What is Rashard Lewis's value?

Post#1 » by Buzzer Beater » Wed May 6, 2009 8:48 pm

We all know about his dreadful contract, but he's still definitely a very good player. With that in mind, how would Orlando view him in a trade? Who/what would they want in return?

I can't imagine why Orlando would trade him. He fits what they want to do perfectly.

But I think I remember reading a few months ago that the Magic were in terrible shape financially, and his contract is absurd. Surely that alone makes him SOMEWHAT available, but I'm not sure how much it would take to get him. As a Heat fan, I think he'd be a great fit at SF if we also acquired Bosh or another top player in the same deal.

His value is definitely negative. He's a good player, but players with similar talent can be found for half the money. Hell, Turkaglu is a free agent who will probably cost in the $6-9M range. Is Rashard any better than Turkaglu?

The only team that wants to pay him that contract, already has him. Any offers they get would (understandably) be overpaid sludge, and they have no incentive to do that.

He's a very good player but he has an horrible contract. Just terrible.

He is also very important to the Orlando Magic so i'd say they keep him at least a couple more years.

You used "Rashard Lewis" and "value" in the same sentence.

I don't think that the Magic would take an expiring contract for Lewis so I can't put his contract among the worst in the league. I sure can't say that I would accept an expiring for Lewis if I were the GM. I think to call someone a terrible contract then their team would have to want out of the deal and I just don't think thats the case in Orlando. They had to overpay Lewis to get him and they got the player they wanted. Its not like he has underperformed since getting there

Possibly the worst contract in the NBA.

So I see that a lot of people are saying that teams won't give up much for him...but what I really want to know is what it would take for Orlando to give him up. I'm trying to figure out a 3 team deal where Miami gets Bosh and Lewis. While Lewis's contract certainly hurts, with a 2-4 of Wade-Lewis-Bosh, we would only need to add solid role players to field a championship team.

Outside teams view him as a terribly overpaid role player, Orlando sees him as an integral part to their success on a team that won't have cap space in the foreseeable future anyway. I can't see anyone making an offer Orlando would accept.

That being said, I would offer Maggette and Crawford for him.

I feel like he's pretty untradeable right now... I mean you just don't pay a one-way third option around $20 mil a year... You just don't dawg...

The proposal from Gswhoops basically matches up financially (Maggette and Crawford more or less make the same as Lewis does over the life of his contract), but even in that case the Warriors would probably be better unloading those bad contracts individually...

Orlando is OK with his contract- you would have to send them back something that makes them better. And really considering how few PF's have range I think you are barking up the wrong tree. If you want a PF with range for miami I'd look at Troy Murphy.

As others have said, he's basically an untradeable player at this point. He's paid FAR to much for Orlando to get anything worthwhile for him, so they're better off just keeping him and not even entertain offers.

Very solid player with perhaps the worst contract which brings down his value.
Orlando is going to rue the day they signed Lewis if the next CBA mandates teams
follow a hard salary cap for you can't afford to pay a guy like Lewis $23.79 Million
in 2012.

Replace "reason" with "chance".

Here's a reason: Orlando is hemmoraging money, and Rashard Lewis has one of the richest contracts in the league, and has a PER around 15.

Once again- this wasn't a threat started by a Magic fan trying to move him. This was a fan of another team wanting to acquire him. I do not believe the Magic would accept expring contracts for Lewis- he gives them what they need at PF. Trying to call Lewis a bad contract is sort of pointless because Orlando wouldn't wipe the contract off of their books if given the chance.
