what player(s) do you think the Hawks can get in return if Josh was on the trading block?

I'm a Smith fan, but I wouldn't be opposed to trading him if it was an obvious upgrade, just as with every other player.

But, anyone trying to trade him for a center just so we can move Horford to the 4 (who has proved nothing at the position) is making a huge mistake.

I hate to answer a question with a questoin, but what defines a Josh Smith hater?:

Thinking he is a garbage player that is overrated and over paid?
Thinking he is a great roll player who just isn't that star and leader that will carry the load night in and night out.
Thinking that he is not untradeable
Thinking that it would be better to trade him than Horford based on what they bring to our team
Thinking that it would be better to trade him than Horford based on Smith possibly having a higher trade value due to his flashier style of play.
Thinking that he could be an essential trade piece to possibly bringing in a second star player.

There are a lot of different degrees of respect for Josh Smith in those of us who think that trading him is an option. I'm just curious as to what constitutes hating as all of the above seem to sometimes be lumped into that category.

Same here. I'd trade anyone on the team if I were sure it would make the team better.

Such protestations.

A Josh Smith hater is someone who DISAPPROVES of Josh Smith. This disapproval becomes irrational (since it's based on feelings) and the hater begins to look for reasons to criticize him. A Josh Smith lover irrationally looks for reasons to praise him.

Me? I think his heart's in the right place, so I'm inclined to overlook his mistakes, and credit them to his youth and extreme passion.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Josh Smith = JR Rider part 2

its a shame he doesn't have a head to go with all that talent

I'm not a hater. I know the warts are there, but he does a lot of good things too. I'm focused on suggesting things to make him a better player and even a bargain (less complaining, more focus of getting to the line and making it, and taking out frustrations on the defensive end).

As for trades, between BYC and economic considerations I don't think you can get good trade value at this time. I would still evaluate all options though just in case.

I'm waiting for Skyhawk1 to chime in on what he thinks Josh Smith could fetch in trade.

My biggest problem with Isaiah was the stuff he did off the court, which isn't an issue with Josh.

Wow, that is an unfair grouping. JR Rider had drug and violent crime issues. Josh Smith shoots too many jumpers and commits too many turnovers. Not even remotely close.

I dont think im a hater but im sure clsoe to it. Im just frustrated with him. Watching the game last night and listening to the annoucners, they said he is so much better taking the ball to the rim and not shooting jumpshots. So one possesion he shoots and airball jumper, and the next he takes Mike B off the dribble and lays it up. Its just frustrating to watch him cuz i know what he can be. with that length and athleticism he shouild be an allstar.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

This really isn't even worth addressing because it's so dumb. But I think Evil hit the nail on the head. You're comparing a guy who is emotional and makes dumb mistakes to a guy that was a bad person (committed serious crimes) and a bad teammate (missed practices routinely).

i'm not trying to be snide, this is a legit question. are the haters suggesting the Hawks trade Josh for:

Kaman? - with Baron and Zach, i'm not sure if the Clips would want Smith's contract
Biedrins? - i think GS are happy with their young forwards
Nene? - don't think the Nuggets would give up a center
Okafor? - also not sure if Cats do this
Jamison? - trade defence for offence
Bogut? - same as for Nene
Shaq? - ATL want to take a play with a big contract for one year until retirment

i mean who are the players you are suggesting when you say "Hawks should trade Josh Smith"?

if you are not suggesting players in return... then you are just whining

honestly, who is the player you want on the Hawks, would a Josh Smith trade work on getting him, and does that player make the Hawks better???

My theory for years has been that the Hawks should have gotten a center while their value was low which would allow more flexibility when it came to dealing one of Smith/Horford(maybe for a young pg) and then the other could stay at the 4. The reality is that guys like Haywood ,Chandler, and Nene were available for scraps at one point or another...and the Hawks simply showed no interest. If you are counting on trading either Smith or Horford for a center of comparable skill who has no red flags what so ever...then you are out of luck. Good young centers w/o risks just don't become available. Just look at how much Bynum and Bogut got paid. We are better off staying with a small frontline than just trading Josh for someone who isn't as good just because he is a true center.

Had this on the trade board some time ago

Pistons trade: Maxiel, Amir, TE
Pistons get: Josh Smith, Claxton

LAC gets: Amir, TE
LAC trades: Chris Kaman

ATL gets: Chris Kaman, Jason Maxiel
ALT trades Smith, Claxton

^ that brings me to another point, why would Zaza/Horford be better than Smith/Horford, because if the Hawks traded for Kaman, he would be injuried by now and half the season and playoffs would be Zaza/Horford.
