Mike Toth: Halladay "Nice Guy" but he isn't perfect

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Wed May 13, 2009 9:23 pm

Halladay is famous for his ferocious fitness regime and incredible focus as he prepares for his starts. His approach is no different than the solitary-style programs followed by pitchers of the past, such as Steve Carlton and Roger Clemens. But while Lefty and The Rocket were considered selfish boors who put their own needs in front of the team, Doc is celebrated for dancing to his own drummer because, well, he's a "nice guy".

While he might be nice, however, Halladay isn't perfect.

He refused to pitch at the World Baseball Classic in Toronto last March, even though his participation would have been a huge help in promoting baseball in the city. But rather than rip Doc for his decision, the media quickly came to his defence by claiming the WBC would ruin Roy's spring training routine.

Give me a break.

The fact is, Halladay has never come close to pitching in a playoff game and the incredible atmosphere during the Canada-USA tilt at the WBC would seem to be a much better preparation exercise than facing the Pirates on a Tuesday down in Dunedin.

Halladay is also well-known for talking to the media only when he sees fit and heading into his much-anticipated showdown with former Jays teammate A.J. Burnett, Doc decided to keep his thoughts to himself. During his Hall of Fame career, Carlton never talked to reporters and Clemens had a pick-and-choose media relations method. But while Carlton and Clemens were crucified for clamming up, Halladay once again seems to be above reproach.

haha wtf is wrong with Toth? I guess Doc must have hurt his feelings somewhere

So what if Doc doesn't like talkin to the media? nothing good ever comes out of it.. his job is to rack up the win column for us and he's doing a damn sure good job at it

Keep it up Doc

WOW,

Let's not forget that this is the same pitcher who did not test FREE AGENT waters, where if he was to ever go that route would make him the highest paid pitcher in the game.

But yeah, he's selfish.
Pretty neat and on the fridge for the real fans:

There was this beautiful girl in highschool that wouldn't talk to me either. Everyone said she was really nice, but eventually I decided she must be a bitch...

I say this without any malice, but Mike Toth is one of the dumbest people in Canadian sports media. Kouleas is up there too.

I don't know why Toth bothered posting this nonsense.

I never read Mike Toth's columns, when he's on T.V. I turn the channel, and when he's on the radio I turn it off. My life is better for it.

A box of human feces may or may not be en route to Mike Toth's doorstep.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

just an embarrassing article IMO.. how can you write an article about a man who just pitched an absolute gem last night with a huge spotlight on him? It seems like the only goal was to generate controversy (and thus more readers)..

I see this when hockey guys talk about other sports, or when a basketball guy talks about hockey. They have no problem ripping things that people within the sport would never rip. Toth also went after Nash for skipping the Olympics.

i don't know what's wrong with the guys at sportsnet. They seem to be lacking in journalistic ability and common sense. No wonder Toth got canned from TSN.

Toth is an idiot. No one is perfect. But as long as Doc keeps staying as close to perfect as he does on the mound I dont care if Mike Toth or any other media member doesnt get an interview prioir to one of the biggest Jays game in about a decade or more.

Seriously though, this is worse than the fans who call the Fan 590 and complain when one of the Jays go 0-4 on a night where the team scores 8+ runs.

Mike Toth doesn't know a thing about baseball. Doc is one of the most classy guys in the game. You just don't try and interview him on game days. He's there to do a job and at the end of the day you can talk to him about it. As someone commented on his blog, even Doc's wife avoids him on gamedays. While the hell would he want to talk to Toth or any other media person?

Mike Toth is a moron,

Not only does he have the worst jokes in sports broadcasting, which is actually a very difficult category to win with all the cretins currently employed by all of the major networks.

I have always found him to be a bit of a kuncklehead who seems to poke and prod at people (take shots) if you will when they are defenseless. (wasn't toth the one who let people call in a beat on wilner for some reason)

Anyways, he's a moron.

And not only that, he's a perv. I would bet on my life that Mike Toth has jerked it to Martine Gaillard. He has wanted her since the day she started, you could always tell, and he's kind of a perv about it sometimes too.

Hate that guy. The only thing he actually knows a damn thing about is Junior Hockey.

As did I... along with his stupid face.
Needless to say, I was close to shooting myself.
