What the heck Mods?

Post#1 » by Nutty Nats Fan » Sat May 2, 2009 2:24 am

One of you lock a thread about Melo being out of the 1st round, claiming it should be kept in the series thread. Yet, the same Mod doesn't go through and lock all the other threads that should be locked using that standard.

The OP of that thread can't use PM's so asks why this happened, thread locked. No response.

Now this thread about Melo is locked.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=901058&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

No reason was given. It isn't about him being out of the 1st round, its a discussion about him. A GOBAL MOD and Forum Mod had even posted in it. So wtf? I'm sure most mods are good, but just because you hate a player is no reason to lock a thread other Mods had no problem with. Doing that just makes all the mods look bad.

You should at least have the balls to explain why you lock something, then apply that same standard to all threads.

That's not too hard, is it?

Seems that way.

Oh there is a F&S section?

So thread moved, not locked. That's better, but no reply either?

Not trying to sound mad, but locking discussions for no good reason causes posters to get upset.

Why lock a legit complaint?

Would seem someone thought so, since they didn't lock it, just moved it.

Moving this thread to the feedback and suggestions forum - the GB is not the place to talk about these matters.

Regarding your specific topic, you're right that there needs to be more consistency. You're also correct that explanations, unless in extreme circumstances, should be given when locking a thread.

However, different mods have different ways they think a board should be run. Though the goal is consistency, there will always be instances where one believes something should be locked and another believes it shouldn't. Not actually being involved in any of the threads in question, I can't say for certain if that was the case, but there's a pretty good chance it is.

Point noted, though.

Ah, I was a bit impatient. You moved the thread, then were typing up a response. My apologies.

I do agree, mods will have different ideas of how things should be run. And consistency may not always be there. I use to moderator for a busy board too and the politics was not worth it at times. So certainly not trying to make life harder for you mods, but I really see no reason why the thread I linked too, should have been closed. Definitely not being consistent or close to it there.

So it'd be nice if the Mod would man up or even better, an Admin ask this mod to chill or face de-modding. :D

Thanks to Nutty Nats Fan for not letting this die. I was about to give up.

The final insult to injury was seeing my thread asking about the subject locked without any explanation. Not trying to be rude or anything but I thought that was a total **** move.

At least in the past when I've had questions I could PM a mod and get an explanation. I even changed their minds a couple of times. Now that's not possible. Not sure why.

I don't buy into a conspiracy that RealGM hates the Nugs but...magnumt and whoever locked my thread...pretty weak.

I have trouble understanding the mods of this forum. Some topics are locked without reason, and sometimes the reason has nothing to do with the locked thread. There are times when a game that was played is brought up, but not to talk about the game. Rather to spark conversation about a topic that relates to the NBA in general and some mod comes in and locks it ordering the conversation to be put into the game thread. When said convo is not related to the game specifically...

And then there are the Kobe and Lebron threads. They get locked really fast, yet mods are completely ok with threads 10 pages long bashing Oden or some other player/fanbase. I won't name mods, but the consistency is terrible and there are a few who are drunk on their power to lock threads. There are even some who do a lot of trolling against other teams but if someone even mentions their team in a negative light they get warned or the thread is locked by them.

There are mods I like as not all of them are this way, but a lot of them are pretty bad around here...

I haven't locked the Melo threads, but I'll say part of the problem is the amount of threads that are made, we are bound to miss some things, especially if specifics aren't reported.

Really though, we snuff out a lot of threads we think can lead to problems because we don't like suspending guys during playoff time, so we try to knock out anything before it becomes a problem.

The playoffs get a bit intense on the boards, I kinda am quicker to lock things during this time before guys have to be suspended.

It'll be a little hectic for a while, bear with us a bit, we'll get it sorted.

Yeah, that's the main reason I created this thread.

I wasn't going to create another thread until that happened. At most, I was thinking of posting in all the other "should be locked" threads saying they should be locked and kept to the series thread.

Yours at least had a reason, just not equally applied. This thread, there was absolutely no reason for it to be locked (which is why the Mod did it in secret I'm guessing). There was an actual discussion going on in it. Quite annoying when a mod abuses like that, wasting all the time we spent reading and replying to a thread.

Oops, you replied while I was replying.

One of the Melo threads should have been locked (it was created to bait). The being out of the 1st round one, while I can accept the reason given, magnumt should have locked all the other threads "breaking" that rule. The one above, I see no reason for. The title could be seen as bad, but we had a real discussion, with long posts in it.

Do understand it can be hectic, but.. little mod policing might be needed? Or one mod can step in and unlock a thread, especially if there are complaints and the mod who did it, couldn't be bothered to explain the to the posters why it was locked.

I made a thread asking for advice on how to get play-off tix since the Lakers are selling the tix round by round so more fans cans go. Locked twice.

I missed out on 2nd round tix but if the Lakers make the finals I will be there in person. It turns out go to ticketmaster on Sat at 10am pacific w/ your account preregistered and get your tix before 10:01.
1st round tix are the SAME PRICE as a preseason game. Which game is betterm you do the math.

Apparently talking about going to a game of your fav team is lame and lockable. I thought the MODS were fans and would be cool w/ tips on experiencing a play-off game.
Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!

I can't speak for the mod in question, but by just reading the name of the topic you can assume it is kinda of a flame/baiting worthy thread esp when the original poster has been posting threads like this one

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=901589&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=15#p19357108

which everyone would agree should be locked.

I locked that thread at before at 9:30 and the thread is question was locked at 11:30 am.

It isn't unreasonable for the thread to be locked by just looking at the topic name and the poster.

I know I have locked around 10 or so threads in the past few days, and I know my fellow mods have done their fair share as well. I hope that somewhat answers your question.

For the most part the higher ups(Admin) don't like realgm being an portal for personal business matters like ticket exchanges or the sale of tickets. You know we are all hardcore fans for the most part but there are limitations. We can't post streams of the NBA games just because we are suppose to be cool fans.

Blame Rasho, yes, I agree that thread should have been locked. The other one, despite the title, we were having a discussion, with long and hopefully thought out posts. So there really was no reason to lock it.

Can Mods lock a thread without clicking on it? Or do they have to click on it? Just a quick skim through it would have shown there was no need to lock it, despite the title.

Yes we can lock/move/sticky a thread without opening it. It helps us uncluster the boards of various threads.

So that's most likely what happened then, considering the title (and the OP).

Thanks for the info.
