DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
I havent posted here in awhile. I just like posting about the draft, trades, and the offseason. I can talk about the games with my friends, family and knowledge NBA people. I think its going to be tough for us to ge by Orlando but I think we will push them to atleast 6 or 7 games. If we had Leon Powe I would feel alot better about this series. I said before the series we would lose in 6 games to Orlando. I feel we need to become bigger, longer and more athletic. We still need a backup 3. I still feel we haven't adequately replaced PJ Brown and Posey. I have a few ideas how we can replace these guys. I would give our offeason grade last year an F. We signed O'Bryant and resigned House and TA with the MLE. House is the only signing that has worked out. Marbury was a decent signing midseason but he has only had a few good games and Mikki Moore is awful. I would personally rather have Mickey Mouse at backup center then Mikki Moore. We need to maximize next season and 2011 because I believe that after that season we will become a midlevel playoff/lottery team again with Pierce and KG in 2012 at 34 and 35 yrs old. I don't care at all about the luxury tax and neither should the owners. We have a 2 year window left IMO. The following is my offseason plan to maximize the next 2 years:
1. TRADE TA, Scal, Giddens plus 1.5 mil trade exception to GS for 1. Stephen Jackson or 2. Corey Maggette or 3. Jamal Crawford:
GS would be more then willing to take expiring contracts for one of these 3 guys. Nelson wants all 3 of them gone. None of them are happy there and GS is rebuilding. I have heard of all of them in trade rumors.
Boston needs to get a long defender/scorer on the 2nd unit. Stephen Jackson is 31 yrs old next season and the guy must want to play for a winner at that age. He has already adpated to playing with SA before in 03 when he won a title. He is an excellent defender a 6-8 with long arms, good lateral quickness, and a good vertical. AT 6-8 he can alter many shots and he gives us another guy to throw at Rashard Lewis, Lebron James, Joe Johnson, Dwayne Wade, and Kobe Bryant. Jackson is the tough minded, playoff vet this team needs. Jackson has shown he can hit big shots like Posey and hes even better at posting up and driving then Posey was. This guy can score 20 PPG like he did this past yr. Jackson has 4 yrs left on his contract but once again I dont care. We will never have cap space anyways once Rondo gets a 10-12 mil dollar per yr extension and we only have a 2 yr window left! Jackson has 4 yrs left on his deal but talent wise I would take the risk because its worth the reward of one title. WE NEED STEPHEN JACKSON!!!!
If GS doesnt wanna deal Jackson I would go after Maggette next. He is an excellent scorer with an elite level body, athleticism, jumping ability. He can score at will and is an excllent driver. He is an up and down shooter and is a knucklehead at times but KG and the vets wouldnt let that **** fly here. He has the physical attributes to be a good defender. He is overpaid as well with 4 yrs left on his deal but who cares as long a we can have a better shot at banner 18!
Jamal Crawford is a guy I would consider in a trade as well. With only 2 yrs left on his deal I would be willing to take the risk if the other guys arent available. Crawford could atleast provide scoring for the second unit. He would be a short term risk and not somebody I would exacly love on this team. This guy plays **** D, dribbles too much and has bad shot selection. I feel being surrounded by vets thoughthis guy maybe become a muhc better player. He provides size in the backcourt at worse. I would however rather make a move for Posey or Nocioni instead of this guy!
2. Resign Powe and Baby to 3 to 4 mil per yr for 3 yrs. These guys are both good backups and they know our system. They are hardnosed players who play defense, rebound, take charges and they do whatever it takes to win. Powe is better at getting to the line and Baby is better at shooting. They both do some things the other guy cant. I would let them backup our bigs for another year. I think they can take it at our foes like Varejao/Wallace and Odom. By the way how bad does Bynum look in the playoffs?
3. I would love to take a flyer on Zaza, Rasheed, or Chris Anderson with the MLE. I think the odds of this are low but its worth exploring. I don't think one of these guys is a necessity but a luxury. I doubt any of them will sign with us however but its worth a try.
4. Resign Marbury. I think he will be a lot better next yr. He already creates more pts then our former backup PG Cassell. Marbury is still an excellent penetrator and passer. Let him get his game back this offseason and I bet he scores/shoots better next yr. There isnt anybody better we can get in FA at backup pg.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
Calming down here:
1) Assuming Davis is re-signed, the Cs have four returning big men who can play -- KG/Perk/Davis/Scal. In an ideal world, Powe doesn't successfully demand a contract until his rehab is proven, allowing the Cs to use his roster spot to take a flyer on somebody else.
While KG and Davis sort of combine to be a backup center, a true backup C is also needed. That could use up the MLE right there. Even then, full-MLE centers almost never work out. Birdman seems to be the only decent candidate for same in 2009.
2) Eddie is a nice backup 2. Against some teams, he can be a de facto backup 3, in that Ray can slide over to the 3 while Eddie plays the 2. Against a few teams -- namely ones whose PGs have no quickness -- Eddie can steal a few minutes as backup 1. But basically I like him at backup 2. What's more, he can probably be kept w/o again denting the MLE.
