Breaking: Ryan to the DL

Post#1 » by youngLion » Thu Apr 23, 2009 8:37 pm

Just heard it on the fan. There's no link or anything but I'll update as info becomes available.

I guess now we can really start to new closer derby. I say the top candidates are Downs, League & Frasor, in that order.

When in doubt, head to the DL.

Chien Ming-Wang says welcome to the club, BJ.

Blasphemy! We posted at the same time. I demand a ten-pace gunslinger style showdown to determine the winner of this argument.

Not good....this means Downs to closer and the entire bullpen weakens.

Well not necessarily. Ryan has ostensibly been the Jays worst reliever (by ostensibly I mean obviously) so there's an argument that the bully gets better over these 15 days. Moreover if this actually helps Ryan get better than it's absolutely worth it. Some rest could do wonders.

Why not Frasor? He's done a good job cleaning up Ryan's messes. Or maybe even Accardo is ready? I don't think Cito will mess with Down's spot, he's more valuable pitching extended relief in late innings.

If Accardo doesn't come up now, then there's something seriously wrong with him. And what happened to Brandon League, the closer of the future?

Accardo has actually been totally healthy since last season, but after he had his surgery he couldn't get his out pitch (the splitter) back and that's why he's been mired in the minors. I'm sure that someone will come up but I see him as strictly being a back of the bullpen guy, with Downs, Frasor and League will handle the late game stuff.

Got to be League.

Stick a fork in BJ.

All the relievers have to move up a spot in the depth chart, it will weaken it considerably.

Sure the depth gets a little worse, but they'll bring up Mills or someone like that for that last bullpen spot. Besides I have trouble believing that the bully actually gets worse when the guy they're dropping can't actually get anyone out to save his life.

No surprise here. He can stay on the DL as long as he wants if you ask me. Hand the ball over to Frasor, Cito.

I don't care if it weakens the bullpen, after last night I am glad he's gone.

Send him down to AAA and let him work on his game.

I just realized that Jason Fraser will be very saddened by this. He was already 3-0 from cleaning up BJ's messes; that's on pace to go 30-0!

Question: Do MLB teams have some type of insurance on players/contracts in case they are shelved for a long period of time or can't pitch again ever?

P.S Is there such a thing as short term disability and long term disability payments?

Thanks

thank god. It was very evident that Ryan has had severe problems with his arm and he needs to be shut down until figures out, and if he doesn't...well then that's too bad, guess we'll go on without him. The way Ryan has pitched so far this year the bullpen will be strengthened by this...
