McGinn- Pack would take Crabtree if he falls

Post#1 » by paulpressey25 » Sat Apr 25, 2009 4:49 am

McGinn has his draft day column online now. He used to get really good inside info and always hit on the Packers pick. His mock is an Insider premium so one of you will have to post it or wait until I get my paper tomorrow morning.

But the main story at the link below has him thinking Crabtree if the guy fell. Otherwise they will try to trade down.

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/43659322.html

Interesting in the article also talks about Raji telling teams upfront about his "frequent" pot use.

If he's the top rated player of TT board and he's there at 9 then it's a no brainier IMO

But the rest of that draft better address the OL, DL and LB positions.

If we were to draft Crabtree, it'd better be using him as a compliment to Jennings. Not as a replacement for number 85.

I think Jennings and Crabtree could be at least as good as Boldin and Fitz. Then you consider Driver is still around. Nelson would have gone round one if the last draft was done over again. James Jones was a standout as a rookie. It would be an absolutely absurd WR group. I think Driver would have to go. Send him to Philly or NY for a third rounder. However, if we could get a first and a third for Jennings I'd probably do it.

I don't know how you can send a guy like DD packing. A guy who is totally committed to the team, and then send him off the moment he starts to decline. What kind of message does that send to the young players. It's not like Favre where he was a prima dona.

No way in hell would i trade Jennings if we drafted Crabtree unless Jennings was just asking for ridiculous money. Crabtree is a fine talent and all, but he's by no means a lock to live up to his draft ranking and many receivers struggle in their rookie season.

Matt Bowen had a good read on NFP on Crabtree and why some highly drafted receivers struggle early and/or are busts. One thing he mentioned and i never really thought about was that Crabtree has almost never faced press coverage because of the offense at Texas Tech. They spread out defenses on every play that couldn't match up with enough talent in the secondary and Crabtree mostly ran to openings in these zones. In the NFL he'll face press man and coverages he'll have never seen

Before i'd even consider trading Jennings, Crabtree would have to prove to me on an NFL field that he can be a No. 1 wide receiver. What a disaster that would be if say Ted did as you said and drafted Crabtree/then traded Jennings and Crabtree ended up being mediocre or a bust. We'd go from a potentially crazy good WR core to having no number one WR and two pretty good but nothing special guys in Nelson/Jones. A fiasco like that could possibly seal Ted's way out the door.

Plus, in a way it's doing almost nothing to better the team. We'd be using a top 10 pick to draft a WR that we'd hope would be around as good or maybe a bit better than the proven WR we are trading in Jennings. We'd also not save much money at WR because we'd be paying Crabtree right around what it would take to just sign Jennings instead. The end result after the trade

Option A
----------------------------------------

1. Replace Jennings at WR with Crabtree at contract numbers for Crabtree in the range Jennings will want.

2. Use the Giants 29th pick on a player and their third rounder

3. We'd pretty much be hoping Crabtree can become a No.1 WR like Jennings is so then you're kinda in effect trading the 9th pick for 29 and a third rounder.

Or option B
----------------------------------------------

1. Keep Jennings and sign him to a contract roughly for what Crabtree will command

2. Draft someone else at #9 that fills a much more pressing need at either OT/DB/NT/DE

3. Extend Jennings and trade down from #9 if a trade is available and use those picks to fill roster needs.

4. Just keep both Jennings and Crabtree in hopes of having a uber dynamic WR core

Given the unproven aspect that Crabtree would be along with everything else involved, i'd take option B of those two.

I love DD but he is 34 years old, great teams to not give in to sentiment, they make hard choices......TT was brilliant in launching Favre, is there really any harder decision he could ever make???

What a disturbing article on the Packers draft plans.

I don't think Crabtree will be there, though, I think some of this is traditional smokescreen.

But I mean, are you serious? No depth last year in the front seven, and we just let Colin Cole walk this year and convert to a new system? We really get younger at WR and trade James Jones, probably for A DRAFT PICK? Oher over Monroe? Really?

Unreal. Just unreal.

The other, almost sadly hilarious part of this, is the rationale for taking Jordy Nelson was of course in case we needed to replace Greg Jennings.

I would take a receiver first next year too, if and when Jennings actually does leave and trade Jordy Nelson for a draft pick in 2011.

But don't worry, I have a strong feeling TT won't be here for another draft if he just ignores OT, DT and LB.

The reason I like to highlight McGinn is that he's been right on the first round choice something like 12 of the last 16 years (I'm making that up, but it is close). Even when the team picked in the 20's, he'd hit on the guy from inside info.

Given that McGinn does not appear to have quite as tight a relationship with TT, maybe the Crabtree thing is simply smoke to try and ensure he goes before the Packers pick and push someone else lower to Green Bay.

Perhaps you should look at Pat Kirwan...he predicted Hawk (easy), but also Rodgers and Harrell....he also predicted Brohm at the end of the first last year.

what is unreal is your ability to whineeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I am not understanding how people love Monroe and his 2 bad knees so much while Oher had an excellent season playing against the toughest competition by far. As far as the defensive line goes you can't just pick any guy to play, you have to be able to EVALUATE talent and none of the d-lineman appear to be elite talent.

Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Michael Crabtree, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jermichael Finley and Donald Lee

That would be a ******* sick core of receivers.

Yep. Totally.

IF Crab is there - there should be someone to trade down with.

Thanks for the tip on that one. I forgot about him.

Here is his last mock link (you guys probably already posted this, but I'm late to the party)

Has us taking Orakpo and letting Crabtree pass us by to #10.

Well there are a whole lot of people that evaluate players for a living that say there are multiple defensive players worth the ninth pick.

Fine, so we'll miss the playoffs another year because of us bringing in no help at obvious weak points and then you and everyone can revel in how smart you are and how no one understands.

Hey I've got no problems taking the best player avaialble if we feel its Crabtree. None whatsoever, just your golden boy is risking his job in a big way.

Amazing this is the only offseason in modern recorded history where not only is there absolutely no FA worth signing, no NFL player worth trading for, but in a new first, there is absolutely no defensive player worth taking a #9. Amazing.

Well, f it, trade down and lets cut some more of the people we traded down to draft two years ago in a neverending cycle of mediocrity.

And dude, your opinion is fine, but so is mine.

95 percent of the mocks out there have Monroe over Oher, as do I. You're not going to believe this, but those people are capable of evaluating talent just like you, for the most part. But we'll see.

huh......they are playing a 3-4 and I just do not see Raji as a dominant nose tackle, there are at least 8-9 talented hybrid ends the Packers can getone later...your sky is falling attitude is really somewhat amusing.....not to mention guys like Holiday and Carter still floating in free agency with there price tags getting lower by the day.