3) Marbury is the best backup PG we can hope to get w/o denting the MLE.
4) In an optimistic world, Walker evolves into a solid backup 3 who can play a little 2 and/or 4. That seems plausible even if far from certain.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
Here's how I would like for the roster to look after the off-season.
Garnett, Powe (resigned) and Scalabrine
Pierce, Outlaw (via trade) and Walker
Perkins and Andersen (signed)
Rondo
R. Allen and A. Parker (signed)
Subtractions
House (opt out)
T. Allen (trade)
Pruitt (trade)
Giddens (trade)
Moore (free agent)
Marbury (free agent)
Davis (free agent)
Split the MLE between Andersen and A. Parker. Trade this year's second round pick with T. Allen or Giddens to Portland for Outlaw. I don't know if Portland goes for that and they're set at shooting guard. And I'm unsure of what to do for a back-up point guard for Boston. There really aren't any options in free agency. Andre Miller will want a starting gig. Ainge might want to keep the second round pick, then.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
My possible to happen dream scenario is:
Scal and TA for Posey.
Re-sign Marbury and Baby. Do the right thing and give Powe a vet min contract.
Use MLE on Birdman or Parker or Rasho.
But we had an absolutely horrible off-season and a pathetic vet signing in Moore over Mutombo or waiting for Joe Smith so I'm not counting on Ainge to put supporting vets around this team.
BTW House will be here next year on a player option. He won't dip into the MLE nor will he have any suitors to do anything but exercise his player option.
I doubt we keep Starbury but he at one time was good for an offensive punch. I still don't like his game at all... so him leaving won't upset me that much.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
If the Knigs land Blake Griffin they might want to unload Jason Thompson since they're both power forwards. So would the Knigs do this deal for cap relief?
To Boston Thompson, Nocioni, Kenny Thomas & #23
To Sac-Town Ray Allen & Walker
I know I know another Ray Allen trade but he will be 34 next season and I just think Ainge wont resist trading Ray's xpiring for some young blood to go with Rondo, Perk & company. Maybe Ray re-joining us after a buyout or simply just re-signs with us in 2010.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
My dream offseason, to put it mildly, does not include trading Ray Allen for a vastly inferior player, and throwing in Bill Walker for the privilege of doing so.
As for Marbury -- I think he can get his shot back, at least partially. And if he does, he'll be a nice backup to have.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
Scal/Tony/Giddens/Pruitt can bring back $9 1/2 million or so in salary, if I did the numbers correctly.
So perhaps my dream offseason includes a salary-dump acquisition of Hinrich.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
Hinrich would be an amazing pickup.
He's like a better version of Delonte West.
I also like the way he regained his form from his injury this year as well coming in shooting 45% and 40 from 3 [I'm approximating]. Not to mention he can cover any PG/SG/SF outside of brute strength SFs. And he has a PG's mind.
All that said, he's signed for CHI long term. And I think they'll be willing to let Gordon go and insert him in the starting lineup at the 2 spot. They have enough money committed between Hinrich and Deng and they have to worry about re-signing Rose to the max in 3-4 years.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
step 1: See who we can resign on the cheap. We need to get Powe back or agree to sign him mideseason. If Baby doesn't get a great offer somewhere else we need him back too. We need to convince Starbury that he still has a lot to prove and needs to stay in Boston.
step 2: Evaluate the youth. I would assume that Walker and Giddions get a bit more run next season. For the first few months at least we can probably afford to give them 15+ a game. What about Gabe? I think he is done based on a comment Ainge made after he got in trouble. He said something like sometimes it takes one mistake to lose your spot. A decision also needs to be made on Tony Allen. Personally, my hunch is that he is not a real winner.
step 3: Look to the draft. Is anyone going to sell us another Rondo? With at lease some of our youth moving into the back of the bench/rotation we need to reload. We should always be taking advantage of the D League. I think we look to pick up 2 new guys with potential.
step 4: Free agents. We are still a top tier team despite our age. It takes so long to get to the top of the hill that you HAVE to do what ever you can to prolong your stay. For us this means signing a Vet FA or 2 that can help us win. I think Sheed is our guy. Who knows though. It is just not time to reload unless a deal to good to pass up comes along. If everyone was healthy right now, we would be in the mix of the CAVs and Lakers gunning for the title. There is at least a 50% chance that we are healthy next post season so add to that a Sheed type player and we have a good shot at another title. I know people think that we hurt ourselves in the long run by doing this. Yes we might get more value by trading one of the big 3 now as opposed to waiting but the development of Rondo and others will benefit by keeping HoFers around.
step 5: Trades. I agree with the post about the trades with GS in theory. We have too large a roster of contributing layers right now. If we could consolidate our talent by making a 2 or 3 for one type deal and then fill the void with young gungs I would be all for that.

