What should our rotation be?

Given Romero, Litch, Janssen come back healthy. When or if McGowan/Marcum comeback healthy this year or next?

This year:

Halladay
Romero
Litsch
Richmond
Cecil

Next Year:

Halladay
Bedard (Stated numerous times he wants to play for Jays)
McGowan
Marcum
Romero
Cecil?
Litsch?
Richmond?

I gotta believe Cecil's going back down when the cavalry arrives. No way he pitches 100 today otherwise. So put Tallet in there. Janssen could be the long reliever.

I've heard some say JP should do a Bedard for prospects deal at the deadline this season, but (a) our prospects are pretty thin apart from pitching, and you can never have enough pitching, (b) Bedard is injury prone, and (c) Seattle may not be selling this year anyway in such a weak division.

I don't see Cecil up here for the entire season. They will need to limit his innings. He'll be the #2 or #3 guy next year for sure. McGowan and Marcum will also have assured spots if they are healthy.

There is no room for Erik Bedard, nor would I want an overpaid, injury prone malcontent anyway.

Bedard can state that he'd like to play for the Jays, but I wouldn't pencil him in yet. He'll be 31 by the time next season rolls around...this will be his one shot at a big-money deal and the only chance he'll have to dictate his fate, and unless the Jays are willing to slap down close to $100m over six years (and they shouldn't be, IMO) he'll likely be playing elsewhere.

Edit: does anyone else prefer Janssen out of the 'pen when we have some semblance of a rotation again? It seemed like his drop-and-drive delivery really broke down by the 60-70 pitch mark when he was starting...

I've never been a Litsch fan and I honestly don't have any faith in him getting back to being successful this year. He has mediocre stuff and doesn't have great composure. Let the young guys develop this year and only bring Litsch or Jansen in if they struggle badly.

wow, next year's pitching staff is filthy, quite possibly the best in baseball. Combine that with the best bullpen and one of the best defense, i don't see how we miss the playoffs

I still seem to be lost as to why we're penciling in Casey Jansen to be a starter. When exactly was he heralded as a starter anyway? He was a reliever for the entire 2007 season, and posted great numbers, and was supposed to be a reliever again in 2008, but of course as we all know, he missed the season. So why is it that we're putting him in the SL?

Yes, he started 17 games in 2006, but was 6-10 with an ERA over 5.

It will be hard to send Cecil down if he keeps pitching like this, but he is on an innings and pitch count limit this year, so the Jays won't be able to milk him as much as another starter. Plus, Cito Gaston is not the manager I want handling a young pitcher with those restrictions.

Tallet is another guy that would be hard to move back to the pen. He was brutal against the Royals, but outside of that one start he has been great (4 starts, 1.80 ERA, 25 innings). Of course it was against the Twins, A's, and Indians, but still. We will see how he does against Sabathia and the Yankees next week.

My guess is Romero will replace Ray. That is definite. Janssen and Litsch replacing Cecil and Tallet are the only other options, but if Cecil and Tallet keep performing well, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Predicting the 2010 rotation is pointless. At this time last year, who could have predicted a rotation of Halladay, Richmond, Tallet, Ray, and Cecil in 2009? Too many variables.

Looks like we are certainly in a position where we could trade one of Purcey or Litsch to attempt to upgrade our rotation at the deadline.

Janssen was very good as a starter in 2006 before he hurt his knee and lied to the team about it. I expect he'll be just fine in this area for now.

Long term, I see better options than him, but I doubt Romero (he had very poor #'s in the minors for years, I'm not ready to award him anything based on 3 starts), Litsch, Richmond or Purcey will be better for this season.

JP planned to use him as a starter in 2008. There was going to be a competition for the 5th starter position between Litsch and Janssen, which Litsch ended up winning by default.

M_T, you doubt Richmond will be better than Janssen this year?
