Trading for a Star

Post#1 » by Rod700 » Tue May 19, 2009 8:52 pm

We are a well balanced team, but some posters feel that another star to play alongside Joe is needed to take us to the next level. Below is a list of talented players. I won't apply the term "star" to all of them. I tried to list players on teams that either fell short of their prior success this year, teams that are failing to make progress, teams that are on the way down the crapper, and players that could be traded for contract/capspace reasons. I was liberal in those definitions, so the list isn't precise. Feel free to add or take away from the list and please tell why a particular players would be good to target when considering talent, contract, injury, etc., etc.

Tim Duncan (due to age and 1st round loss), Ginobli (due to injury)
McGrady (last year, injuries)
B. Davis
Nash (last year)
Wade (last year if opts out)
Hamilton (last year)
Redd (last year if opts out)
Jefferson
V. Carter
Bosh
Arenas
A. Jamison

C. Butler
Calderon
Tyson Chandler
Kaman, Camby (last year)
Shaq (last year)
T.J. Ford (last year if opts out)
Okefur
Bogut

(I know some of these guys have already come up: Bosh, Carter, Ford).

EDIT EDIT: PS I am NOT suggesting that all of these players would be good choices. I know that someone is going to assume that.

I hate to be conservative, and I'd love to see us go after a true star, but Caron Butler stands out as an aggressive player with heart that we could use.

By all means though guys, don't be afriad to take a shot at a homerun trade. I know it's the mark of death on a realgm board to propose a trade for a star (as it's the easiest thing to undermine and make fun of), but it never hurts to offer.

For instance, I'd offer JJ and Hortford for Tim Duncan and a 2nd rounder. I read an article that said that Duncan's ability to defend the basket as well as he used to was a big reason they lost in the 1st round. Of course he is still a great player, but you never know, they may want to restructure their team while he still has great trade value. Common sense tells me they will probably say no to this trade, but it's solid enough and the timing is right that I would definitely pick up the phone and make the offer. Feel free to throw out similar homerun trades guys.

I see what you mean.
I'm a Spurs fan with Hawks season tix. The Spurs think they can still win titles and I think a healthy Manu would have them still alive in these playoffs. Duncan is a top 15 reg season player and still the top low post playoff performer in the league. Switch Duncan and Howard and Orlando might have swept Boston. Ewing should be ashamed to admit that he coaches the kid on offense.

Back to the point. I'd love to see Horford/Marvin/Speedy for Bosh or Amare, though I can't see why the Suns would trade Amare, except that Kerr is a GM under lots of pressure.
To do the Bosh trade the hawks would have to have Bosh either wave his opt out or something to insure that he just doesn't walk after one season.
I'd like to see Rick sund offer Gordon of the Bulls 60mil over 5 years to start next to JJ.

Then deal with Flip and ZaZa or their replacements.
Just for argument sake they resign Flip to 10 mil over 3 and ZaZa 15 over 3.

Then the salary structure is similar to last year. Bring back Chill and they are a championship contender

5. Bosh or Amare/ZaZa/Solo
4. Josh/??????
3. Mo/West
2. JJ/Flip
1. Gordon/AC/Gardner

Joe Johnson for OJ Mayo, Darko Milicic, Lakers Draft pick. Why? Meh I like OJ. He gives Atlanta a dynamic young scorer and perimeter defender that could blossom into a star. Shoots from anywhere, can slash and finish, some PG skills basically a younger more explosive Joe. Darko gives us a decent big off the bench to throw at bigger centers.
Why would Memphis do this? I'm not going to feed into the wash that OJ is a player that screams for the limelight of a larger market, from a basketball standpoint the Grizzlies are extremely young with not one productive Vet. Joe replaces OJs production immediately at the 2guard while giving them quiet leadership and consistentency. Joe could be a more complimentary passer to Conley's penetrating style and allow Gay to be the man again down in Memphis. They also get out of Darko's contract and if they win the lottery, with Griffin in tow, Gasol, Rudy, Conley, veteran Joe and capspace their 3 year plan automatically gets pushed up as they can possibly contend for a playoff spot next season.
Not exactly along the lines of the OP but hey I took a stab.

JJ and Horford (not Hortford) for Duncan would be a bad trade because Duncan is old. He is a great player... just too old.

The problem with trading for Bosh and Amare is that their contracts run out in a year so it wouldn't be wise to trade Horford in that deal... Marvin, Speedy, Random for Bosh or Amare would be better for the Hawks.

JJ for OJ Mayo and Darko would be a bad idea for the Hawks... Darko is not work his contract and he sucks... OJ isn't as good as Joe. I like OJ Mayo... but not nearly that much.

We can let Marvin walk and go after Ron Artest... Artest would give the Hawks a great defender and a good scorer. The problem with Artest is his poor shot selection and attitude... Most people probably wouldn't want Artest on the Hawks. Even with Artest we are not winning a championship... we still need a big man.

1.) Absolutely no scenario where Duncan is going to be traded.
2.) We have no cap space so pursuing Gordon or Artest is impossible unless they take less than MLE to play here which is also not going to happen because they can go to Boston/Cleveland/Denver, etc, etc if they really just want to win.
3.) If there's a chance to get Bosh or Amare, you absolutely do it regardless of expiring contract.
4.) Out of the above mentioned tradeable people: Vince Carter, McGrady, Jefferson, Jamison, Kaman and Chandler should be the most attainable - The last two would actually make sense from a team perspective. The others would be lateral moves.
