Max contract restrictions

Post#1 » by BlaZeN27 » Thu Mar 26, 2009 5:33 am

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q11

It says that max contracts started at $16.5 Million in 2008 for players with 9 years of experience or less. How? 30% of this years cap is around $17.5 Million. This leads me to wonder what would max contracts start at for players with 9 years of experience or less in the infamous 2010 if the cap is set at $56.5 million? I'm assuming that there are other determining factors when it comes to setting the restriction for what max contracts can start at.

from the FAQ #11.
They use a different cap calculation to determine the maximum salaries, which is based on 48.04% of projected BRI. For example, even though the actual salary cap for 2005-06 is $49.5 million the 0-6 year maximum salary is $12 million, not $12.375 million.

The downturn in the economy makes it seem even less likely players will change teams. In addition to the contract money being less the players have to wait longer for guaranteed money in order to change teams. I don't see it happening.

So if the salary cap is set at $56.5 Million in 2010, the most a max contract can start at for a player with 7-9 years experience will probably be less then $16 million?

Yep, it would be a hair below $15.9M.

How does the 105% rule play into this this?
I got a little confused reading it

I'm trying to figure out the max New Jersey can sign Devin Harris for

Uhh... Devin Harris isn't a free agent until the Summer of 2013. Who knows what the rules will be then.

How does the 105% rule play into this?

The max for the first year for a new contract for a specific player is the greater of:
the theoretical max (such as $15.9M as discussed above), or
105% of his prior salary.

I know you guys mentioned the max for guys with 7-9 years experience.

Just out of curiosity, what would the max be for a free agent with 2 years experience like Big Baby? Not what will he get, but what could he get.