I think the S.Jackson idea is a good one. He would be a GREAT sixth man imo. And he would slide so nice into the starting line-up if Pierce or Ray misses any time. I would do whatever it took to get it done. I also agree with re-signing Powe, Baby, and Marbs. Chris Anderson would be a nice addition as well.
I hope we can be like the Spurs (and Celts of the 80's) who had a stretch where they were winning trophies every other year over the course of 4-5 years.

1. sign marbury, bbd, and powe.
2. try to trade 3 scrubs for a wing player that can d.(going to be tough for this trade to happen)
3. use mle on a big (zaza,sheed,rasho,etc)

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
The realistic option:
1. Sign Sheed for the MLE
2. See the offers that Baby gets, and maybe work out a sign and trade for a defender swing player. Of course this in contingent on us getting Sheed. Maybe a player like Raja Bell, who will be in the final year of his contract making a little over $5m.
3. Trade Scal, TA, Giddens, Pruitt and a future pick for Nocioni.
4. Sign Powe to the minimum.
5. Try to convince Diogu to come in on a vet minimum one year deal
Roster: Perk, Sheed, KG, Diogu, Noc, PP, Bell, Ray, Rondo, Eddie, Billy W, Powe,
C - Perk (30), Sheed (12), KG (6)
PF - KG (26), Sheed (12), Noc (10)
SF - PP (34), Noc (12), Bell (2)
SG - Ray(32), Bell (16)
PG - Rondo (34), Eddie (12)
Leaves us thin at PG, guess maybe Bell and Eddie could play together to help Eddie with ball handling duties, or maybe we could pick up a vet guy, assuming Marbury is looking to cash in.

