Free agency, who should/could we go after???

Post#1 » by SacKingZZZ » Mon May 4, 2009 2:11 am

I think it's time to start a thread about the upcoming free agency period. There are plenty of guys doing pretty well on teams still in the playoffs and I wouldn't mind seeing the Kings go after a few of them in the hopes to land at least one.

I'd like the Kings to look into acquiring any of Chris Anderson, Paul Millsap, Carlos Boozer, Hedo, Glen Davis, Leon Powe, Brandon Bass, CJ Watson, Jarret Jack, Hakim Warrick (status of QO?), and of course IKE DIOGU!!!! haha. Obviously Boozer would be a huge signing and require a sign and trade but I think there are some solid "under the radar" types to be had. Who do you all want?

I think it's really going to depend on the draft. If wet do get Blake, then Boozer and the rest of the PF's really aren't going to be something of need...we'll need to go more towards the PG route. And obviously, vice versa if we end up with Rubio.

If we end up with neither - I'm just running infront of a bus to ease the pain.

I'm telling ya, I think Tyreke Evans makes this draft a 3 man race. Whether he goes 3rd remains to be seen, but I think this kid has the ability to be the ROY in this draft class, as well as being a perennial all-star caliber player in the NBA down the road as well.

I see this draft as a 3 horse race, much like Horford was the 3rd wheel a couple years back.

i would not be surprised to see us go after hedo. Noc has already complained about being here so a sign and trade would including him would be a possibility. Like said earlier it pretty much all depends on the draft. I expect us to get a pg whether its with the with our early pick or #23. If we don't end up getting griffin then i hope we resign ike.

No Hedo :(

And I'd take Evans, Smills - just...I'd like to trade down to 6th or 7 to get him.

I don't know if he'll be there come draft day. He has the makings of a guy that'll probably sky rocket up the draft board after individual workouts. I think he'll go top 5 when all is said and done, and perhaps top 3 regardless of who's picking.

In all honesty, I would be fine with NOT going after anyone in free agency. There's really nobody out there who would be a real difference maker and the team is already set with supporting role players. We'll have 11 guys under contract after the draft (10 if we don't keep out 2nd rounder). Use the roster vacancies and little cap room we'll have to absorb unbalanced trades. If necessary, sign a couple of undrafted guys or vet-min guys as necessary to fill out the roster. Basically, though, just concentrate this next year on developing the young guys we have (or will have after the draft) and let the roster figure out how to play together under a the new coach. Bank what the team might have under the cap level and carry it forward to 2010. The team is not going to be pushing for a playoff spot for the next year or 2 (or they shouldn't be). Don't waste money on more FAs.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

If we don't end up with Rubio, I'd like to see us go for Raymond Felton

I would rather target Sessions than Felton IMO.

Sessions would be alright too, but he's a little more unpolished in my eyes, and we've already got plenty of youth, Felton isn't that much older anyway.

Even though, I haven't seen Felton for a while but good god his shooting percentages are horrible. Jamal Crawford-like.

1st year- 39.1% FG/35.8% 3s
2nd year- 38.4% FG/33% 3s
3rd year- 41.3% FG/28% 3s
4th year- 40.8% FG/28.5% 3s

He is a sub 40% FG career shooter. I'm not sure what is he doing in offense but seems to me he chucks. Chucks big time.

If anything, I stay away from Felton unless he becomes an efficient PG or whatever.

Felton is trash. I would honestly rather have beno as our starter than signing felton and having two underachieving pg's on our roster.

Personally, as confessed earlier, I would love to see us go after marvin williams IF we can get rid of nocioni. I know that's foreign, and it has maybe a 10% chance of happening, but if we could get marvin though an S&T with atlanta for nocioni and maybe our second rounder and/or Greene, I would do that in a heartbeat. Once again, let me show the ideal situation:

We get first pick, we trade to whoever is second for more picks or whatever we can get.
We take Rubio.
We take Blair with 23.
We do an S&T with atlanta sending them nocioni, Greene, 2nd rounder for Williams.
We resign diagu for a couple bucks.
I also liked the suggestion of birdman just as an energizer off the bench.

Lineup:
Rubio/Beno
Martin/Garcia
Williams/Garcia
Thompson/Blair/Anderson
Hawes/Diagu/Anderson

Unlikely, but ideal imo.

Of course it is, but I'm assuming the worst. :( If we don't get Griffin I'd really like to get in on the race for Boozer. If that fails try to bring back Ike. Another FA I'd like us to at least invite to summer league would be Richard Hendrix, I've been a fan for awhile and think all he needs is the chance, he'll be the steal of last years draft once given the chance to play.

not too high on marvin williams, even though i havent really seen him showcase his talent on the court while watching some of ATL's games, i dont see him as a difference maker, nocioni makes a more impact then he does, although williams is younger. giving up too much for marvin williams. with this lineup, i really dont see the kings going anywhere, another dreadful season. rubio is always a plus if we get a top 2 pick in the draft, i dont see the wizards grabbing rubio if they had the first.

I’m fairly certain our goal isn't to improve for next season, it's to shed two bad contracts before the start of 2009-10 while maintaining our core players and make them the future leaders of our team.

All this talk regarding Hedo and Marvin would have to be predicated on us moving Andres contract; a task not easily attainable in my humble opinion. There is simply no way we can have both Noc and Hedo/Williams considering their contract demands.

btw Smills, also a big fan of T. Evans. The kid is just scratching the surface and he would come into a situation where he could really excel with guys like Kevin (who is more effective off the ball), Jason and Spencer. He is certainly the guy I would target with the 3rd or 4th pick.
Interesting, you have some ideas you would like to bounce off Brian Sabean? That's strange, I have some objects I would like to bounce off Brian Sabean.

ok so it doesn't matter who we end up in the draft as of right now, whoever we get will deffinitely change the rest of the offseason plan. First of all, we don't even know what pick we will get, and second, who knows how these cheap ass maloofs will spend in FA. With that said, here is some names I would like to make a run at assuming we get a top 2 pick and we end up with Griffin or Rubio...

Trevor Ariza - either Griffin or Rubio, we really need a player like Ariza on this team
Marvin Williams - either, would probably make the best competion of a contender we could have
Brandon Bass - if we draft Rubio - ONLY if we are solidified at PG, not too high on him tho
Bobby Brown - either, he was getting to shine in Sacramento, not so much in Minny...
Andre Miller - IF we get Griffin - "Mr. Ironman" - we could use his toughness
Boozer/Millsap - IF we get Rubio, either one would work if we don't get Griffin

who I would like to get rid of in the offseason:

Bobby Jackson - love this man more than any King since Webber left, got his jersey, but have some respect for him and let him go and sign with LeBron and Co. to compete for a title

Simmons, Thomas - do I need an explanation??
Beno - any way we could i'd do it....
