Boston got snubbed twice, it doesn't add up.

Post#1 » by campybatman » Tue Apr 21, 2009 4:58 am

Boston finished the regular season in 2007-2008 having the league's best record at 66-16. And the addition of Garnett had the biggest impact to a team than any player that year. Boston had the best turnaround of a team from its previous season record wise in NBA history. Yes, the Celtics would go on to win the NBA championship. However, Rivers doesn't win head coach of the year nor did Garnett win the league's MVP. Inconsistent when you consider this season. Cleveland finishes with the league's best record at 66-16. And Mike Brown wins the head coach of the year. While it's presumed that the league's MVP will be LeBron. Cleveland has won the most games in their history. I just see a lot of similarities with both of these teams as far as accomplishments in the regular season, but feel it's unfair and suspicious to why Boston receives no (individual) awards for an alike season. Boston's season last season was far more impressive in my mind. Because they weren't in the playoffs the season before that and Cleveland was...

I know... The past is in the past and what's done is done. Still, I think this is ridiculous and smells of the league having a bias against Boston. If not, how else do you explain the inconsistencies? Kobe didn't deserve the honor ahead of Garnett. If Brown can win the award for having coached his team to the best record. Then so too should Rivers had won it last year. Fair is fair. Unfortunately, it's all about politics.

I reckon the voting committee believed that both Rivers and Garnett, since already winning it once, can make due with that. So, what? They were each on different teams, not Boston. I see no justification in essentially screwing Rivers and Garnett out of their just deserved awards last season.

Rivers received twenty-three first place votes to Scott's seventy. Rivers finished in second place. But, only finishes tenth this year, receiving a mere one first place vote. Wow. Boston overcame key injuries to win over sixty games and battled through a grueling first half schedule. And Van Gundy received thirteen first place votes?

I don't care about all of this that much. I just think it's incredible... Too many things make you wonder about the NBA in a curious way. Perception and politics rule and dictate that which happens in the NBA.

Oh come on...the NBA Championship is the only "award" that really matters. The rest are just a bunch of bull individual accolades. 8-)

Yes...you are totally correct. The rules change from year to year and the reasons change also.
They always have sadly. It's the politics and what makes the best story it seems. Yes...the biggest turnaround should have been rewarded with a COY Award for Doc but he at least got the biggest prize in a Championship. The same goes for KG.

Actually, with 50+ years of evidence to back it up, this is a true statement. Too bad your intended sarcasm just makes you look kinda dumb!

And it looks good on your resume for your career after you retire. I don't know if Rivers qualifies, but Garnett likely will enter the Hall Of Fame one day and they look at your individual awards too. So, yes... It would've been nice for them on a personal level and having the Celtics name on the award is good for the franchise.

You would have to be a real homer not to see the difference between Lebron and Mike Brown doing it with a cast of rejects versus Doc and KG doing it with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, future all-star Rajon Rondo and Posey.

What Cleveland has done this year is mind boggling. It really goes to show how incredible Lebron has finally become. He got 5 years of hype that was undeserved because everybody knew that he would become what he finally has become. The undisputed best player in the league - by far.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

No, you're absolutely right. From top to bottom that might be the worst 66 win team on paper (other than LeBron) yet there they are. It's like that putrid team he got into the Finals a few years back. If they can win a title with a **** cast like that (again, apart from LeBron) it will be a huge achievement...

From an outside perspective:

For the KG MVP issue, one might argue that he had a better supporting cast than LeBron -- 3 future HoFers on the Celtics last year, and potentially only one on the Cavs this year. The Celtics record this year in games without KG offers some support for this theory, as their wasn't a disastrous drop-off in wins after he went down. If LeBron got hurt, the Cavs would be in the lottery. A few years back, when Nash would be hurt, PHX would look awful. Yet the Celtics this season still faired pretty well without their best player. However, that could certainly suggest that Rivers deserves COY this season.

It might seem a little counterintuitive, but the same case about talent can be made for Rivers not winning COY last season. Though some could say Brown coached the superior player this year, Doc's team last year probably had more talent than the Cavs this year, even when including LeBron. It's not about just having the best record, but how well you do with what you have.

With that said, I think LeBron absolutely deserves MVP this year, but personally, I'm not sure about Brown as COY. This doesn't necessarily suggest that the C's were snubbed last year though, in my opinion.

LeBron is the MVP, hands down, and anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot...I cannot stand LeBron but he is head and shoulders above everyone else right now in the league...

As for Brown, I wouldn't give him COY...he's still in all actuality a pretty mediocre coach, although he's gotten a lot out of a **** team...still, there are others more deserving...

You're looking at the end results without any context.

Everybody expected Boston to dominate last year. I wouldn't have voted for Brown, but nobody expected Cleveland to win 60 games, let alone finish with the league's best record. Doc did a great job this year and probably should have gotten more votes, but he's not alone. I don't think Popovich got a single vote, and his team also played well despite massive injury woes.

As for the MVP, KG had a huge impact on the Celtics -- as recognized by his DPOY -- but put up relatively modest stats. That's a big part of the equation, especially when you've got two other Hall of Famers besides you. Especially when compared to LBJ, who just turned in one of the best individual seasons in recent history with a good but hardly great cast around him.

And bias against the Celtics? If that were truly the case why would they name the Finals MVP award after Bill Russell, or have done the same with Red Auerbach and the COY?

I like how when a Boston fan (or any fan) is a "homer" when he or she feels their team or someone of this team deserves an acknowledgment for something or anything. I consider myself one of the few Celtic fans that actually can speak objectively when discussing Boston more times than not.

Not only that, bonsai, it seems to get thrown only at C's fans on these boards...like every other team in the league, all 29 of them, have 100% objective fans!

I guess it's better to win the NBA championship then to concern oneself with an individual award. I mean how often does the MVP and/or Head Coach Of The Year win the NBA championship in the same year? I think, Duncan and Popovich were the last to do so in 2002-2003. It's as if you're jinx by having a player or head coach who wins either award.
