Good news about Big Baby / MLE

Post#1 » by chakdaddy » Fri May 8, 2009 3:31 am

Someone posted over on the CBA board about something I had been worried about.

First off, we already knew the loophole is closed thet let the Warriors lose Arenas - a restricted FA can only be offered up to the MLE so the team will always get a chance to match it, even if they're over the cap.

But, I was scared that matching it would use up the MLE. It turns out that matching a contract at the level of the MLE would use the Early Bird exception rather than our own MLE, leaving the MLE available to use elsewhere.

Yup.

I was hoping the good news would be we could add restrictions in Davis' contract on how much Baby can spend on food.

I thought Big Baby was unrestricted since he only signed a two year contract? This is why Ainge has pushed most second rounders to sign three year deals -- it's the third year that gives the Celtics the right to match an offer.

Still, resigning Big Baby won't affect the MLE, I just don't think the Celtics have the ability to match an offer (in essence, let the market set a price).

Big Baby is a must keep - absolutely. If he adds more muslce and sheds some fat off-season it will improve his overall game. Boozer 2.0 ? anyone.

Neither Baby or Powe are unrestricted FA's, per the FAQ

Restricted free agency exists only on a limited basis. It is allowed following the fourth year of rookie "scale" contracts for first round draft picks (see question number 41). It is also allowed for all veteran free agents who have been in the league three or fewer seasons. However, a first round draft pick becomes an unrestricted free agent following his second or third season if his team does not exercise its option to extend the player's rookie scale contract for the next season. All other free agency is limited to unrestricted free agency.

Rondo/Marbs/Gabe
Allen/House/Maybe Tony again
Pierce/Walker/
KG/Baby/Scal
Perk/Sheed/

and Powe back at some point.

I would NEVER pay $8 mill to Sheed so that line-up isn't happening unfortunately.

Nobody else is going to pay 8 mil to Sheed either, unless he has naked photos of Joe with Isiah.

I think Dyess is the guy we need but I am just sick of waiting on that dude.

As far as the 3 year contracts, they were more relevant before the Arenas Rule, now they are simply away to get one more cheap year out of a player in exchange for some upfront money. Leon is a perfect example, if Boston had to sign Leon last season after the championship he likely would have gotten 3-4 mil per on a 4 year deal, not a bad contract but with the knee issues a risk. Hopefully the weight issues will be a drag on Baby a little bit but because of the package he brings and the cost certainty he is going to garner a lot of interest.

Does this mean BBD has some sign and trade value to us? That would be my idea of good news..

I'd first go after one of Detriot's bigs (Sheed or Dice) and if we acquire them, I'd rather deal BBD then sign him for an absurd amount of money. Ya he's been coming up big, but he's also the only guy playing. Scalbrine also looks good now for pete sake. Davis is defintley nice to have around, but I think we're all starting to get the feeling that his Market Value has climbed a way bit higher than his book value.

^No one is saying overpay Baby. If we can get him on a reasonable deal, he is a must keep.

I like McDyess or ZaZa for this team better than Sheed. Sheed doesnt' come to play all the time.

I expect KG will chat with Sheed about his salary demands - they're friends, so if anyone can get Sheed to fallin in its KG.

I expect Ainge would really like to get Dyess, as he has tried twice before. Dyess is younger than Sheed and was far more productive in the playoffs, so he may be the target - however, KG and him do not share a warm relationship, as KG does with Sheed.

Either way, I am positive that Ainge will go hard after one of the two and is sure to snag a headliner veteran F/C this off-season.

I'm leaning toward Dyess myself, because he really brought his game to a higher level this year after he returned to Detroit, showing he's still got some vintage "Dice" in his game.

I don't understand this line of thinking with regard to Sheed. Do you really think KG and the rest of our veteran club is going to let Sheed play half ass? If we get Sheed, he'll be busting his ass night in and night out (See: Marbury, Stephon).

The other thing with BBD is he might want a starting job, worthy or not. It might be hard to keep in Boston regardless of the asking price.

You simply don't sign Davis for more than $3.0 - 3.5 million per season, 3 years...

I agree that Dyess should be a prime target but obviously Sheed wouldn't be a bad fall back plan. :D

The Celtics need a big man who can consistently match up with other #3 frontline guys.

Davis would be perfect as a #4, with Scals as your #5 you have plenty of "floor spacing" bigs who can also defend on the roster.
