Can't they all be like Cuban?

Post#1 » by enigmatics » Fri Apr 24, 2009 5:38 am

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban admitted in an interview with the Star-Telegram that the team has lost money in recent seasons.

"Yeah. We've lost money most of the years," Cuban said when asked about a Forbes report that the club lost $13.6 million last season.

"I'd rather win than make more money. I've got money. I'd just rather win," Cuban admitted.

Very few owners are willing to spend money, the Lakers, Knicks, Mavericks, Cavaliers and Trailblazers are the only teams that do that. Even the third biggest market team the Bulls owner doesn't like paying the luxury tax. Yeah it would be nice if Sarver would but for the 5 teams that do the other 25 teams don't.

Cuban's a billionaire, Sarver's a millionaire. Note excusing Sarver for the crap that he's put us through, but they're not in similar positions of power.

It works the other way too. When you start winning, money starts coming in also.

Has Cuban lost $250 million in the last year, though? I'm not excusing Sarver, but he needs to sell the team.

And how many championships does his team have?? Money does not always win, especially championships. What you need is a wise owner who is not afraid to pay the lux tax at times, but spend wisely on a good players.

2nd of all, the suns right now are the 6th highest paid team. That is not cheap and he has not been cheap to that point. With that said, the suns have the most money next year committed to 9 guys at or around 76mil. Im not defending him because I can’t stand the man and think he has not been that smart of an owner, but like burningheart has said, Sarver has lost a lot of money. To me, it just shows how some fans have no clue when threads are started like this.

he's not cheap, he's stupid. sells picks, and then overpays dragic with the money saved from selling those picks. says "GTFO JOE JOHNSON", and then gives marcus banks a ridiculous contract. trades away kurt thomas + 2 1st rounders, and then trades marion for a $20 million contract in shaq

I disagree that money wouldn't have increased our chances of winning a title when we faced the Spurs. Even with the Horry incident, and in other years, I believe that if we had kept Tim Thomas and Kurt Thomas on the team, we would have been able to beat them--not to mention if we had kept our picks. The spending right now is irrelevant. Too little too late. They started spending the most when Nash fell off his prime. Spending back then when we were legit contenders would have been smart. Right now is stupid spending. So on that front I agree. We have been spending at the wrong time, and on the wrong guys.

like the previous posters said he is just stupid not cheap

he BORROWED money to buy this team, that means he can't afford to lose money which also means he can't overspend no matter how much he loves this game
if he loses money consistently then he will be out of business pretty soon

anyone who thinks Sarver should be spending like Cuban clearly has never owned a business and should never own one because this is definitely not your thing

It was widely known that they didn't re-sign Nash because they didn't want to throw that much money at an aging PG with injury and defense concerns. Every owner has to make decisions to spend or not spend money - its in this case a matter of who is more vocal about it.

Are you referencing the Mavs only trip to the finals in the last decade? I'd be careful with that...

He's also referencing the same Mavericks team that won 67 games and then lost in the first round.

Like others have said, Cuban spends a lotta money but also makes dumb decisions and is notorious for keeping the wrong players.
Trading away a young Kidd was stupid, letting Nash walk for nothing was stupid, trading away Devin Harris + draft picks for an aging Kidd was stupid, overpaying Diop/Finley/Dampier/Stackhouse etc was stupid, still not realizing that having Dirk as your franchise player won't go all the way after all this time surounded by a lotta various multi-talented casts and zillions of cash spent is stpuid.

Teh Mavs have a fuggin 92 mill payroll and their post Nash-walk track record only consists of getting butt-raped by Nashty in the 2005 second round, managing to choke against the relatively weak Heat team in the 2006 finals, getting eliminated by the 8th seeded Warriors in 2007, getting embarrassed again in the 2008 first round, and a 2nd round exit in 2009...

Was Cuban the owner when Kidd left the first time?
