Another max player on the celtics?
Is rondo really a max player, or even close? I know he had a good two rounds, but man... what are your thoughts?

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
if Rondo is your max. player, then you are in a big trouble.
As much as I love Rondo ,he is not a max.salary material. He deserves 8-9 million $ per year
40m-50m for 5 years is acceptable imo

If Rondo wants the max then he will be getting it with another team. Ainge and the Celtics will never pay him the max salary.

Yup. But Rondo wasn't asking for the max, was he? I hope not because if that's what he's looking for, he won't be on the Celtics after next year.

I'm glad we have non-Celtic-fan trolls telling us how to run the team!

It's still 17 to 11!!!!

If he shows improvements next season but doesn't improve his jumper much, I'd say no. I just hope he spends the Summer shooting at least 500 jumpers per day.

He was supposed to do that last year, remember?

He did have an injury so I'm not sure how bad it was. This season he has no excuses. I just hope he has the ambition and work ethic and he should be fine.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
This is exactly what I was worried about with Rondo. Have those borderline stars/role players that end up commanding big bucks kills teams IMO. I hope he takes a home town discount like Perk did. He's my favorite player but I don't think he can be the man on a team. Next year will be his 4th year in the league and they say that is when a pg really starts to "get it" It will be interesting to see what happens.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
10 mio per year is realistic. He is just too inconsistent to deserve more...He looks like the best player in the league one day and just horrible the next...He has a long way to go to establish himself as one of elite PG`s in this league...

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
He is not even an elite passer yet in the sense that his assist totals aren't coupled with the ballhandling skills of an elite PG, and yes he is inconsistent. That said, factoring age, postseason performance, consistency in improvement as well as an objective statistical analysis, he would very arguably be considered a near max player right now despite imperfections.
Having max level players on your team is not a bad thing. We just need to capitalize so our owners can take in revenue and afford to go over the cap.
I don't think we should extend him until we have to, especially if we feel we might have some cap room before '10-11. His cap hold will be less than a fair salary.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
I'm going to say something that might get me kick off this site but what the heck I'm going to say it anyway. I think Rondo is the 2nd most important player on the Celtics team. At the rate he is going there is no doubt in my mind we will all say that he might be the 2nd best player on the team this time next year. Is Rondo a max player right now? Maybe not but his upside and they way he had improved each season Yes he should get a max contract. Name me 5 better PGs in the league that had an impact on both ends of the court? Yes there are some pg's in the league who are better scorers and passers but Rondo is the best rebounding PG in the game. His ast totals in the play-offs was top. I recall people saying the same things about Tony Parker and too me Rondo is a much better player at this point in his career then Tony Parker was. All he had to do really is improve his jump shot and free throw shooting. I think all he need to do is just keep his elbow in on his shot. He's not that far off from becoming a solid shooter. He already is one of the if not the top guard when it comes to scoring in the paint.

Correct but that is partially because he is able to play off of his teammates. Overall on a per shot attempt type basis, his teammates are a bit more efficient than him.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
In my mind Rondo is worth a Max deal for as long as we can sign him. That is 6 years now right or still 7 if you are retaining someone? That said, I would try to avoid paying him max money as you would always try to get the best deal you can. The league probably doesn't value him as Max quite yet. I think resigning him now if we can do it for significantly less than then Max makes a lot of sense. We are never going to have cap room, we can forget those notions.
I have a lot of faith in Rondo. I really do not want to see us losing him unless we get LBJ in a trade. That is how much I like Rondo and his still to come upside. I have thought about this a lot. LBJ is the only guy I would trade him for. Him and Ray for LBJ or him and PP or KG what ever year only deal I would do.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
the debate shouldn't be whether he is currently a max contract player, but rather will he become a max contract player...
There is no question that Rondo needs work on his jumper and he probably needs to front his man more often on Defense, but I think Rondo has a Steve Nash like ceiling. Lost in the midst of Steve Nash's career making 5 year run, was the first 5 years where he wasn't that great at all. His career averages of 14pts and 8 assits justify this.
I think a consistent 18-6-8 is what you are going to see from Rondo. If he developes a Tony Parker esq jumper and hits 70-75% of his FT that might be higher. Will it be next year? or the year after? That is what management has to decide when judging Rondo's worth. If someone where to tell me we would have a PG droping 18-6-8 and playing All Defensive Team type of D, I would say he is a max contract player.
I think the Celtics are right to wait until after next season to make this judgement.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
sigh. This is what I feared when we were rebuilding with AL Jefferson.
Jefferson took a discount in MINN. If Rondo won't I'd rather let him go then pay him more then 13 mil a year.
A max contract is what? 21 million a year?

Don't worry, if Rondo wants the max his negotations with Ainge will be short and sweet, about 3 minutes.

The thing is the Celtics don't have to pay Rondo right now. They can wait until after next season to do so. With that being said I feel they will NOT trade Ray Allen this off-season or at any point in the season. They will use the cap space left by Ray Allen to re-sign Rondo. I can see a case where they re-sing both Rondo and Ray Allen where Rondo get the max deal and Ray will get the MLE.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
Right. Which is why I said the Celtics are right to wait.
They didn't need to extend Perkin when they did, but they signed a very raw center to a 4 year 20 million dollar deal. At the time it looked crazy. Now it looks like a bargain.
If Rondo asks for 5 years 40 million do the Celtics have to take that?
Its all speculation until he signs or doesn't, but I think waiting and having flexibility is the right move.

Re: Another max player on the celtics?
anything under 10 million you take it.
Another point, in this article they say they want to keep the financial flexibility by waiting to sing him... umm his new contract wouldn't kick in until his old one expires.
We wouldn't lose any flexibility this year by signing Rondo and next year the market is going to be inflated by 2010 cap space teams that lost out on their chance to sign superstars anywho.
