Re: Quinn Johnson thread
Analysis
Positives: Compact, thick build with good arm length. Lines up in the I-formation and as an H-back. Lowers his shoulder, delivers a good pop and brings his hips against linebackers in the hole. Can be a missile when decisive on who he will hit. Willing special teamer with good straight-line speed for his size.
Negatives: Only adequate height for the position. Lacks flexibility needed to adjust to linebackers and safeties at the second level. Likes to hit his target, but fails to use his hands to ride him out of the play or sustain the block. Hesitates to find a target at times when no one comes into his area. Very inconsistent hands out of the backfield; not a natural receiver. Lacks elusiveness in the open field, although his size makes him tough for defensive backs to bring down. Will hit, but usually not wrap, returners in the open field.
Compares To: LOUSAKA POLITE, Miami -- Like Polite, Johnson is a punishing inside lead blocker who loves to hit. He lacks any sort of running or receiving skills, which will limit how a team will use him, as most now regard the classic fullback as an endangered species. With his marginal speed and tight hips, he can't be used as an H-Back or in the slot with much success. However, if you need someone to consistently clear the rush lanes, he is the best doing that coming out of college.

Re: Quinn Johnson thread
I like the pick, but I'm somewhat surprised. He doesn't really fit the Packers scheme because of the lack of offensive ability outside of blocking. Either the Packers don't care or they think he can develop into a pass catcher. But make no mistake, he's going to be one of the very best lead blockers in the NFL in the near future.

Gonna be good on ST right away while he learns, got a jump on someone like Hall because he converted in college.
Only benched 16 reps at the combine, but I like the pick. Smash-mouth guy perfect for us and could be a nice long term answer at FB.

I think he can catch, although not really yet. Forget the game but I saw him catch a nice one out of the backfield one handed...

Quinn Johnson | L.S.U. Tigers
Official Bio
Stars
Strengths:
Excellent size and bulk...A dominating lead blocker...Powerful ball carrier...Very physical and aggressive...Terrific special teamer...Has some potential as a goaline specialist ...Team player... Top intangibles.
Weaknesses:
Very little experience running the ball...Does not have very good speed...Won't offer much as a receiver out of the backfield...Limited athletically...Is still relatively raw...Won't be a good fit for every team.
Notes:
Was a high school teammate of Tyson Jackson...Began his college career as a linebacker before moving to fullback in 2006...Finally got more of an opportunity to contribute in 2008 and responded with a strong senior campaign...Plays the position with a defensive mentality...Certainly not the type of versatile threat that most teams are looking for at fullback these days....Basically a one-dimensional blocking specialist ... Could make an NFL roster in the right situation.

Rashad Jennings was still there. He's my favorite sleeper of the draft. Don't like this pick at all.

There was mention that McCarthy wanted to get more physical at FB, so he will likely bring that. Maybe beat out Kuhn? Or start on the practice squad.

He is not what McCarthy is looking for...he is apparently a runner more than a blocker.

per Edgar Bennett...tough, great attitude. Competition will make team stronger, thinks he can catch, and has shown ability to run.

Too one dimensional. Dime a dozen. If he can only do 16 reps, he isn't going to blow up anybody in the NFL.

Blowing up somebody on a lead block comes from the hips, not the chest.

Actually it comes from both. Obviously he doesn't spend as much time in the weight room as he should.
I don't like one dimensional fullbacks in goaline situations. They give away where the ball carrier is going. I'd much prefer 2 TE sets or an H back that you have to respect in the passing game.

I like this pick quite a bit now that I've had the chance to digest everything. I think he could play a pretty big role next year. I was not impressed with our FB blocking last season. They had too many missed blocks, and neither guy was overly physical.

We really don't know yet if Johnson's lack of pass catching was a result of inability or a result of LSU never using him that way. Regardless, what the guy benched at the combine isn't indicative of the type of blocker he is.
