Wells' place in Jays History

He's had considerable variance in his performance thus far through his career. It is unlikely he will consistantly live up to the value of his contract. But he still has an opprotunity to play a pivital role on winning Jay teams.

Ya he is overpaid, but he gets paid a (Please Use More Appropriate Word) amount. The guy is still very talented. He plays a premium defensive position, with plus d and the potential for significantly above avg offensive production.

If he has some good years, and the jays have some success, he will be forever cherished.

Wells has had two or three solid seasons; nothing really remarkable and he's been inconsistent as Hell for a long time now. His contract is large and well above his actual value.

Remember, this is a guy who has 2 30+ HR seasons and 3 100+ RBI seasons. He's been up and down as a hitter for average, and that's honestly been his most redeeming trait, because otherwise, he's had three really noteworthy seasons as a hitter in 7 years as a regular player (I'm talking OPS+ of 110+). He's been declining for two or three years in terms of his rate of extra-base hits, homers and RBI, and this is a guy who's benefited from favorable conditions. Middling secondary average, etc, etc.

Wells is a guy who's being paid like a star to produce like a guy worth half his contract. He's a nice guy, he's a good fielder (3 GGs, right?) and he isn't a bad hitter most of the time but he's definitely not been as good a hitter as was Delgado, nor as productive as a guy like Joe Carter.

'Worst contract in Jays history?' Not really, but he's certainly not been worth what he's paid.
