Rocketworld,
It doesn't matter if McGrady wanted to. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement prevents either players or teams altering contracts.

just checked the salaries for portlands roster, and wow at roy and aldridge. i know theyre still in their rookie contracts, but they are producing way more than the 3 and 4 mil theyre getting, especially roy. i mean we have a 21 mil player producing **** all this season.

Moofs,
Shaq-and Duncan and Garnett-took less money on a contract extension. He(they) didn't take less on existing contract,he(they) took less than what they could on future yrs.
For example,T-Mac and Rockets could agree to a contract extension for another 5 yrs at $15mil/yr.(Not going to happen, strictly an example.) It wouldn't have any effect on his salary next season, just future yrs.

Rocketworld,
No loopholes. If McGrady announced he was retiring and giving up his contract-and the Rockets agreed-and then 6 months later announced he was coming back,he'd come back at his old contract.
the Players Assoc wanted guaranteed contracts to be guaranteed, and the League office doesn't want teams getting around salary caps.
The one sorta loophole there is would be the Rockets traded McGrady,he was bought out by his new team and then waived, and then after 30 days the Rockets could sign him as a FA-as could everybody else.
There are some obvious problems w/that scenario. The only reason for the other team to do so would be for them to unload a really bad contract. McGrady would have to agree to accepting a buyout w/a massive discount, which is problematic as he's be giving up money, knowing he prob won't see another big payday. And unless it's a trade w/Dallas,the Rockets don't save that much money,at best only 25% of McGrady's salary minus the min to resign him, perhaps some $4mil in all. And this assumes the Commissioner doesn't step in.
(Stackhouse' contract in Dallas has only $2mil guaranteed if he's waived by Aug 1.)
