Am I the only person who says out-loud what he's typing?

I read everything aloud that I'm reading/typing ala Jumping Jack Flash w/ Whoopi Goldberg. I even have the same kind of computer.

I'm curious on your meaning of "light on content". Care to expand, defend your opinion, or just insult? I don't take it as an insult, I'm just curious as to why you keep saying his bad, yet you haven't really said why you feel that way. I'm curious as to how you came to this opinion.

I have read two things of Dan Brown, I read a book called Deception Point which was mildly entertaining. I picked it up in a hostel "pick one up, put one down" table and read it during my stay. It was all right as stories go, easy to follow and easy to read. The only problem was that I picked the ending within the first 50 pages and really only finished the book because a). I did not have anything else to read and b). I had invested some time into the reading of it.

I picked up the DaVinci Code when it was the in thing and read about the same 50 pages and while I could not pick the ending, it bored me so much to tears that I had to put it down and find something stimulating to read. This though was more likely a personal reaction to my own hatred for religion that put me off the book.

As for my own opinion about Dan Brown? I just find his books to be full of bland and boring characters who I can not identify with. His narrative technique is simple and easy to read which in itself is not a problem, there have been plenty of fantastic writers who get directly to the point and don't fluff around with literary techniques.

I prefer books that make me think and explore my own values and beliefs. Books such as Lolita by Vladimir Napakov or A handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh are good examples of character based stories that believable and entertaining. If I wish to dip into the unreal I will generally reach for an author like Issac Asimov (if I want to read Science fiction) or David Eddings (If it is fantasy I want). In terms of comedy and satire I generally read alot of Hunter S Thompson, Augustin Borrughs, Kingsly Amis or Chuck Palahniuk.

I applaud Dan Brown for making a very good career (and a boatload of cash to boot). Yet it still does not change the fact that he is a basic and boring writer who managed to find the perfect market (religious skepticism) to sell to the masses.

Thank you. Now I have a few other others/books to add to my list.

Deception Point was ineresting, we'll say. I thought it was easy to read, but eventually you reach a limit to the number of twists and turns you can take. I remember towards the end thinking, "Really? You're going to make another WWE style twist on me?" But I still enjoyed it. Yes it's ending was predictable, although I didn't have too much of a problem with it. Plus I could indetify with the womanizing, alcoholic, rich, widowed, congressman that's running for President. That's like totally my life right now.
