RUBIO COULD SLIDE!!!

Post#1 » by revprodeji » Thu Apr 23, 2009 2:04 am

Unfortunately for Rubio, Joventut continues to insist, this time via a notice on their official website, that they are not planning on compromising anytime soon, stating that Rubio will have to pay his buyout in full if he plans on leaving for the NBA. They do appear willing to settle for a smaller buyout in 2010, though, if Rubio and his camp are willing to wait that long.

Would you draft him if you had to wait a year? Next year would be a wash with Jefferson out for a while, brewer rusty, and Pekovic not here yet. But then that following summer we would have a high draft pick, Rubio, Jefferson, Pekovic...WOW

I do it.

What is the protection on the 1st owed to the Clippers in 2010?

Ya, I think we should do that if we are in that position. We still have a couple picks to play around with I think we'd be one of not too many teams that would be VERY willing to pick him in this situation.

I don't think I can watch the Wolves perform at a sub 30 win level for yet another year. It's probably best for the quality of the team in the long run, but yet another season of futility will probably mean the Target Center will be more of a morgue than it was this season. That can't be good for team finances in a rough economy.

I love Rubio, but in this situation I'd rather we take Thabeet or Harden and at least have another fun prospect to watch next season.

I don't think he'll slide. If there is any indication he won't go top three, I think he'd pull out of this years draft which would be a major downer.

The idea of taking Thabeet over Rubio literally just made be barf in my mouth a little bit. No offense.

It seems either way here the Wolves would lose a fan. They take Rubio and wait, Delton moves on. They pass on Rubio for Thabeet and I'm outta here.

Haha, I wouldn't jump ship. It's just difficult to be excited for a team that is so consistently bad (I guess that's why Knicks fans lost their sanity so long ago). And I can understand why people are hardly enthusiastic about the prospect of Thabeet being part of this team but I do think he'll help Jefferson out quite a lot, particularly on the defensive end.

I would definately take him, but in my own opinion, even with that i think a team like Washington would take him, and let him develop while arenas and the rest of the Wizards age, even with their salary issues.

If we have the opportunity i would still do it. We would have another high pick next year barring Al Jefferson playing the whole year, and improved play from others.

but in 2010 we have Jefferson, Love, Rubio, 2010 1st, Peckovic, Brewer, and Cap Space

now another question, if we get the number 1 pick in 2010 and Wall is the clear pick, what would you do? This means you have Rubio and Wall, and neither have played one game for you yet. Do you trade one, keep both, what?

Couldn't this just be like Fran Vasquez part II?

So it comes down to deciding who we want more; Delton or Dr. K?

Rubio's buy-out is 7.8mil, I believe, which just so happens to be the total of the first two years of the #2 pick's rookie deal, leaving him with $4.3mil from the third year. It also gets him one year closer to the BIG pay day of a veteran contract at 22.

Question, though. If he's drafted, but doesn't come over, does that mean we do or don't count him against our cap this year? Could that potentially leave us with like 6-7mil in cap space? More room to make a shrink trade to pick up more assets?

I fully expect the Wolves to suck forever, so really I wouldn't have too much problem with waiting for a year.

I think I've discovered J2J's identity!

Wesley Snipes!

Either that, or he subscribes to the same school of thought when it comes to paying the IRS.

If Rubio owes $7.8 million that's going to come close to his entire after tax income. As far as I know, there is no deduction for contract buy-outs that are not business expenses. Although, what would help Rubio is the $5 million or so Nike will likely throw at him.

Vasquez chose not to come over. Rubio wouldn't declare early if he didn't intend to play in the NBA.

I think it's all posturing by Joventut. A couple NBA people have told me they will end up being flexible on the buyout.

Dr. K, grr, you and your tax law crap. ;-)

Ok, so the buy-out is 7.8mil Rubio's 1st two years is a hair under 7.8mil, plus the Wolves can pay up to 500k of it, so figuring a 35% tax rate, that's 5.57mil, so Nike would need to give him a 3.43mil endorsement deal, that gets him the rest of the way if you're considering tax rates. That or Rubio gets a part time job as a Wal-Mart greeter. :-)

I just figure by June we'll be using that USER TAX that they keep talking about on CNBC. No federal or state taxes, but increased sales tax, basically. Then Rubio's on his own.

Thanks for the info john2jer, I was going to ask how much we could pay of his buyout. I do think it's posturing to a large degree and Vasquez didn't want to come here as was already stated.

Id rather have John Wall than Rubio.

So lets trade up for Rubio this year, than snag Wall #1 next year.
