Clayton says Seahawks 2nd on Vick list.

Post#1 » by Danny Darko » Tue May 19, 2009 10:44 pm

Vick is scheduled to be released from prison into home confinement this week. If things go right for him and commissioner Roger Goodell allows Vick to return to the NFL after two years in prison, he could be at training camp around Aug. 10, according to a source.

Here are some unconfirmed -- repeat unconfirmed -- possibilities.

1. St. Louis Rams: The Rams are set at quarterback with Marc Bulger, but the organization has someone who knows Vick -- general manager Billy Devaney. After being in prison the past two years, Vick can't be expected to come in and be a regular, every-down player. He's missed too much time and he just hired a trainer to get him ready for a training camp. Kyle Boller was signed to a one-year contract as a backup quarterback. On paper, the Rams aren't viewed as a playoff contender. Devaney and new coach Steve Spagnuolo are trying to rebuild the talent base. If Devaney gets the approval of ownership, Vick could be an interesting prospect for the future.

2. Seattle Seahawks: Jim Mora was Vick's head coach in Atlanta during some of Vick's best days. Mora is on the record as being one of Vick's biggest supporters and has kept in touch with him during the past couple of years. Selling Vick's signing to owner Paul Allen might be tough, though. Allen purchased the Seahawks as a community service to keep the franchise in town. The benevolent owner might not be willing to accept the potentially bad publicity that could come from a Vick signing. The Seahawks are set at quarterback with Matt Hasselbeck and Seneca Wallace. But Vick knows he has a friend in Mora.

Would you want him?

I suppose if Matt was truly washed up I'd think about it, but I hated Vick before the scandal and didn't think he could throw in the pocket worth a damn.

I also don't care about all the forgiveness talk. Drowning dogs in his pool? Screw that guy for good in my eyes. I don't see him being positively changed to the degree I care about. I also don't see Tim going for a guy with that severe a character issue.

How could anyone possibly conceive of Ruskell inviting Vick to camp? :jawdrop:

I have doubts that Paul Allen who suffered through all the bad publicity of the "Jailblazer" era in Portland will want to do the same with the Seahawks signing Vick.
Furthermore Vick is a fantastic athlete but a mediocre player. He would not start ahead of Hasselback barring injury

Although it seems at times that Jim Mora and Greg Knapp are hell-bent on bringing in everyone who ever played for them, I'm guessing Ruskell says no.

I've long suspected that I lack a soul, given that I've advocated for the Mariners to sign Barry Bonds to a DH role (hey, someone on that team needs to hit) and I generally can overlook any personal-life misgivings if players can win games. I mean, I'm not going to invite any of these athletes to a backyard BBQ, I just root for the teams they play on, y'know?

So that said, if Vick can produce in some capacity, I don't have a problem with giving him a shot. I wouldn't expect much, and would love to be surprised.
