Sign Ben Gordon please!!!

Post#1 » by gurpilo » Sun May 3, 2009 1:51 pm

After this playoffs it´s clear we need to sign another player to complement Joe Johnson.

Joe has been a big disapointment this series. He is averaging 15ppg, 3 apg and 4 rpg, with .391FG%, 0,267 3P% and 0,636FT%, this is ridicolous for a star player.

Ben Gordon has had a big season this year, on the playoffs he has averaged 24,3ppg, 3apg, 3rpg. with 0,388FG%, 0,370 3p%, 0,875ft%.

Ben will be demanding 7M$ a year, while Joe could demand 12-15M$ on 2010. We can play both next year and then decide if we sign Joe or go for other big name on 2010. For me it´s not a big difference on the court and Ben could provide nearly the same value at half the price. We could use the money Bibby is leaving to sign him.

For the PG we have some cheap options via Draft, FA: Jack, CJ Watson, Mike James, Anthony Carter, Marcus Williams, Bobby Jackson... and we have Acie Law. I really don´t know if the ohter "good" alternatives could provide such a big difference: Bibby or Felton.

I see the Bulls offering the 6 years/$54 million that Ben turned down last season. He may accept that one this time.

Key factor: Ben has been invited to join Deng in playing for great Britain. (Ben was born in London). If Ben wants to play, he'll need to get his contract wrapped up by beginning of August

Perhaps I am just overeacting to the poor performances and I don´t think Ben is better player but I was just wondering if his value is really 8 M$ more than Ben Gordon. 6M$ for a 20 ppg SG is good value, 15 M$ for a 21 ppg SG that is not capable to be a leader on the floor is not good value. Remember that with that money there are a lot of free agents available on 2010:

Lebron, Wade, Amare, Bosh, Rondo, L. Aldridge, B. Roy, Pierce,Nowitzki, McGrady, Ford, Gay, R. Jefferson, M. Redd, Ginobili, L Hughes, C Duhon, R. Alston.

With 15 M$ we could go after a big name: Amare or Bosh or sign other good players: Jefferson, Ford, Duhon, Hughes...

NO thanks... Gordon drives me crazy! He is not a distributor, he shoots too many wild shots... He hits a lot of them, but still. Joe may average a similar amount of points, but he brings MUCH more to the table. He guards the opponents best player, he rebounds 5-6 a game, and doles out 5-6 assists. Even scoring 24 ppg in the playoffs Gordon has shot 38%, with 3 assists and 3 rebounds.

Slight problem - the Hawks have no cap space...

Good to see that Joe shut me up!!! Finally he appeared and became the leader we need. He has to keep this line against the Cavs. I would be more than happy if we at least can compete in all games even if we lose the series. Forcing the 7th game would be a success.

Gordon is a good player. But he's going to get overpaid big time by someone this summer.

Might as well be the hawks since they jusat overpaid for Bibby. Hinrick is making 10m, a solid offer would put pressure on Chicago to let him go or force a trade.

Offensively he would take the Hawks a step up the ladder by giving Joe and decisive dangerous option when Joe is doubled.

With Gordon the beat the Heat in 5 or 6.

with marvin Williams the hawks would of beat the heat in 5 or 6. Mo Evans is a pretty big step down.

I dont think Gordon would of helped much more than bibby did. He shot over 50 pct this series

Larry? seriously? I'm a HUGE Larry Hughes fan but even I'm not looking forward to the day he gets out of his contract.

The biggest "other decision" is Gordon's future. The fifth-year guard said he had "no reason to" switch agents from Raymond Brothers, who has had somewhat acrimonious negotiations with the Bulls over consecutive summers. Gordon said starting doesn't matter as much as winning, money and respect. "That's what negotiations are about, how much a player is going to be paid or how much a team is willing to pay a player," Gordon said. "I know what kind of player I am and what kind of impact I can have. I just want to be somewhere where the organization is trying to win a championship. "We're not kids in the playground arguing over basketball. This is a business and they need to sit down and figure something out. If there's nothing to be figured out, move on and do something else."

Bibby is an expiring contract this year. We need to spend our $$$ wisely this summer and I don't want to blow it all on Gordon (who would be a terrible fit alongside Joe in the backcourt).

A terrible fit? How so.
Ben is an explosive player and excellent long ball shooter who would make the double teams on Joe cease. on the Hawks he would NOT have to guard 2s any more and what's more important he would be guarded by 1s who he would eat up like pancakes on sunday morning
It would also be less effective to double him with Joe and Josh on the court than with Chicago.

If you want to spend the money you get from Bibby's expiring contract, you also have to renounce to Zaza rights and all the exceptions, so basically, you only get Gordon and can only use minimum contracts after that.

We won't be better by this way. We need to keep our F.A. or sign-&-trade them, but certainly not leaving them expire. It can be a way to improve, but only if you can get enough cap room to sign a star player, then add other with MLE the following years. But Gordon is not a star, and it would be a big mistake to loose all other possibility and players only for getting Gordon.