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
I still think my dream offseason is looking great:
1. Trade for Stephen Jackson (TA, Scal, Pruitt, Giddens). Throw in 3 mil so they can cut Giddens and Pruitt. Is there anyone better we can reasonably get? Why does GS do this? They do this for flexibility as they already have Maggette who nobody wants and Crawford, Ellis, Morrow, and Azubuike at the 1-3 positions. Also, Anthony Randolph maybe a 3 as well and they might as well start playing him considering he was a lotto pick.
I love how everyone shittt and pisseddd on my idea of Jackson yet nobody has any better ideas for a long 3. Nocioni? Hes alright but hes not the shooter or defender that SJax is. Posey? Id love it and I think hes the next best guy available but will the owners spend on him? Maggette? Hes a knucklehead but I love the talent and I think under vet guidance he could be effective like he was in 2006 when LAC played PHO to 7 games in WC semifinals. Cassell and Brand made him know his role. He was unstoppable at times in that series! Are there any other ideas for guys we can get to replace Posey? Please don't tell me Giddens or Walker because thats pathetic!
2. Resign Powe and Baby - Davis is a no brainer and Powe would be as well pending health.
3. Try to sign Rasheed, Zaza or Birdman - this will be tougher then people think. I really feel we re-sign Baby and Powe (depending on his injury, will he be ready by October after tearing his ACL for the third time in April). Powe will only have like 5 months to be ready to play before the season starts. I would never underestimate this kid though with everything he has overcome. These 3 guys maybe tough to get. Zaza seems the most realistic. I would love to get Sheed as Powe rehabs for one yr. You can never have too much length.
4. Resign Marbury - Did you see what he did tonight in the 4th? This guy has been good for spurts. I think they need to learn hes not a catch and shoot guy. He needs the ball in his hands, putting it on the deck taking it to the rack and coming off pick and rolls shoooting/attacking/passing. Playing him with Allen and Pierce is stupid. He needs to play with one of them, House, Davis/Powe, and Perk. Let him play with as the 2nd option and watch him flourish as he feeds the others and scores on his own.
5. Kick Mikki Moore to the curb! I would rather have Mickey Mouse on the bench then Mikki Moore!

THOUGHTS?

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
We clearly have 8 more-or-less-healthy guys who belong in a playoff rotation, namely the ones who played tonight. Adding KG and Leon to that group gives:
C Perk, NEED, (KG/Davis)
PF KG, Davis, Powe, Scal
SF Pierce, NEED
SG Ray, House
PG Rondo, Marbury
Walker could fill one of the NEEDs.
So the biggest need is -- you guessed it -- a center. Will Gortat command more than the MLE? Notwithstanding how foul-prone he currently is, gambling on signing him might be interesting ...

Re: DREAM OFFSEASON!!!
I think SJax is a great idea. But you're not getting him for that steaming pile of dung. Even GS isn't that stupid.
i also think you're strongly overrating Posey. how'd he do in NO this year? did he take them to the "next level"? lol. Posey hit a few big shots for us, but overall he was not very good, and vastly overrated on this board. he's so not worth his deal now, let alone in 2 years.
I think you might be underrating Giddens and Walker. Both those guys are big-time players. They need to figure it out on D to get some PT, but with a year under them they should be ready for some mins next year.
I'm still not thrilled with the idea of re-signing Steph. i just think we can do better. people are thinking he's eventually going to be the steph of old, but 2 things: 1. the steph of old was a ball hog, and 2. he doesn't have the athleticism he once did. and don't tell me about being out of shape, he's had almost 3 months to get in shape. it's not like he's overweight. more likely he's just getting old. ok, i mean if he comes for the vet min or maybe 2 yr 4 mil, then sure. but anything more, and i think we look elsewhere for a backup pg.

I agree that it's time for Marbury to accept vet minimum and just chase rings.
The good news is that's rational for him. He doesn't need the money. Rebuilding his reputation would be worth more -- including in whatever business or charitable ventures he has in mind -- than just getting straight cash.
