The fact of the matter is that Marbury has never been, at any point of his career, as good as Rondo is right now. NEVER. He had the ball a ton. Took a lot of shots. Looked for assists instead of running his offense correctly. Didn't play defense and didn't rebound. He was obessessed with himself and suffered, IMO, from some sort of mental disorder which is probably being treated now.
Talent isn't performance. Making great individual PLAYS isn't the same as playing a great GAME. Rondo is the kind of guy who can take over a game on both ends of the floor. Marbury didn't seem to know that basketball is a two way sport. Intelligence. Toughness. Leadership. Hard work. Guts. Those count for A LOT in the game. Rondo has that in spades. Marbury, for all of his talents, did not.... and it isn't like Rondo is playing with a deficiency of talent either.
So Stephon comes here, in the twilight of his career, and people want him to be the "Starbury of old". Damn it, I'm extremely HAPPY that he is not. His shot needs to come around, but apart from that he is actually trying to play basketball, not that garbage that he used to do. You aren't going to see Rondo come out of games and see this team get better. Why? Well, Rondo is awesome, and Marbury is not. He is trying hard, though, and can really help us.
Personally, I think that he has been helping Rondo out by giving him advice on certain aspects of the game, too. It isn't as if Steph doesn't have anything to offer Rajon, and I have noticed that Rondo is asserting himself more willingly on the offensive end, and is using some of Marbury's tricks to get shots off and create passing angles. That is a positive influence. Good job by the veteran.
In defense of Stephon, the guy is coming off the bench now (which is a big adjustment), and is having to get used to taking 3 to 5 shots, instead of as many as he wants to. In days gone by, he could have off shooting nights, and still be given the green light. On a team like this, you only assert yourself when you have it going. If you don't, then you go to someone else. Hell, Rondo averaged under 10 shots a game this season. He has taken 39 over the first two games. Do you think that he is doing that if he's shooting bricks? You have to pick your spots on the Celts. I'm sure that Stephon will see his shot start to go down again, but I certainly don't want him "taking over games" if that means watching him just gun all night. He must play efficiently and within the team concept. He is playing as well as he can defensively, which is all that I ask from him. He isn't Rondo, and I don't expect him to be.
The best thing with regards to Steph is to be REALISTIC. He's older, fairly rusty, and was never as good as the guy he is backing up anyways. He is trying to do the right thing, though, and can really help us. My overall outlook with regards to him is positive. At least we have a competent backup for Rondo, which is more than we had a few months ago. Anything more that Steph can bring to us is a bonus.
