The latest...

Post#1 » by Icness » Thu Apr 23, 2009 8:47 pm

Shameless rumor mongering:

--Braylon Edwards to the Giants is indeed dead. What Sal Paolantonio said on ESPN yesterday is dead on, it's an unresolvable stalemate. That does not mean Edwards won't be dealt though. Or Kiwanuka for that matter, he is being actively shopped. I know Michael Smith thinks the Browns will take a 2nd and a 4th for Braylon, but I really don't think so.

--Brady Quinn is as good as gone from what I heard this morning. The Lions would send #20 for him if they take Curry #1 and not Stafford, but the Browns want a higher pick that would enable them to get Malcolm Jenkins. Cue the 49ers...but don't rule out the Jets. The Browns would happily take #17 and pick Knowshon Moreno.

--The Bengals are indeed shopping Ocho Cinco, without much success. I've heard the best offer they have so far is from Tampa, for their 3rd this year and 2nd next year. That will not get him moved. He moves too much merchandise to give him up.

--Anquan Boldin deal is unlikely, with the Titans and Ravens the only serious suitors I've heard about. Sounds like the asking price is too high.

--To my surprise, the Rams will take Jason Smith over Eugene Monroe. Heard that from two different reliable people.

--JP Losman will be a Panther by the end of the weekend. So will Julius Peppers, still.

--Tyson Jackson will go no lower than 8th. Put that in granite.

Moving up:
Clay Matthews. One Skins person tells me he will be their pick if they can't move from 13.
Robert Ayers
Eben Britton
Phil Loadholt, and I'm talking wa-a-a-a-a-y up
Rhett Bomar
Asher Allen
Herman Johnson
Connor Barwin, maybe
Rashad Johnson, Patrick Chung, and Michael Hamlin, the second tier of safeties.

Moving down:
One of Everette Brown and Brian Orakpo. More likely Brown.
Rey Maualuga. Might well be out of the top 25 if Denver deals for a QB.
Every WR, including one of Maclin and Crabtree. One will be a Raider, the other will be a Jet if current slots hold. I can only guess which goes where, but I think OAK will take Crabtree. The Giants are likely to take a WR (Britt or DHB) at their pick, but only if they don't get Edwards or Boldin or some other veteran. I've heard speculation that OAK will take DHB and I don't discount that, but I'll believe it when I see it.
LeSean McCoy
All TEs not named Pettigrew
Fili Moala
Macho Harris, might go undrafted after entering the year no worse than the #5 CB on any reputable draft board. Ouch.

5 fearless Saturday predictions:
--Michael Johnson goes no lower than 24th overall
--at least half the picks between 16 and 30 will be traded
--the 33rd pick will be Louis Delmas, no matter the team
--Vontae Davis will not be one of the first 5 corners off the board. My saying that almost certainly locks him into HOU at #15 8-)
--Connor Barwin will be compared to Mike Vrabel no fewer than 47 times by the ESPN wonks.

Icness - anything on the Sanchez to DC front? I'm nervous about this b/c chances are they are going to have to give up several picks to get him.

Clay Matthews would be the pick? As in, if all the tackles are gone, he's the pick? Ugh...

So does that mean Davis was the CB who tested positive?

It's going to be interesting to look back at all the rumors. I wonder how much was real and how much was just teams releasing BS to manipulate draft boards. My guess is just about all of it.

Sal Pal is changing his tone Icness:

The New York Giants still have an interest in Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards as Plaxico Burress' replacement, but the two teams are at an impasse in trade talks, according to league sources.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/stor ... LHeadlines

Any chance the Browns can somehow get Kiwi?

I think Kiwanuka is the deal breaker more than the 1st rounder. If CLE would take Kiwi and a 3rd, or just the Giants 1st and a later pick, they might be in business. But they're not getting both, and it sure doesn't seem like Cleveland will take less than that.

I hope Kokinis doesnt back away from his demands either. He has the trade chips and he shouldnt back down.

