The Polish Hammer, FA target?

Post#1 » by TrentTuckerForever » Sat May 2, 2009 2:08 pm

Now, let me start off by saying that I'm biased on the performance of Marcin Gortat. Being primarily of Polish extraction, I've paid more attention to his career (since he's the league's only Polish player) than it's probably deserved to this point.

But on the court, wouldn't he be a fit with Jefferson, Love and even Pekovic? He's a free agent after the playoffs, and beyond his Game 6 performance in the Sixers/Magic series I think he's a guy who could be a full-time contributor in the league. John Hollinger agrees with me (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/dailydime ... ime-090309):

One of the things we kept discussing was how much Marcin Gortat might fetch as a free agent this summer. Orlando's backup center gets little mention, but has been amazingly productive this season. His 21.0 rebound rate is among the best in the league, plus he's shooting 53.7 percent and has a 17.18 PER... Additionally, he was an active force defensively [in a regular season game against the Celtics], blocking two shots and altering at least three others. Given the sample size, we should take his numbers with a bit of a grain of salt, but he put up good numbers in limited minutes last season, too. I haven't heard anyone talking about him, and the 25-year-old from Poland could help a lot of team's frontcourt needs.

What do you guys think? Draft a PG, sign Gortat?

POLISH POWER!

I love the idea of Marcin Gortat if he can be signed for around 2-3mil/year. He's got great size, and is only 25, so his age fits in. The idea would be to get a top flight guard with our first pick, and hopefully get Mullens at #18, but if he's not available, let's Gortat it up. He still has some work to do on his game, but with minutes, I'll take 11/15 out of my center. :-)

Yeah...I have been following him for most of the season. Whenever he gets decent minutes, he produces and it seems he can block shots at decent rate and is pretty athletic. He doesn't have much of a jump shot, but, depending on what is available via trade, I would be willing to go up to the MLE for him. He reminds me a lot of Pryzbilla. I think 2 to 3Mil would be what he is worth, but as you know, competent big guys can normally ask for more.

I was already on the Gortat wagon. Where have you been. Sign him. Pay him whatever it takes.

That rebound rate is not quite as impressive as Booth's, but yea, I'm a Gortat fan.

As long as he doesn't become the next Jerome James, I'm all for it.

Sign Gortat, get Hinrich, draft a good guard and I'll be happy.

+1. The Vanilla Gorilla is an instigator too, like Varejao or Noah. A distractor, someone who isn't afraid to dirty up a game a bit. Wolves could use a guy like that inside.

Well, it is a huge bandwagon if I didn't see you... that's me up toward the front, waving. I'm wearing a yellow hat.

OT - don't you hate it when people with good seats at a game (front couple of rows) stand up and wave crazily when the action is in front of them? Usually on their cell phone... "Hey look, I'm on TV, creating concrete evidence that I'm an idiot."

That's pretty much my plan.

Hinrich/Telfair
Harden/Foye
Brewer/Gomes(interchangeable)
Love/Smith
Gortat/Mullens(??)

Then wait for Al to come back and we make our push for the playoffs!

Indeed. There is no chance he will come inexpensive. Is he what the Wolves need (eventually) as a third big to compete? Yes. Is he worth the investment right now? Doubtful. I'd rather find a Gorat-type later than Gorat right now.

I don't know about that. There are lot's of players competing for mid level money this year. Perhaps only three of these players will make more than the mid-level - -

Iverson
Mislap
Marion
Williams
Sessions
Felton
Ariza
Childress
Gordon
Rasheed
Dre Miller
David Lee

I imagine Gortat would come after all those players. Maybe others I can't think of off the top of my head. Even assuming 1/3 of thsoe players resign with their respective teams, there's not going to be a lot of teams offering mid level money with 2010 around the corner. A deal like Craig Smith's current deal makes more sense. Assuming Gortat signs with a team that would give him sufficient playing time, he would have a chance to really increase his value at the end of a two year deal.

Gortat is being really underrated on RealGM for some reason. FA centers that good do not get paid just 3 mil a year. It would be an absolute rip to get him for that little.

I'd be willing to spend 4 Mio. $ on Gortat...not more.
