A Starting Rotation Idea

Post#1 » by jalenrose#5 » Sun May 17, 2009 3:33 am

My idea is a 6 man starting Rotation. Of Course Doc Halladay goes every 5th day, but my idea is with the influx of rookie pitchers on the roster and wanting to keep their innings below 170, this might be a way of doing it. Also, the Jays can manage their rotation in a way that they can create matchups if need be. Of course that means one less bullpen pitcher, but remember, that extra starter in the rotation can always be the long man if the need would ever pop up.

It's just an idea, but with JP's inability to want to do anything right now with this rotation, this is the idea I came up with. Going down to AAA are Robert Ray and Brian Wolfe (until one of the 5 cannot take it anymore and need a AAA stay).

Halladay then Richmond/Romero/Janssen/Cecil/Tallet

Doc, Cecil, Tallet, Romero, Richmond will be the starting 5 at the end of the year.

Marcum could return ahead of schedule. Also, don't count on Richmond to be there for very long.

I'm not the only one who finds it ironic that the OP accuses JP of being seemingly incapable of getting anything right and then goes on to suggest we go with a 6 man rotation like its a good idea, right?

I'll give the OP points for thinking outside the box, but it just wouldn't be wise if you have 5 guys who are better than the other options.

thanks rkid for giving me props. I'm thinking outside the box no doubt, it's just with rookies they're gonna either hit a rookie wall or they're gonna reach their inning limit. I'm not accusing JP of anything, he's just leaving Janssen and Romero in the minors because he's afraid of ruffling feathers right now. I guess since they're 26-14...if it ain't broke don't fix it, but really having Ray back in AAA and maybe Richmond if he continues to get rocked by lefties is better for the jays in the end.

Janssen should be brought along slowly (as a middle reliever)... Romero deserves to get his spot back in place of Ray.

Ricciardi doesn't know what he is doing because is not used to making decisions on a winning team. His philosophy seems to be "let's just go with what works". If this ruins Romero's mojo, it would be pretty bad.

Well, it's not a guarantee that Romero would have picked up right where he left off anyway.

I'm with JP on this one. Ride the hot arms for as long as possible.

I do agree with bringing up Janssen for middle relief and that this is JP's first real test at shuffling players, though.

i actually think the idea was very neat, and well thought-out. The OP did list some very good positives that can come out of it....

I think one of the main reasons why I can't see it happening is because it would seem unprecedented, and with such tradition in baseball, Gaston might get flamed heavily if it doesn't work out, and it could be blamed if we fall out of the race.

I agree with this. Although I might add an exclamation point.

What's funny is how everyone has ideas to make things better....when this team is doing pretty well. Honestly, if let's say Ricky Romero never starts for us again this year because none of the current starters loses their position, then that's a good thing. And I won't miss Romero.

I think that we need to make a trade. We have too much quality starting pitching at the moment. We have some good looking rookie pitchers that other teams are going to covet, and it looks like the Jays are finally going to try to compete this year.

Consolodate the starting rotation by moving depth for quality.

The problem with any move is we need to know what's happening with Marcum and McGowan. Don't we? What if these two aren't any good when they get back from injury.

Agreed. I think that its wishfull thinking that this rotation is going to be able to hold up thru the riggors of a full season and when you have to go into places like fenway or yankee stadium and play meaningfull games late in the year. We need to somehow aquire a guy who after Halladay can go out everyday and give your team a chance to win and moreso a veteran pitcher. We need to find a team that is short on young arms and try to pawn off someone like Litsch or Purcey to them. Maybe add in a lower tier prospect if need be. Houston is a team who very well should be out of the playoff race well before the deadline and Id look long and hard at aquiring Wandy Rodriguez.

Id feel comfortable going down the stretch with this pitching lineup

Halladay
Rodriguez
Richmond
Jannsen
Tallet

You never know how many chances your going to have in potentially catching the yankees in a down year or even the Rays whos future looks bright. Also the teams that aren't leading there divisions dont look too good this year (the white sox, tigers, indians of the world) so I really hope JP is willing to make a trade for a bonifide starter if we are still in contention near the deadline.

It's not that he won't be effective, but the team wants to limit Cecil's innings this year. I highly doubt we will see him in the major league starting rotation in September.

What Tallet is doing is unsustainable, and he will be back in the bullpen at some point (probably in June).

Romero is going to have prove himself at AAA again it appears. Litsch and Janssen are above him on the depth charts.

And of course, Marcum and McGowan may even come back by then. It's just a really hard thing to project right now.

Before someone asks why M_T is sure:

Tallet's success in unsustainable because he has a ridiculously low BABIP. It is .211; pitchers just don't keep that up, even on great defensive teams.

I can't think of a team that ever had the problem of too much starting pitching.

Robert Ray is one bad start away from a ticket to Syracuse, with Romero or maybe Janssen coming in to take his spot. You could say the same thing about Cecil. He hasn't exactly rocked the house at the AAA level so he can't be mad about being sent down.

who cares about AAA if they're doing great in the big leagues. Cecil looks great right now. big league stats trumps minor league stats
