Would you be interested in Marion

Post#1 » by Rapsobsessed7 » Tue May 12, 2009 12:47 am

i was thinking of something on the lines of Marion (S&T), Roko, #9(derozan), for Wallace #13 (williams). Or maybe around diaw i know BC has had interest in both, when TJ was available both these players came up in that discussion. You would reunite Marion, Diaw and Bell together and get a player like Derozan who has superstar potential compared to williams whos a role player so is that something you would be interested in a S&T of shawn marion.

I don't see how we'd pull that deal off. Here's how it'd have to work:

1. Raptors draft DeRozan, Bobcats draft Williams
2. Raptors resign Marion at or below the MLE, he becomes BYC
3. Raptors trade Marion, Ukic, Derozan for Wallace and Williams.

Value wise, I guess I'd be fine with a MLE Marion over Wallace at his current deal, Ukic I could care less about, but it'd be nice to have DeRozan. I'm one of the few on the board that would prefer to have DD over TW, so I'm sure most posters would rather just go into next season with Williams and Wallace.

well marion wont sign for the MLE thats the thing.

It would have to be something like this.

July 1st:
Raptors Trade:
7, 550, 000 Shawn Marion 3 years
Rights to Demar Derozan
X 1.25 + 100,000
= 9, 537, 500

Bobcats Trade:
9, 500,000 Gerald Wallace
Rights to Terrence Williams

So roko could be taken out and it would save you 2 million a season and two years.

Do you think the Raptors will be under the cap after they sign Marion? If not he becomes BYC and his contract doubles if he's traded.

what are you talking about marion wont be BYC hes not getting a 20% raise on his contract?

BYC defines the salary that's used to compare players for compliance under the Traded Player exception (see question number 68 for more information about the Traded Player exception). Usually the salary used for comparison is the player's actual salary. But under either of the following circumstances, a different salary is used when comparing salaries for trading purposes:

The team is over the salary cap, used the Larry Bird or Early Bird exception to re-sign the player, and the player received a raise greater than 20% (unless it's the minimum salary).
The team is over the salary cap, it extended the player's rookie scale contract, and the player received a raise greater than 20%.
If either of the above apply, then the player is considered a base year player. A player remains a base year player for six months, or until June 30, whichever comes later. When trading a base year player, the salary used for comparison is the player's previous salary, or 50% of the first-year salary in his new contract, whichever is greater
.

The cap is supposed to drop to 56 million, were at 47 million in committed salaries and thats without our pick and we still hold the rights to defino so yes if we sign marion it puts us over the cap and delfino will likely be back same with Rasho and possibly parker so we will be over the cap but marion wont be BYC.

Didn't realize it was nullified if the player took a salary cut.

Marion and Wallace are equally injury prone, so it's a wash there. If LB likes DeRozan over Williams, I'm all for it.

well the thing that may be hard to do which is right is the draft picks be included thats really hard because you either have to agree to a contract on marion quick or sign the picks and trade them but you have to wait 30 days before doing that I believe. Roko although may not be recognized is 24 years old 1st year in the league and is a pretty decent PG that has potential. So could the picks be taken out if so this deal has a good shot at happening if not then it gets complicated and you couldnt really talk about it since its illegal to do so.

Raptors would have to pick player bobcats like
Bobcats would have to pick player raptors like
Marion would either have to sign on July 1st or soon or else the picks get complicated

Theres potential i believe for a deal here, marion gives you more rebounding and reunited with Bell/Diaw under Brown would be good for him. You shed 2 million a year and get a shorter contract with less years and could work with either Diaw or Wallace bc had interest in both so it could have some merit.

Sorry its not gonna happen, Wallace is still relatively young and has really only played 5 seasons as a starter. Marion's mileage is going to hit him alot sooner than Wallace's injuries will catch up. The only way we'd consider this is keeping our pick.

I have no interest at all in Ukic. Did you just realize the part about having to wait to swap the picks? I guess looking back I didn't make it clear, but I thought of that immediately, it's weird the BYC nonissue was the hangup.

I just thought of that when you mentioned the factors affecting the trade from happening. Such as the raptors/bobcats choosing players they like respectively. It could get complicated with the picks it could get done but its difficult but a 1 for 1 S&T is much easier. With the picks it may have to be two separate deals but marion would not be BYC

I don't see our FO agreeing to Wallace for Marion straight up. Maybe Marion + Humphries?

adding hump i dont see as a difference maker especially if we do a Evans/Kapono swap, Hump is only 24 and can be a good big off the bench id be sad to see him go because he was injured this season and i expected good numbers from him but Wallace is the near perfect compliment to Bosh/Bargnani so thats done by me.

Marion 7,500,000
Hump 2,900,000

Wallace 9,500,000

Again if it made it better for you we could add in a Banks/Nazr swap to save you some money

Marion 7,000,000
Hump 2,900,000
Marcus Banks $4,553,793
= 14, 453, 793

Wallace 9,500,000
Nazr Mohammed $6,466,600
= 15, 966, 600

again the last part doesnt have to happen just another idea but the marion/Hump for wallace works for me.

Amen to that!!

I just don't see any incentive for the Bobcats to sign off on something like this? If it was Harden coming our way instead of DeRozan it might be a totally different story though.

If anything we should be getting the 9th straight up for doing the swap.

Crash for Matrix and the #9 would make a LOT more sense.

Guys Marion has become a poor mans Gerald Wallace. Have you seen him lately? I would pay the midlevel for him and no more. I wouldn't even start him even though he plays good with Diaw and I wouldn't want to trade Wallace because he is there.
Maybe I start him at the 2 over Bell.

I was going to agree with you but you lost me in last sentence.

However I´m not sure how motivated he would be here, how he would get along with Larry and I´m little worried about his impact to our chemistry (which I think is mostly great even with those several introvert personalities we´ve got on our team). And i would fear our board will be flooded with trade scenario centered around Nash or stoudemire (or both) and we would be nicknamed Suns.

Well don't get me wrong Gerald is obviously a sf and better off playing sf but it's not a stretch for him to play the 2. I mean he can guard sg's, he is listed as a sg/sf he is 6'7.
Alot of sg's play sf and sf's play sg like Iggy plays sg when he is really a sf.
Look at Artest, he plays sg now when he is a natural sf because of the lineup. Carter has moved back and fourth from sf and sg. When your a 6'5-6'7 athletic slasher type who can keep up with sg's and sf's it's easy to play them at either position.
Look at Pierce playing sf now and how easy of a transistion that was.

Here are just some sg/sf's who play both and some a sg's playing sf and vice versa

Iggy
Pierce
Artest
Carter
