Do we wanna keep Marvin?

Simple question. Simple answer. Do we wanna keep Marvin Williams and sign him to a nice deal. I think we need to S&T his ass outta here, and pickup a proven scorer.

I say keep him.

Before the season i was indifferent about resigning him. However this year he added a 3 pt shot and improved his finishing ability inside. He also became very assertive offensively when other guys were out. When JJ was out and when Smith/Bibby were out Marvin really stepped up. Plus he improved his rebounding and is a good defender.

Trading a RFA is very difficult. I haven't seen very many RFA trades where a team got back equal value for a RFA.

I really don't see how we can upgrade the 3 spot while also getting the needed help inside and at the point.

the only way you let him go is if you have an agreement to sign or trade for his replacement. Like the Matrix.

Keep him. Too many scary good SF in the east not enough bigs to worry about, I don't want the Hawks to be the only team without a horse in the race.

One possibility would be to move JJ to the 3 if we find a better option (than Marvin) at the 2. (For example, trade for Rip perhaps who's a more natural 2 than JJ.)

I'm always on the fence when it comes to Marvin. He's not a difference maker by any means. It's very common to watch Hawks games when you barely notice he's really playing. It bothers me when you're satisfied with being the 4th option on a team, and that's Marvin Williams, still he's got a big body that he can control a bit better now and has a lot of potential. His injuries have scared me as well, he's too young for all the problems he's had. In the right trade, I'd let him go though.

i just dont see many trades that could improve the hawks by getting rid of him. it would be a disaster going into the season with Mo evans as the starting SF.

The problem with Marvin and Horford are qualities that most teams kill to have, they are coachable. If the scheme calls for them to be garbage men or the 4th option they will step right in line because the coach believes that's what's good for the team. They both come from championship TEAMS with great coaches and did not enter the league as the man ever in their career outside of highschool. All I know is that when options 1-3 have gone down Marvin decisevly stepped up and showed that he could be an even greater option hitting the boards, knocking down clutch shots, and scoring big numbers and I don't ever want to give up on that.

You definitely want to keep Marvin as an "asset," which means you either S&T him or match an offer. You DO NOT let him walk for nothing.

Any decisions about keeping him will depend on 1.) the price, and 2.) the S&T offers. My guess is that he'll be re-signed for $8-9M/year on average. (Slightly less than guys like Prince, Wallace, and Howard).

Unless we can package him in a S&T for Bosh or Amare, you have to keep him. He still has loads of potential and has steadily improved every year. And like someone mentioned above, he's a good locker room guy and seems to take coaching very well.

His major negatives are his injury problems and that he's soft as charmin. If he ever developed a nasty streak (I know...not likely) he could be very very good. Unfortunately, he's got more Josh Childress in him than Ron Artest.

For the SF position, we don't have as gifted a defender as Marvelous anywhere else on our roster, nor do we have even decent opportunities to acquire one. Trading him will hurt us unless we get enough on the return to overcome that, which I don't think I've seen you spell out.

All you've said is you think he could get us a "proven scorer." Just how many shots do you think there'll be left in our offense? I'm guessing you think this proven scorer will take the ball out of the hands of those already doing the shooting. How do you think THAT will work out? Look it up, Marvelous gets the ball to shoot, most often, with LESS THAN 8 SECONDS left on the shot clock. He gets the ball that way 43% of the time, by far the most of his opportunities. If this "proven scorer" changes that, who do we force into that position? Our guards won't allow that, which you might have noticed.
