The young free agent big men are either a bargain or a risk
These are those who are still young and probably won't cost much to sign.
I wonder if Clifford Ray could help turn around a few of these players who still haven't done much in the NBA.
I guess it's for Ainge to decide who among these players is an upgrade over both Powe and Davis. What I see are a lot of inconsistent, unproven, injury prone and/or undersized power forward/centers. Villanueva might be the only unrealistic option here.
One of these guys must be a bargain. Frye or Bass, maybe. McRoberts?
Sean May RFA
Channing Frye RFA
Chris Wilcox
Josh McRoberts RFA
Charlie Villanueva RFA
Brandon Bass
Linas Kleiza RFA
Robert Swift
Ike Diogu RFA
Shelden Williams
Johan Petro RFA
And you could add Yi Jianlian to this list who's reportedly on the trading block. But, he seems more likely to frustrate you than impress. His next team will need to have a lot of patience.

No one on that list would see many if any mins. Frye, Bass, Villenueva are the best, but don't really fit in with our team.

Swift is the only C...also Petro has the size.
I like Bass, but he looks to stay in Dallas...Maybe Sheldon Williams for defensive purposes.
I think we should sign one of Petro/Swift if we can get them around 2mio

Re: The young free agent big men are either a bargain or a risk
I remember that Swift was playing well for then Seattle one season, even starting some. I've to figure Ainge could kick the tires on him this off-season. Because he did attempt to have Swift included in the Ray trade to no avail. NBA dot com list Swift at 7'1'' and 270 lbs. which, if accurate, is an improvement over his former lanky frame.
Edit: I knew it, it was his second season that he began to show signs of promise, and then was lost to injury. Looking at his statistics, he looks as if he was returning to form this season before suffering a serious injury again. I think it's his proneness for injuries which is ruining his career. I take it he could be a viable backup at worst if only he can remain healthy. Shame. That's too bad. He's only twenty-three.

I think Kleiza is a good player to have , however the others are not enough to get it done, might as well keep Moore if Diogu is the alternative

I like Brandon Bass a lot, but most of these guys are undersized. Wilcox would be good if cheap. Not a really interesting bunch overall, I'd just go for an old guy that's proven instead.

DA likes Robert Swift... why not let him fill the Mikki Role at least?

We could live without him, but Diogu catches my eye as a post guy who is underrated as a result of having played for Jim O'brien.
I'll add Cheikh Samb to the list as well. On one hand, I've wanted him on the C's for years. On another hand, I assume there's a reason he couldn't stick with either the Clippers or the Knicks last season.

I am not interested in anyone who is not at least 6-10 or has the wingspan of a 7 footer.
No more undersized players, please!

Re: The young free agent big men are either a bargain or a risk
I would gladly take a flier on Swift over Moore if Swift's the alternative. Swift will get some looks from teams based on his age and somewhat upside. It depends, you either look at it as a young center with potential who hasn't realized that potential due to injuries. Or you'll view Swift as a career backup who'll always deal with injuries season after season. I feel like he's worth the gamble. Take a chance if you're Boston. What do you've to lose if you're Ainge? Because Swift's market value is likely moderate interest (teams are always looking for big man help) to low. I'm throwing in my support for Swift also because the reality is that Rasheed Wallace or Andersen probably are unlikely options. And Ainge is filling in holes for the bench, not for starters. A big difference.
Also, Oklahoma City will have the third selection in this year's draft. Could they select Hasheem Thabeet? Either way, Swift probably will be viewed as expendable. I think Mouhamed Sene is the other free agent center they have.
