Hollinger hates Deron part 351

Post#1 » by awesomator » Thu Apr 30, 2009 8:47 pm

From his chat today...

Cooper (Halifax NS Canada): Chris Paul = great regular season player Deron Willimans = built and made for playoffs

SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:42 PM ET ) Compare their playoff stats -- Paul's are still vastly superior.

My email to him:

"Compare their playoff stats -- Paul's are still vastly superior."

Maybe you should compare them. Not only has Deron lead his team to TWICE as many playoff appearances, but their stats are almost identical.

21.9 11 4.8 2.1
20.2 9.4 4.0 1.2

Shooting %s are nearly identical as well, except 3PT in which Deron is killing CP at 41% vs 27%.

Now how is that "vastly superior", especially considering their win/loss (.57 vs .47)?

You have such a serious man-crush on CP. It's sad really.

Paul is vastly superior, stastically, and that's what Hollinger is all about.

Well, maybe Vastly is overstating it. But, Paul is CLEARLY superior, stastically.

I think we overrate deron. How many dumb passes did he have? He did not play that great during the playoffs. I wonder if Fisher had the same amount of shots that deron had, how close those two stats would of been.

Deron not as good Paul now but over long run Paul loses speed then his lack of height becomes big issue. Deron is a much better investment for the Jazz BUT Deron needs to want to be great as such improve defensively and decrease turnovers. Jazz offensive rigid system not good for a young player like Deron either.
Top 4 seed in the West!!! Guaranteed!!!

Clearly... By 1 1/2 pts, 1 1/2 assists, 1 reb, and 1 steal. Statistically their playoff performances are nearly identical, especially given Derons much better True Shooting %.

Even Hollinger's precious PER has Deron ranked 27 in the playoffs vs CP 51.

Yet somehow Paul is vastly or clearly a better playoff performer. When does Jazz season start? I'm bored of the offseason already...

Did you watch Paul this post season? And LOL at Fisher having the same stats.

CP3 had an amazing post season run last year. I don't see how he is hating.

Duiz: Um....no?

Here are their numbers for last years playoffs:

24.1/11.3/4.9/50.2%/78.5%/23.0% 3pt/eFGs 51.3%/TS 56.5%...FT Rate 1/2.77
21.6/10.0/3.6/49.2%/77.3%/50.0% 3pt/eFGs 56.8%/TS 61.1%...FT Rate 1/2.79

And here are their numbers for this year:

16.6/10.4/4.4/41.1%/85.7%/36.4% 3pt/eFGs 44.5%/TS 50.5%...FT Rate 1/3.48
20.2/10.8/3.8/41.5%/82.9%/36.0% 3pt/eFGs 47.9%/TS 57.4%...FT Rate 1/1.71

As you can see, the numbers for last year were pretty close, with Paul scoring and dishing a little more, but Deron scoring at a much more efficient pace due to 3 point shooting. Slight edge: Paul

This year, Deron is significantly better. Scoring at a much higher rate, dishing slightly more, and scoring significantly more efficiently due to both the number of three point makes and his ability to get to the line with frequency. Big Edge: Deron.

Add in the fact that Deron has played a significantly tougher schedule, both from defensive opponents faced and overall quality of team and you have at least a very small edge to Deron Williams, from a purely statistical standpoint.

Though, after the rough time each had against their respective 1st round opponents, now is not a great time to do this.

BTW, Deron also kicked the pants off of Paul in PER this playoffs. And here is an even more interesting stat for this year:

TO/game

Deron: 4.2
Paul: 4.8

Paul was riding the coattails of last years success all season, while he did have another good year statistically his team really underachieved. Even though Chandler missed quite a few games, that team still should have had a better record with the addition of Posey.

Any PG that would let their team lose by 58 at home (his numbers were atrocious as well) should not be considered to be a great playoff PG. Period, end of discussion...

The Paul vs. Williams argument should be officially over because Rondo is playing much better than either of them.
