I'm working on the assumption that ownership is willing to continue to pay luxury tax as long as we are contenders. Luxury tax would be the only obstacle to signing Rondo.

First group, could only trade for Carter, who is too inconsistent, can't play defense, and is more injury prone than Ray.

Second group, could only trade for Manu, but he's also injury prone.

Third group, Mayo is off limits, the others something could be worked out, but we'd be worse. All 3 of Redd, Martin, and Richardson missed more games this year than Ray, so they aren't exactly an upgrade healthwise either. Gordon is a free agent, so his future is up in the air.

Therefore, of we traded Ray, we'd most likely have to move him for someone who could start at another position, and start Tony at SG. The only guy in our starting lineup I could see coming off the bench is Perkins, but what team is going to trade us a talented starting center for Ray? A talented starting center, who'd also need to have a jump-shot to counteract a TA/Rondo backcourt.

Hey somebody actually has an intelligent & insightful reply. I'll be damned.

I agree that I have no interest in V Carter. He doesn't make us any younger or any better. I'd have to get Lopez back in that deal. The 2nd group of guys don't make us younger either.

As for that third group of guys. I'd be interested Richardson or Martin especially if we got another young contributor as well. I'd definitely do Richardson & Barbosa or Martin & Noccioni. As I said before, I'd even consider Gordon + someone like Deng.

Ray IMO, is a better fit for us than Richardson is. Getting Barbosa would be sweet too..but Phoenix is old enough as it is..why would they trade two younger players for an old one??Ray sure as hell is better than Martin and Nocioni..so I wouldn't even think about doing this..Martin is friggin overrated..I don't like him at all..Gordon+Deng I would do in a heart beat..we could start Gordon at the 2, he has better defense than Ray, and his shooting is just as good so that would keep us in good shape at the SG. We would also get Deng to back up Pierce and I think Deng is friggin nasty. But how realistic do you think that would be? I don't think Chicago would do it..but if they did you got to take it...but seriously..the chances of shipping Ray out of town, and getting better + younger right on the spot, are really, really difficult. That's why I'd rather just keep Ray, sign a FA and play next year with the team we have.

The Celtics organization has been paying luxury tax, but not to the extreme you are suggesting. In fact, the luxury tax treshold is going down, so all of the long term players salaries ($18-19Mil) you would have to take on, would count as double against the spend. If we keep Ray, he will likely re-sign for $8 to $12 Mil.

So you are saying that not only would we be fortunate enough to land a Joe Johnson - Al Horford deal with Ray and a draft pick or two, but we'd also be willing to eat $14 Mil to $20 Mil a year in additional costs. Oh and Horford is on his rookie deal...

The Celtics have taken advantage of the NBA loan program. Do you really think they are in a position to spend like that? I don't.

That brings me back to my original point. We will not trade Ray. We will use his expiring to sign Rondo and keep the starters intact, then use the bench player expirings and the bench players and draft picks we do have, to upgrade key positions and save $14 Mil to $20 Mil a year versus what you are suggesting.

Ray Allen is going nowhere, these trade threads are dumb. IMO.

^I keep waiting to hear who this mythical "player" who will bring as much to the table as future HOFer Ray Allen that another team would be super willing to give up in a straight-up trade for Ray...when pressed, the haters are always magically silent *crickets chirping*
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

If you guys want to go younger, PHX would be interested in Ray's expiring in exchange for Jason Richardson.

Ray and Rondo for Wade (other parts would go each way)

It's like Jefferson for Garnett, Part II.

Um.. why would Miami do that?

I love Rondo, but Miami would need a huge reason to do that.

Ray is playing out of his mind at the moment. Why, for the love of God to we want to trade him?

Alright, the question was what COULD we get not SHOULD we trade Ray. Questions like this are one of the main points of realgm. When we were terrible thinking up trades was about half of what went on here, so this thread is legitimate and doesn't need to be flamed.

I think it is going to be hard getting a good deal for Ray because he has value as an expiring AND as a talent. Maybe a deal could be aranged if there is someone in the draft Danny likes and a team that thinks it is a Ray Allen away from being in the playoffs wants to make a deal. Maybe some sort of trade where we take on a bad contract, someone who we gamble could turn things around in green.

Or what about Ben Gordon strait up SnT? thats my best guess for a functional deal. Maybe we get something else in there, but I don't know who or what.

The Ben Gordon trade straight up sounds good... but not at Ray's price. If only CHI had the caproom to absorb about 3~5 million...

One potential trade is of course the debacle in PHIL. It appears they only work in fast break schemes. But their #1 option in Iggy really isn't that type. They're upcoming star Thad Young plays best at PF but they just signed a franchise player that forces him to be a SF. And no one there can shoot a 3 outside of Young to help their long range challenged core of Andre Miller and Iggy.

Well..... I think you can see where this is going.

Ray Allen for Elton Brand and Willie Green.

Ray will be an expiring and with great service from Miller will be the focus of their half court offense [aka everyone will be setting picks for him and 2 great ballhandlers will keep him out of that role]. And PHIL can go back to the strong fast break team. With their upcoming star moving back to the PF role. And keeping the junkyard dog Reggie Evans off the bench. Also Iggy is a great defender that can take on the shut down role defensively against any SF/SG in this league.

For the Celtics, we change the philosophy of the team a little bit. Pierce is our closer. Brand is our inside work horse. KG is a little bit of everything. We go small ball with Brand at Center KG at PF although since they are the best at rebounding... we won't lose the boards. Perk is our 6th man who brings size when we bring shooters in off the bench. Rondo because the focus offensively, since we'll be running after every rebound and Rondo can be a one man fast break even though our bigs of Brand and KG will be very usefull.

We'll have to find a dead eye SG in free agency. Luckily a Danny Ainge type player is the easiest player in the league to find.

Also, Brand may of just had his first real injury year... but so did Pierce a year ago. And this lightens the miles on our BIG 3 [Brand,KG,Pierce].

With the emergence of Rondo, it's something to think about.
