How do you guard Brandon Roy?
This thread is about guarding Brandon Roy.
Is there a way to stop this guy? Artest is a known defensive specialist, and so is
Shane Battier. Roy scored 42 points.
Game 3 is coming. What would you do, as a Rockets fan, to stop this guy?
Putting the double team on him, let someone else beat the Rockets?

I would suggest Artest grind out the calluses on his feet before having to guard a Roy or Bryant. Honestly I think Tru Warrior walks and moves like he's got irritation on his feet.. He got some burning sensation but is too much of a man to get a proper pedicure before games. Otherwise he would be better at shutting down Roy like in game 1 or on a more consistent basis.

Brandon Roy is like a Toni Parker with a better 3-point shooting accuracy.
He loves to attack the basket. Many times he just out runs the Rockets' guard and
goes straight at Yao, getting the contact from the big fella.

Hey you guys remember back in 2006 when Houston had a deal in place with Minnesota to draft Roy and then trade them to the Rockets? And then Portland drafted Randy Foye, the guy Minnesota wanted, so they dealt with Portland?

Not put Artest on him. Artest just lets him go by and relies on Yao for help. Battier makes it tough on him to get the ball and stays with him on perimeter. But by the time Battier got to sink his teeth into Roy he was red hot from all the layups Artest allowed him.

Roy had the game of his career, he aint gonna do it again friday night. Artest's defense is physical and irritating, but when Roy has a bit too much room he gets away. on the other side battier is a brainy defender, who is just as physical, but uses his judgment and predicts moves very well. that's why battier seemed to gain upper hands.
Anyway, i am sure we can limit him next game. David stern wanted them to win the 2nd game, and Yao hardly break a sweat on losing this one. Way to bone up.

I very much disagree with that assessment. Roy is good player in this league...an all star. If you think giving him the type of looks he had tonight won't result in another 40 point game you are mistaken. The one thing about players like Roy is that it doesn't matter where they play. Maybe Aldridge won't replicate his game from last night on the road..but you better believe Roy will if we don't adjust.
And thats my point about Artest. He gives Roy too much room. And Roy goes right by him and then that creates a domino effect which either leads to open shot for a teammate or one for Roy. The question was asked how we do we guard Roy....don't put Artest on him b/c his way of defending is the reason he had the looks he had tonight. Battier needs to be on him all the time. If he is killing Battier then maybe you can change the look. But the way Artest plays defense isn't working on Roy.
And David Stern had nothing to do with last night's game. Both teams got calls. The Blazers just were able to finish. Once that 5min mark in the 4th quarter hit we went where we normally go...faulty execution down the stretch. They went where they normally go...to Roy....he came through while Artest was taking bad shots...Yao was being fronted and Brooks was turning it over. How is that Stern's fault? Yao wasn't in foul trouble until the 3rd quarter. The fronting defense is what took him out of the game.
Now I do expect a better game from us in Houston but you can't just expect the Blazers to die b/c they are playing on the road. Not in the playoffs.

agree. especially now we don't have deke. even when battier is beat he'll at least try sticking/trailing, limiting the path to the hoop and giving the big more time to set up position early. artest was getting beat so bad he was no where in the picture by the time roy was at the rim.
or else, to try to negate the high screen, we could be more zone-ish on the side roy is on and take our rotating chances when the ball swings. cross court pass would hurt us, but our defenders are a little taller than roy, so he'd probably have to pass back out rather than chance it across the court.

Personally I think Artest is an overrated defender, granted hes better than most players but he does a lot of stupid crap that costs us dearly.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
I have one thing to say. Foul shots. These guys are being paid how many millions of dollars, and I see more consistent foul shooting in under 12's. Seriously, at this level, a player should miss maybe one foul shot in 50. there are no excuses for this. We have all heard the Shaq argument, (which I think is a load of crap.) We shoot a bit better from the CHARITY strike, and Roy shooting 40 is irrelevant.
Brandon Roy is a bonafide star in this league, and you do not "shut him down" you only "Contain" him. Let him get his 40 pts, but make him do it on sub 50% shooting. We torched the Blazers in game 1, and based on that performance, it would be naive to think that all our problems are solved with that one victory. As Portland adjusted after game 1, we must now adjust for game 3.
Loking at the Box Scored, it would seem that Roy and Aldridge killed us. that's it. Portland are not going to beat us with two players. Now we go home to play, (Where we have played better this year.) Win these two, and the Pressure is really on.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
If we continue to make Rudy and Outlaw for the most part look non existent we have a chance to win. If we had played Lowry last night at the end, we would have seen a better outcome. I think he would have fouled out Pryz and Aldrige along with Oden. Because he continues to go to the hoop and not stop and throw it away.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
As a Blazer fan I can tell you how to defend Roy.
You allow him to make his drives but force him to go diagonally. Let Yao put his hands straight up and come off of Przybilla who doesn't shoot well and isn't a scoring threat. Then bring one of the wing guys into his left flank so that when he tries one of his spin moves he's sealed off and has to kick out.
The Sixers did this to great effect and I'm sure your coaching staff has it scouted. The problem is that if you don't execute it perfectly he'll kick it out sooner rather than later and you know one of Blake, Batum, Fernandez or Outlaw will nail the open 3 and you lose a point in the exchange.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
Executing is our BIGGEST problem. When Battier is on him, he shoots the shot, and when Artest is on him he takes it to the rim, because Artest gambles too mmuch.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
Jeez, why are you people being so analytical about this??? It's simple. The Rockets guard him the same way they did last night You put Battier and Artest on him. Last night he was on fire and it didn't work. If anyone actually think there's a way to hold Brandon Roy to <.45% shooting every game of this series I've got an island to sell you.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
I think our only option is to keep him out of the paint...
Artest or Batman... need to give him enough space he cant go around them... on the dribble... and force him to take shots from the outside...
bank on him missing more than the... mess he would create if he got into the paint on a regular basis...
if we cant keep him out of the paint... then... we need to try and force him to pick up the ball after he
has started his dribble... attack him... rather than wait for him to get to the basket...and hope you dont pick up a foul...

It isn't stopping Roy. He's going for 30 in every game because Portland needs him to. Just stop Aldridge. No one else in Portland's frontcourt can score within that offense.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
I would put Battier on him primarily, Artest as the second option and stay the course. It's extremely doubtful Roy can repeat this performance. especially on the road.
The only way Portland has a chance is if Roy plays like he did last night. I like the Blazers a lot, but they are still young and depend too much on jumpshooting. A guy like Gerald Wallace would be great for them.

I also like Battier on Roy over Artest but Artest has been guarding Roy all this season which is why I think Adelman stuck with that game plan. It would be interesting if he switches that up. I believe Battier is much better equipped at keeping Roy out of the lane and it's probably better served to have Artest not tire himself out guarding Roy all series.

Re: How do you guard Brandon Roy?
we could try to tire him out on defense as well. post up either artest or battier on him. they're bigger and can wear him down a bit backing him down in the post.
