WireTap: Mock Draft 4.0

Post#1 » by basketball royalty » Sat May 2, 2009 1:42 pm

Looks like DeRozan has fallen out of favor for some reason.

1. Kings - Griffen
2. Wiz- Rubio
3. LAC- J Hill
4. OKC- Thabeet
5. MIN- Harden
6. MEM- Holiday
7. GSW- Evans
8. Knicks- Teague
9. Raps- TWill
10. MIL- Jennings
11. Nets- Clark
12. CHA- DeRozan

I'd be thrilled if DD dropped to us but then very pissed if we passed on him. I don't see it happening though.

For a draft i've seen criticized for not having big man depth its strange that when you look at the field the two most likely to have an impact next year are big men in Griffin and Thabeet.
Outside those two i think it's a draft filled with over-valued players, think Ty Lawson.
Whoever lands the number one pick great, otherwise this draft won't do much for anyone's future.
As you can probably tell i'm not huge on Rubio, the guy played has played some good FIBA ball, but it mean's very little, Patrick Mills lit up Team USA in the Olympics and i don't think anyone expects him to be an All-Star.

Chicago Bulls have the 26th pick not OKC Thunder.

Jrue Holiday at #6 to the Grizzlies is an interesting stretch. We know it's very likely there won't be a power forward left at #6 that is deserving of that high a pick. So the question is which player regardless of position would be the best players available?

I've seen Jennings, Harden, Clark, Evans, and now Holiday on various mocks at #6 to Memphis. The debate about who is the best available seems pretty wide open.

To me this just shows that the Grizzlies should use that pick in a trade of some sorts.

I think there are a lot of issues with the wiretap mock draft.

I have to agree that there are a lot of problems. Derozan at 12 is not one of them though, I could easily see him dropping. Darren Collison before Eric Maynor is one of them, and if Curry drops to the Jazz at 20....well, I would be really excited, but it will not happen.

Holiday at #6 is a complete joke. To that point, a lot of the problems with the mock stem from where the PG are and in what order.

What a terrible mock draft for the Kings. Sure, we get Griffin, but no PG? Why do we need Omri Casspi and Wayne Ellington? Ew.

Holiday's trainer is convinced Holiday has top 5 talent. I wouldn't be surprised if he shot up there as the draft got near.

I would say David Thorpe is a little bit more qualified than your mom, so I give his statements a little more weight.

My point is that his trainer is paid to make him look good. Clearly he is saying what is in the best interest of his client.

I raised that exact point in his last ESPN chat and he laughed at me. He doesn't seem to think what he says goes along way with NBA GM's. Out of all the things he's said about his current clients he seems to rave the most about Holiday. All I'm saying is it wouldn't surprise me to see him move up in the draft as actual info begins replacing a fans perspectives, i.e. GM's value a pass first point guard that excels at defense much more than fans do. A lot of teams could use a player like that -- Clippers, Wolves, Golden State, possibly Knicks and Bucks.

Pass first PG? Are we still talking about Jrue Holiday?

Hmm... where to begin ----

7.1 shots in 27 minutes per game

DX strengths: "unselfish" "court vision" "solid passer"

DX weaknesses: "go-to scoring mentality"

His trainer, again David Thorpe:

The top point guards in the draft offer different skills, with several known more for offense. Holiday is seen as a distributor and, despite his occasional struggles at UCLA, a defender.

Thorpe said that NBA executives have told him they consider Holiday to be the best perimeter defender in the draft.

"No one doesn't need a pass-first guard who can play lock-down defense," Thorpe said.

Top 5 talent given a starting job at UCLA tends to have some impact...and Holiday didn't..really showed little progress at all. Not likely a PG just a "combo" who's not enough of a scorer. Ask Crittendon how that goes.

DeRozean was an overhyped SF but at least had a decent finish. He's a reach as a lotto. Much of the freshman class was overhyped. Actually playing good basketball seems to get guys kicked out of the lotto, but there will be "surprises" as some guys who EARNED top 15 will in fact go top 15 while a few posers barely stay rd 1

Holiday will make that Air Jordan kid look like a stiff.

But seriously, I think Holiday will end up being a good NBA player. #6? I don't know about that high, though.

I could see Holiday sneaking up, maybe as high as 7. And to those who say he isn't a pass 1st point guard, I really don't think you watched much of him. I am a b ball junkie and got heavily back into college ball 2 seasons ago and especially this last one. I watched a lot of Big East, Pac 10 and Big 10. I have seen a lot of Holiday. He has left me very disappointed, because he started the year off just flatout amazing and wowing me(not by his stats) and then faded and disapeared, basically regressing instead of improving. After saying all that, it still doesn't change the fact he is a pass 1st point guard and not the so called combo guard he was advertised as. This may have been what limited him, figuring Collison was the team's point guard and therefore he wasn't aloud to have the ball as much as he needed to be effective, but at the same time he started out passive and became way too passive towards the middle of the season, until the end.
He still will likely impress in workouts and a GM that likes to draft more off potential and physical attributes may very well take him over another prospect who is basically all potential, but is diminutive in stature, Brandon Jennings.
