OT: Manny Ramirez Tested Positive, Suspended 50 Games

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.

The test result and suspension is expected to be announced later today.

shocking? goes to show how far major leagues has come..

and I really liked Manny..

Looks like Manny forgot to take the pills that covered up his injections.

Who cares, really. 3/4 of the sluggers in the past decade have or have had performance enhancing drugs in their systems, so what's the difference: they're now all on an even playing field regardless.

The difference between Manny and any other major leaguer is that he got caught. These suspensions are just useless. They'll continue to come out with drugs that can't be detected.

I'm kind of leaning towards the medication thing at the moment because I don't think anyone with half a brain (including Manny) would knowingly take PEDs at this point in time because of all the attention surrounding the issue. A slugger like Manny would get extra attention because of his power numbers, so it just seems crazy for a person in his position to take the PEDs.

If he did do it knowingly then I don't know what to say.

Sucks for the Dodgers but they should still be okay in that division. But this isn't good for the MLB's rep.

The term "Performance Enhancing Drug" is a little bit of a misnomer. This is especially true for the list put forward by the IOC. I mean, I can hardly see how marijuana can be considered a PED, but Ross Ribliati (sp?) got stripped of his gold medal (eventually reinstated as I remember) for having a minute amount in his blood (if I remember correctly, the amount was small enough that it couldn't have come from inhaling it directly). I'm not saying THC should be legal, I don't mind it being banned as long as there is a consensus. But many times, the specifics of a violation are never made public, so it's difficult to make a personal judgemement as to the guilt or innocence of the offender. Personally, if Manny got busted for marijuana, it wouldn't bother me, but if he got busted for some sort of anabolic steroid, then I may begin to question his numbers and such. According to Manny's people the issue was over a cold medication perscribed by his doctor.

A few question?
1. What exactly are Manny's options vis-a-vis an appeal?

2. Does this put the Dodgers streak in jeopardy?

Seems to me like suspending Manny does make a difference.

The Dodgers have lost their starting LF and best hitter for the next 50 games.
The NL West race just got re-jigged.
Mannywood marketing concept is now Driftwood - Dodgers financials are affected.
About a 1/4 of the Dodger budget just got yanked from their lineup.
Manny is disgraced personally. His life will change.
Teams like the Dodgers should do more due diligence before paying anyone 45mil.
A precedent like this can drive the market value down for all elite players - the Union is not amused

Crooks keep coming up with new schemes all the time. Should the cops just give up?
