MIN - SA

I thought this idea was unique, and interesting enough to discuss.

Spurs get:
Mike Miller

Wolves get:
Bruce Bowen
Kurt Thomas

WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE SPURS:
Miller would give the Spurs some perimeter scoring lost by dealing away Manu. Health will remain an issue with M&M (just like Manu), but it's a risk worth taking. Besides, his deal expires in 2010, so it's not a major investment.

WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE WOLVES:
Bowen and Thomas are experienced, playoff-tested veterans who could play a major role in molding the Wolves young pups. Bowen could mentor Corey Brewer (and the wingman they take in this draft). Thomas could mentor Jefferson and Love. This also opens up more time for Foye/Telfair in the backcourt.

So we could discuss it strictly on talent, or we could discuss it financially too ..

Miller for Bowen ($4.4) + Kurt Thomas ($3.8) + $1.68 mil TPE

While Bowen's worth the $4.4, his deal is only guaranteed for $2 mil if waived before 8/1, so that could be an additional $2.4.

$2.5 .. MIN's current space under the cap
$1.68
$2.4
$6.58 mil total under the cap.

Mike Miller for Kurt and the opportunity to offer a deal more than the MLE? Not too bad.

Also, if MIN is looking for cap space, they may prefer Oberto over Kurt Thomas, since Oberto's $3.8 mil deal is only guaranteed for $1.9 mil. Pluck another $1.9 mil on, and it brings it up $8.48 mil. The Wolves could use this to go after someone like Marvin Williams, or use the pieces to other teams that can do something with the salary reduction, like teams with lux problems.

It was an interesting deal, and something I never heard of before. Thoughts?

I think it' will make us improve a little bit, but I feel it's a short term solution. We would benefit for 1-2 seasons (assuming no injuries to their 36 and 37 year old bodies). By the time our guys develop (along with our new pick), they will be gone.

I don't worry too much about next season's record, but what do you think about the concept of Bowen helping Brewer, and Kurt Thomas helping Kevin Love longterm development as a pro?

I have always been skeptical of the tangible value of veterans mentoring young players. If the Wolves choose to deal Mike Miller, I would hope that it would be in a move that would benefit the team in the long term...not a short-term change that may not translate into any real advantage for the team.

It is a unique trade idea, however.

I always debated that myself, because a player like Bowen would reduce Brewer's minutes.

Plus, I don't think Brewer can jump that high

What would the Wolves have to add to get George Hill included? Telfair+miami pick? Them adding a future first and the Wolves adding Pekovic?

Doubt Bowen can get that high off the floor anymore.

I'm with Calrissian - assuming the Woofies draft a PG, I'd be in favor of getting Telfair and Hill involved in a deal like this. Otherwise I'd pass.
