick and we don't need to waste a first rounder on another Josh McRoberts. Foster has shown he is on the decline and I think by the end of his current contract we will be in need of another back-up center, but again there seems to be few quality big men in ths year's draft. So I think it is going to come down to the best player available at either SG, PF, or C... Dejuan Blair may be worth a look, but I beleive we also have 2 second roundes from Dallas from the Shawne Williams deal to work with. That is good since it looks like we are going to have 4 spots to fill. I am going to go out on a limb and sat Stephen Curry may be THE GUY for us at 13. He would sell tickets and he is a combo guard option off the bench who we all know can shoot it.
