NASH Wants More Money

Post#1 » by Mr. Sun » Wed May 20, 2009 1:59 am

Duffy said Nash would ask for a raise from the current deal, which is slated to expire after paying him $13.125 million for the 2009-10 season.

"This is kind of a perplexing time because he (Nash) absolutely wants to win and he loves the (Phoenix) market but all the pieces have to line up properly," Duffy said. "We just want to wait and see what their game plan is so we can sign off on it. We respect their willingness to extend his contract but we also are very cognizant of the team dynamic to make sure it will work in terms of Steve's goals, which are to win a championship."

Bye Steve.

Phoenix Stan at BSOTS sums it up best:

Phoenix Stan wrote:To demand this kind of say in the organization's future when he will at best be in Phoenix for only 3 more years is not acceptable. To ask for an increase over his current contract in the final years of his career is not reasonable. If Nash isn't willing to accept a lessor role and an appropriate contract for his age and with his known back issues then the Suns need to consider walking away.

Heck, let me just link to his post on it, b/c he makes some good points, especially about Duffy's "we'll sign off on it"

This stinks of Duffy more than Nash...

In saying that...Nash could easily tell Duffy I've made my money and I want to stay in Phoenix

There's NO chance he gets a raise...

So...New York anyone? I'll be pissed if we get Nate....I'd take Lee and Duhon and that'll do...

Yeah I agree it reeks more of Duffy than Nash. Unless Nash said this stuff to force a trade without directly asking for one. I think though it is more trying to prevent the Suns from lowballing Nash (ex like 3 mil a year). I think its just a tactic and would not look too much into it.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like Nash is as good as gone.

It does sound a little reminiscent of when Matrix wanted a max extension. Not to that capacity but still in that line of thought.

Just to play devil's advocate - recall that at the peak of his career, back-to back MVP's, huge draw and merch sales for the Suns, Nash was 3rd in salary behind Trix and Amare.
Maybe his agent reckons they've already been accomodating

^have to remember what we signed him for out of Dallas, after they declined to sign him for the bigger offer we made...

This sounds like Duffy's maneuvering for a New York move - more endorsements, back with DA, Nash has a place there etc...I think most Suns fans, those not blinded by Nash the player, will recognise for the good of the franchise, Nash cannot receive a raise for the Suns to continue on their 'run'...or whatever the hell we're on at the moment!

DID SOMEONE SAY TAKE NATE?!?!?!?!?!? THANKS, I'D LOVE TOO!! But for real, im glad this came out so we can finally get rid of him. Only teams i could really see taking him are Toronto, NY, and Portland.

Toronto guys on the trade board are inquiring about Nash, but giving ridiculous ideas (Caldrone/Humphries/$$$ for Nash and our #14).

NY, i heard Lee (re-signed), Duhon, and pick (#8) for Nash, Hill, and #14. I understand if we trade Nash then Hill will leave, and i LOVE LEE, but Duhon?? He's not the starting PG that we need. That is a not that good of a deal. It also depends on Lee's s&t terms ($$$/years locked in). I also heard Duhon and Hughes. Bad and worse. Hughes is on a downhill slide and is no where close worth his contract.

Portlands fans say no, but i think the FO would say yes. From Portland i could see a Sergio, Webster, Outlaw, and Picks(???) for Nash and Tucker. No way they give up Bayless. Im just glad this might be the end of the "Nash era". Bring on the "STAT era". Build around Amare like we should have the past couple of years.

I'd like Davis/Heinrich/Sessions to be our PG. Or draft Flynn/Lawson/Holiday and let him start so they can develop their game ala' Rondo in Boston. Let Dragic start and develop him. We just need to start developing our PG's ourselves. It's hard finding a good PG in FA or a trade because teams usually want to keep them. Everyday a little bit of me dies deep down inside thinking of how our team would be if we kept Rondo.

Why couldn't you put that first so I didn't need to read the rest of this...

I'll damn near resign as a mod if Nate comes here...yes I hate him that much...
I don't see POR wanting him, not with Blake/Sergio/Bayless/Roy all able to play the point, albeit it at varying levels.
Knicks seems to be the most logical trade.
I can see them moving Amare to CHI, Nash to NY..and us ending up with Hinrich, DLee, Ty Thomas, Tim Thomas and the #8...something like that

You can't build around Amare IMO...he hasn't shown the leadership or the tools to be the first banana.

^ Now that you put it that way, I could see why this sounds more like Duffy than Nash. But despite Nash being my favorite player, for this franchise to move forward and make steps towards the future, Nash cannot ask for a raise if he wants to stay with us.

A lot of signs does point to Nash (or Duffy) wanting to leave Phoenix indirectly. The raise is one pretty obvious sign, but for any player his age, I think taking a pay-cut (look at Hill) would be for the better of the team. The other sign is the fact that he's waiting o see how the roster would turn out before making a decision, not saying he's disloyal or anything, but if he were totally serious about ending his career in Phoenix, he would've asked for a reasonable extension already.

Don't forget, he left Dallas for the money...so it's not like this is unprecedented.

In the end, is it really about the money? Or does he just want to leave to chase a championship or a change of scenery?

He said it's not about the championship or winning, it's about being on a team with good chemistry and basically enjoying the job.

For what Nash is supposed to do, or have done, for the franchise, and in particular for his cult-like status with the fans, he'd be underpaid at the current 13mil per year.

Fact 1: Nash is the undisputed franchise player of the Suns

Fact 2: Suns management said he was the face and the franchise and they wanted to build around him.

Fact 3: Most importantly, as Nash fans repeatedly reminded us of, Suns can not win games without Nash.

He deserves a max contract for his value to the Suns! I just don't understand you opportunistic fans attitude. On the one hand, you say Nash is the best. OTOH, you want him to sacrifice on his salary so you could give money to the also-runs like Shaq and Amare. Can I say, hypocrite!

Your three "facts" are correct IMO, but I don't see how that leads to "and the 35 year old point guard deserves a max contract and control over our offseason decisions!" I really don't. You can say 'hypocrite' but it only makes you look like a homer.