As for the Brady to whoever talk... I assume this would have to be worked out before they use their first rounder on someone other than Sanchez, as thats the only way I can see Anderson starting for the Browns. So if Sanchez gets drafted before the Brown's pick wouldnt that mean Quinn will stay with the Browns?

This is all ridiculous speculation on my part, or more of an idea, or more a wish that would never happen, but....

The Chiefs have been rumored to be looking to move their pick(3rd overall), so how bout the Eagles trade their 1st and 2nd round pick and maybe a 5th for the 3rd overall and draft Crabtree?

The lions taking curry, and trading for quinn would be awesome for them. Just my opinion.

Macho Harris might not be drafted at all??? Wow.

OK, I have to ask this now because I don't understand...why in God's name do people still consider Brian Orakpo worthy of a top-10 selection?

I guess I just don't get it. The top 3 "pass rushers" in this draft seem to be Orakpo, Everette Brown and Aaron Maybin. Each are expected to move to OLB despite having exactly one skill: rushing the passer. They cannot cover. They cannot stop the run. They've never had to, and all three will likely struggle if past history is any indication. (Kam Wimbley, et. al.) I understand the need for a solid DE, but I see these three guys as one-trick ponies who bring nothing else to the table. Sure, Orakpo's a weight room freak; yes, Maybin redshirted a year; yes, Brown went to Florida State, which to me is enough to knock a round off any draft prospect.

So why are these guys getting so hyped? Do we want to see them fail? Are they much better than I think they are? Please tell me because I don't see it at this point.

Probably because NFL teams are in such dire need of finding a pass rush.

Orakpo has some skill in space but it's unrefined. Brown is dropping, could be in for a long Saturday. If you listened to my podcast with studcrackers or read my "draft balloons" piece, you know my opinion of Maybin.

So I was part of an interactive mock amongst some various people. I had the Lions, Bengals, Bills, Chargers, Eagles, Ravens, and Cardinals. (1,6,11,16,21,26,31)
We tried to do what we thought the teams were going to do, not what we would do. One of the poeple involved was someone from a magazine I'm sure all draftniks have.

1. Lions--Matt Stafford
2. Rams--Jason Smith
3. Chiefs--Aaron Curry
4. Seahawks--Mark Sanchez
5. Browns--Tyson Jackson
6. Bengals--Andre Smith
So far it has played out exactly as my final mock.
7. Raiders--Michael Crabtree
8. Jaguars--Josh Freeman
9. Packers--Eugene Monroe
10. 49ers--BJ Raji
11. Bills--Michael Oher
12. Denver--Aaron Maybin
13. Redskins--Brian Orakpo
14. Saints--Robert Ayers
15. Texans--Malcolm Jenkins
16. Chargers--Eben Britton
17. Jets--Jeremy Maclin
18. Broncos--Peria Jerry
19. Bucs--Brian Cushing
20. Lions--Rey Maualuga
21. Eagles--Brandon Pettigrew
22. Vikings--Alphonso Smith
23. Patriots--Darius Butler
24. Falcons--Michael Johnson
25. Dolphins--Clay Matthews
26. Ravens--Sean Smith
27. Colts--Knowshon Moreno
28. Bills--Everette Brown
29. Giants--Kenny Britt
30. Titans--Alex Mack
31. Cardinals--Donald Brown
32. Steelers--Ziggy Hood

It really changes things when other people make some of the picks!

Oh god no Josh Freeman, not when Monroe is out there. I would rather the team trade that 1st rounder for a 1st next year than to pick up Freeman at 8.

The Jags drafting Josh Freeman is pretty interesting too. I assume the gamble is you can force a trade once you've got "their guy" (NYJ, Bucks, '9ers).

While he has many things going for him I find the financial aspects of holding such a prospect behind Garrard hard to rationalize, even if Garrard is 31. They again I don't really know how much value Smith puts on QB depth and I suppose work ethic is suppose to be one of Josh's strengths.
