At what point do you start thinking this team is legit?

Post#1 » by s e n s i » Fri Apr 24, 2009 5:27 pm

The last AL team to win 6 straight series' were the '01 Mariners, who eventually finished the season at .717 with 116 wins and 46 losses, before bowing out in the ALCS. Now, it would be absurd to assume the Jays can hover around .700 the entire season, especially with our depleted pitching staff. However a slightly above .600 record should be enough to get the job done. The question I ask is, what does this team have to do to convince you that they're legit?

Hypothetically speaking, if the Jays are still above .600 by the end of May, would you firmly believe that this team could potentially be playing in mid-October?

I'll give them until they maintain a .580 winning percentage after facing the Rays, Yanks, and BoSox.

If they are in contention at the end of July.

they were first in the al east in the last week of july during the 2006 season. still finished 10 games back. THE TEAM IS LEGIT if they continue this well past the all-star break.
How would you describe Raptors RGM forum in one sentence?

The reason I picked end of May..is that if we can be competitive with all the pitching injuries now..
it can only get better right?!?!
I mean Jannsen, Litsch, Romero, and *gulp* Ryan (hopefully being half decent)..and Maybe even Accardo
Will significantly improve our pitching...
If you add the possible addition of McGowan and Marcum..then hey u never know...

That 2006 team was very good throughout the season. They just faded down the stretch after a Milton Bradley HR in Oakland. It would be a huge accomplishment if this team won 87 games like that team.

If this team is .600 through May, I will start thinking that we are legit.

The epic fade is almost a trademark for this team. There are no safety nets until we get into August, quite frankly.

I'm with LLJ; unless we're still going strong (not necessarily leading the division, of course) in late August (say, around my bday on the 24th), then I'll happily believe this team is legit. But we're still missing too many pieces and riddled with injury to believe in them fully before then.

Now, hope for and support rowdily? Right from day one, win or lose. It's the Jays...

But they have a roster already weak to begin with (comparatively) and it's been stuck full of holes now, so in all seriousness, you can't look at this team and even expect a projection to bear out without knowing more about the second half.

Definitely the all-star game. But even if we lost 10 in a row now, Wilner would tell us there's 100+ games left, they're only 7 games behind, yada, yada.

Not until we make the post season... In the division we're in, nothing is over until all the games are a wrap and the dust is settled, among many other reasons

I will give them until the all star break because the Yankees and Red Sox always get hot later in the season.

1. When Romero and at least one other injured pitcher is back in the rotation, and

2. When the team can win at least 5 in a row. Those are the sorts of streaks that instill swagger and confidence in a team, and prove that the pitching rotation is 100% solid.

When a game thread reaches 30 pages. People only jump on the bandwagon when they think it's for real.

July/All-Star break. If the pitching staff can hold up that long, I'll believe that there's enough there to have a chance to make the playoffs. To me, legit means being in the hunt and having serious chance to be in the playoffs, not falling way behind and making a late charge like they have in some other years (and like the Leafs have done in recent years).

a couple of those options aren't exactly mutually exclusive, so it was hard for me to choose.. but i settled on if they are 1st by July...

I'm starting to get annoyed. A grand total of 600 fans constantly show up to the games, even when the team is playing extremely good baseball.

As for the original question, I'd say around the allstar break.

i feel the same way... but the Jays only had 3 series at home (Det, Oak, and Tex), and it's still pretty early... I'd give it more time for the bandwagon fans to jump on and get their asses to the game...

usually they sell very well when Boston and NYY comes... imagine if we're still ahead of them when they do come? it could be near sell-out

I think when they start winning some series against the Yanks/Sox, which isn't til late May I believe. Those are the teams they have to beat to make the playoffs and if they can't then they won't get in. As impressive as 6 series wins is, they've mostly been against mediocre or average teams, but then again it's hard to tell who's good and who isn't this early in the season.

Also, like someone said before, it'd be nice to see them go on a nice big winning streak, but that'll be hard to do with this rotation.
