OT: "Beat Boston" t-shirt... How lame and exploitive to fans

Post#1 » by campybatman » Fri May 8, 2009 6:59 pm

I'm not as much offended being a Boston fan as much as I find this amusing. Why do teams do this? Really, it's lame and exploitive in that you're making money off these fans' emotions. A quick buck. It's downright lame, childish and gay (stupid).

Does anyone recall if Boston ever did this in the past? I wouldn't be surprised if it has never occurred... Boston isn't lame or would stoop to that level. Yay, look at me! I'm on television wearing this lame t-shirt and I look like a damn (Please Use More Appropriate Word).

This looks so generic looking. It reeks of a quick buck. They could at least hand them out for free. No, a real promotion would be to give out a free slice of pizza if fans sellout the arena and the Magic win the game. That's right, to all fans a free pizza slice. That makes more sense... Because if they lose. Then you would've spent $20 for a bland t-shirt that you might as well write on its back with a Sharpie: "I attended an Orlando Magic game that wasn't cheap and my team lost, and this stupid t-shirt is all I've to show for it."

"Beat Swamp Land" and "Beat Disney World" just don't have the same ring I must admit.

Is this a sarcastic/ironic thread...?

Beat LA T-shirts have been around since the the early 80's. Nothing wrong with Orlando copying us. It's adorable...

It's interesting, guys make bank, by just making the easiest of shirts. All one color, maybe a logo, and a simple phrase. Stand outside the garden, sell them for 10 dollars. Lots of people buy them.

It's their take on our famous BEAT LA t-shirts. It's clever if they intend it as a parody.

Got my tickets for Sunday - hope I get one, I can but it with my Atlanta Hawks playoff fever shirt from last year.

I forgot about the "Beat L.A." t-shirt, but, as said, Boston and Los Angeles have a longstanding rivalry. It's considered "OK" for these storied franchises to go back-and-forth with stuff like this. It's like an inside joke shared only between them. But, come on Orlando. Shame on you. Charging your fans... If I were a Magic fan I would be asking whether or not I'm getting some shorts with that. I'm not generally cheap, but if you're going to sell me generic crap. Well, make me want to buy it. That's what you do when you're selling crap. You sell people on the suggestion that more is better. You give them a t-shirt, cap and shorts. Altogether it isn't worth a pair of Converse sneakers. But, hey... It's fun to live in the illusion.

I think the government should tell teams what they can and can't sell and at what price. How storied the rivalry is should be taken into consideration. As well as the aesthetic of the color scheme. Clearly fans can't be trusted to decide what they want to buy.

Hey, if you've an issue with me, go back to your own board. It's as simple as that. Don't get mad at me because your basketball franchise is charging you for a generic t-shirt. If you want to buy that crap, be my guess. But, don't come on this board and run your mouth like you're welcome here. You aren't... What have you contributed to this thread other than to contradict what the topic is? Exactly. Get lost... You troll. I mean do you even know what a rivalry means? Oh, you wouldn't know anything about that because the Magic and Celtics don't have a rivalry despite your biggest hope. Do you see Houston printing out lame t-shirts to their fans saying to beat the Lakers? No. Get a clue Orlando... Learn what it means to respect your opponent.

Come on now, sports have long since been whored out and smushed in with the entertainment industry, the push really started in the early 90's and has just kept going. It's really nothing more than a cash cow these days, a far cry from the purity it once represented. Now before I sound like I'm getting all nostalgic about the old days, I don't mind it. I reconciled myself with the way things are a long time ago and accepted it, otherwise I wouldn't even follow professional sports anymore.

So with that said, I see no problem with the Magic doing this to help find another avenue to turn a buck. People will buy them and generate revenue, and that's all that really matters to the suits who pull the strings.

And with that said, any T-shirt that says "Beat Boston" and ISN'T fashioned in Purple, Gold, or Yankee Pinstripe is MEGA lame, and so is anyone who would wear it  have some self respect, don't be such sheepish followers
