Perkins outplayed Howard in Game 2

Post#1 » by return2glory » Thu May 7, 2009 7:22 pm

I want to give Perkins his props. He outplayed Howard in game 2 and I don't want to let that go unnoticed. Knock on wood, but Perkins has stepped up his game in the playoffs. I'm really proud of Perkins, Rondo, and BBD and the good they've been doing in the playoffs.

Perk outplayed Howard, Rondo outplayed Alston, Ray outplayed Reddick, BBD matched Lewis..and our bench outplayed their bench...PERFECT!I'm sure if Paul gets minutes he would have outplayed Turk too...

Way to go Perk..you mean ass ****...

If Perk is guarding Howard, I have no problems when the Magic post Howard. Everytime he went one on one with Perk, he was forced into one of those baby hooks across the lane. He is not going to consistently hit those. If Perk can ration his fouls like he did last night, than I think he can really contain Howard throughout this series. Howard will get some put backs and dunks, but Perk can hang with him in the post.

Perk just plays him so perfectly -- it's all about the work he does before Howard catches the ball. He just never let's him get comfortable. Beautiful to watch.

Perk didn't do a bad job the first game either, just that Howard was able to get more put backs. Its a shame he doesn't get as much recognition as a defensive gem exempli gratia, the low number of votes for even second team defensively . I posted a question on the game thread but it got lost when Rondo dunked on Howard and Lewis, which was how is Howard considered such a great defensive player? Is it just cause he blocks (alters) shots, mostly from the weak side? I know the point of defense is to keep the opponents from scoring which Howard does do when he actually get a block but to me great defensive players are guys like KG, Duncan (in prime), and Artest. Guys who can literally shut players down. Its like when AI is talked about being a defensive player just because he gambles on the passing lanes. What do you guys think?

Not trying to bash Howard who is an elite player in the league, but what do you guys think??? I know Russell was also a shot blocker aswell but his numbers were otherworldly! Also from tape I have seen Russell also rebounded his own blocks not just swat it away, which would negate the position for the offensive team.

I think it's mainly about the blocks, but look at the Magic's normal starting lineup: Jameer Nelson, Courtney Lee, Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis. Have any of them ever been considered more than an average defender? Lee is the only one that is known as a above average defender, but he was a rookie and got a bunch of rookie calls. Somehow though the Magic were a top 3-5 defensive team the entire season. That is because of Dwight Howard. When he doesn't block shots he changes a ton of shots. The problem with the Magic's defense is the weakside help when Dwight goes to block the shot the opposing team gets a lot of the rebounds and easy baskets off of Dwight going to block the shot.

Perk absolutely neutralized Howard in game 2. He was also about as loose on the offensive end as I've ever seen him. I've been watching Perk's moves for a long time, but a couple of the moves he employed last night usually aren't in his repertoire.

No offense to Rondo, but if any Celtic other than Garnett deserved to be recognized by the league for inclusion on the all-NBA defensive teams, it was Perk. Remember the game in Houston when he put the kibosh on Yao? Perk's reputation is beginning to grow, but I think he's still vastly underrated by most fans and media.

Perk matches up one on one really well with Howard. Haven't we been noticing this for years now? I can remember as far back as in 2006-2007, thinking how Big Al outplayed Howard, more due to Perk's defensive impact on him. That said, Howard provides a lot more to his team in help D. Perk doesn't scare perimeter players from attacking the rim the way Dwight does, but he's no slouch, that's just a testament to how great Howard's become.

I remember Perkins being one of the few players in the NBA who could consistently slow down Shaq when he was on the Heat.

Perk is a terrific defender. He plays Howard very well 1 on 1. I thought he played Howard well in game 1 too.

When they had KG here to come over and double, the Magic had major troubles. Perk has problems with Perimeter shoots like Brad Miller.

Perkins is Mr.Miyagi and Howard is the Karate Kid. Perkins can take Howard out of his game on a good night and contain him on a average night.

Howard is expected to be better than any big we have seeing as how he is a former #1 pick and is the main guy on the team while Perk is a 27th who gets limited touches on the offensive end and Big Baby and Powe were second rounders, yet he sure hasn't played that much better than our guys especially Perk!

Howard: 14pts 17 rbds 3 blocks
Perk: 11 pts 12.5rbds 5 blocks

It's only 2 games, but if the refs let them play, Perkules can hold his own against Superman!

Here's a great article on Perk!

and Kobe guy! Bynum and Gasol and their finesse game wouldn't fare well at all VS Howard!

I love Perkins' game. He's exactly the kind of guy I want on the Spurs next to Duncan, I've found him to be a very underrated player the past 2 years. He's definitely one of the better role players in the NBA, and he doesn't back down.

Dude needs to let out a smile once in a while though.

I'd take Garnett over Howard.

EDIT: As in, for the next year or two.

Perkins' strength is really underrated. I'd say he's arguably stronger overall than Howard, especially when you factor in the waist down where his calves are almost twice the size of Dwight's. The guy's built like a brick wall. Howard on the other hand is built like an upside-down triangle. He's obivously not as agile or quick as Howard but the fact that he holds his own is a testament to his strength and skill.

Well hey then i would assume you wouldnt trade Perkins for Howard straight up then, right? I mean Perkins is better right so you would obviously keep Perk, right???

My 2 cents is worth 5 cents.
