Sounds like Harpring is retiring

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 11:34 pm

I heard on the radio that Harpring has said that he most likely will not play next year after all the trouble he had in the off-season just this last season with the infection and what-not. It is sad to see him go, he was always one of my favorite players, but at least that means 6 mill not on the Jazz books next year. Maybe we will be able to keep everyone after all.

Well financially this is great. He had a great year this year in limited minutes. Or maybe it just seemed like it since the missed layups were way down. Harpring = reason why LA didn't sweep us. I will miss Harp, but with his production (down due to an unfortunate injury) he's not worth 6 million per year.

If Harpring retires his salary still counts against the cap.

It only counts against the cap, but you can make an agreement to buy them out or have some kind of agreement in place to not pay the full salary. Harpring seems like the type of player that would want to help Utah if he did retire. The contract is also an asset that we could throw in for a deal if necessary, ala Brian Grant few years back. It would count against the cap, but the money we would save on Harpring could be used to pay w/e luxury tax Utah may go into for the 1 year.

Mad props to Harp. He brought it every night when healthy. This is a little off topic, but say everyone ops out. Will the Jazz have the money to be players in free agency? I like Odom a lot.

This makes me sad. He had numerous flaws, yet he knew how to play around them. He did a lot more with what he was given than many players in the league. Just look at the spark he gave us in game 3. He will be tough to replace in that regard. I only hope that something good comes out of it with salary to make this worth it...

Odom has actually stated he's willing to take a pay cut to stay in LA. There's no way he's going anywhere else, he loves it there and is one of the more popular guys in the the Laker lockeroom.

Maybe he will be an assistant coach. He is one of Sloan's favorite players

I heard him say he didn't think he'd play another game while he was getting surgery on his infection last year, but I didn't hear anything about him not thinking he will play next year.

I won't be surprised either way on what happens.

okay so lets look at an update for the jazz players under contract.

Deron
Brewer
Miles
AK
Koufos

hmm at least we could runa starting lineup I guess. Sucks for harp but I kinda figured it would be like this.

Yeah I think this thread is a little pre-mature and as many others have said there is no salary cap relief.

Korver won't opt out, Okur I don't know, and Boozer is likely to stay with a new Jazz contract.

Jason Kapono got 3-year 18 million deal. Korver can get something like this too, IMO.

Not in this economy. Nobody is going to take a risk like that on a guy who didn't do anything all that memorable this year.

Look for him to re up his contract, I wouldn't be surprised if he is in Utah a very long time. He needs to work on his ball handling, but I love everything else he brings to the table.

Harpring told newspaper writer he is coming back, as he doesnt need any surgery in the off season. So I have heard that he is coming back. At the beginning of the year, I wanted him out of here, but his willingness to play hard every game might be needed in practice so the slugs Loozer, Ak-47, and others learn that playing is something you do every play.

Everybody in the league sees how grossly overpaid he is too.

Explode this team. My opinion (and I know I'm not alone).

Players to keep:
Deron
Brewer
Milsap

I think the rest of the team is pretty much expendable. Remember, just my opinion.

Jason Kapano also got that money coming off a career year. You cant say that for Korver.
