Third Suns Star Expresses Doubt

Third Suns Star Expresses Doubt
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=12707

We've already heard plenty of talk from Phoenix Suns All-Stars to make us wonder what the team will finally look like when the curtain goes up on the 2009-10 season. Shaquille O'Neal has questioned the team's commitment to winning, and even gone so far as to name Dallas and New Orleans as possible destinations for himself. More recently, Steve Nash has indicated that he's not willing to sign a contract extension or even talk about his future in Phoenix until he sees what the team looks like after free agency takes its toll. Today, Amar'e Stoudemire added his voice to the mix, talking to the guys at 790 AM The Zone in Atlanta.

"That's definitely not the business," said Amar'e, talking about being a part of a team that's slashing salary instead of building a contender. "That's definitely not what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to win a championship now. And, if the Phoenix Suns are trying to do that and they want to put the right pieces together to win a championship, we can, but if not, you'll find me elsewhere."

Stoudemire stopped short of saying he would demand a trade if key pieces of the team were removed this summer, and brushed aside talk of playing in a Hawks uniform since he spends a great deal of time in Atlanta. He did, however, admit that he would consider every option available to him in his pursuit of a championship.

"You always have to think about that. There are always options out there. My goal is to win a championship. Once I get 100% from this eye injury, which I'm pretty much there, then we look forward to the next move and whatever it takes to win a title. That's what I'm after."

Asked if anyone could stop him, Amar'e said he doesn't think it can be done.

"I personally don't think so. Just the fact that my size, quickness, and strength, the combination of those three things allows me to get around a lot of the big guys. You know what's tough for me at times when I post up? A smaller guy. You can shoot over the top of them, you know, but you never know if you give a small guy a little contact whether or not he may flop, you gonna take the offensive foul, he's very tricky, that sometimes throws you off a little bit."

The issue, of course, isn't whether or not Amar'e can score the basketball, but whether or not he will put forth the effort to stop anyone on the other end of the court. The Suns traded away their best defender in Raja Bell, and seemed content to play absolutely no defense for much of the 2008-09 season. Amar'e seemed downright inattentive, which is why the Suns came very close to trading him before the February trade deadline. It might also make him the most likely player to be traded if the Suns do, indeed, dump some salary.

Suns GM Steve Kerr continues to insist that the Suns are about competing for a championship, and not just cutting salary this summer. He also told HOOPSWORLD he recognizes the team needs to make a tweak or two to improve their overall defense. Whatever happens with Shaq and Nash, it wouldn't surprise us to see Amar'e moved in an effort to acquire a player or two who can instill a defensive mindset. Clearly, they're not going to win a championship - or even make the playoffs - without defense.

I could live without Nash. I could live without Shaq. I could live without Nash AND Shaq. But loosing Amare' would just be too much. If we traded Stat we could not get a good deal/what he's worth to us because of his eye injury, his micro-fiber surgery, and his defensive liabilities. All offers for Amare that i've seen have come up short on what I'd be willing to take in return. This is going to be a CRAZY off season. Either we keep the team we have (with very very minor tweaking) and continue getting creamed by teams with good PG's or its a blow-up.

Well I'm to the point where I could careless if Kerr decides to ship Nash, Amare and Shaq's ass out of Phoenix. Those guys have huge egos and don't back up there words. Kerr should ship them out for some players who play defense and don't have huge egos.

@ mace - i dont mind his ego as long as he works hard. and whilst his defense is still poor, noone can deny the guy has a great work ethic.

so im cool with stat

that ego / fire to me is similar to guys like garnett, iverson, melo etc - just needs to be channelled correctly

@SDU - I agree with you that Amare he has a great work ethic. But in order for him to make the next step he needs to improve his defense. If he wants to be the best then he needs to prove it on both sides of the ball.

I also agree that he needs to have his energy/fire/ego channeled. I think we need someone like a Chauncey Billups because he has changed that Nuggets team around.

Amare and Nash are at the bottom of the list of guys I wanna see gone, but I wouldn't mind losing even them so long the Suns get the right pieces in exchange for a change.

All the main rotation players besides Hill suck at defense, the team obviously needs to balance out the roster if they wanna go back to making deep playoff runs, there's a reason the team went to shiyt as soon as Marion got traded.

J-Rich and Shaq should be on the block first tho.

Agreed. Same shiz different day with Amare. Every summer it's "I'm unstoppable, I'm awesome, I'm glorious, I'm the second coming"....it's getting a little tired now.

I'm OK with Nash going since he's not our future. Amare is, we need to bring in a leader that can turn around our team. I don't know how Billups did it. I have a feeling that Andre Miller or Hinrich could be the type of guy who could turn our team around defensively.

No way. Our defense has more holes than a wedge of swiss cheese. One person will not automatically make the rest of the team, better individual defenders. The other team will just abuse the other 4 players on the court. Andre Miller is certainly not a guy I'd consider to change games with his defense. Strong defense needs to be in the Back court AND the Front court. Amare needs to step up.

blow this team up, we need players that want to be in phoenix. i hate it to say, but when ama´re wants to leave let him walk. so is nash - if he doesn´t want to be here he should take his cheap ass and walk. he is one of the reasons we´ll never win a championship. no defense, terrible decision when it counts, alot of turnovers. and ama´re should shut his cheap mouth too and should take his time to learn some defense.
didn´t remind you this situation when nash left dallas?? the same procedure, again the money.

Props to the great one

From everything i seem to have heard and read is that he doesnt really have that great of a work ethic and if he does work hard its on the wrong things, like outside shooting and dribbling not defence or rebounding.

I am a fan of amare but after seeing him get outrebounded by nash in what 9 games? whilst we were over there i know its only a small section of games over a long season but if i had a good work ethic that would piss me off that a small PG has been beating me on the boards and would make me work on that part of my game.

This is probably the beginning of the end...I think we could have a shot with the current roster as long as we get a few defensive peices. I think we can keep and build around Amare, but we need to pair him with a defensive minded center like Camby or Chandler. (I would love to ship out Shaq in a package for either one.) We also need someone in the back court with a set of defensive chops. I am sorry, but our guard rotation of Nash, JRich, and Barbosa have to be the worse defensive unit in the league. I definately don't think we need to change our style, we just need a few defensive stoppers to make it a little harder on the other team.

He's right, nobody can stop Amare but himself. When he chooses to not box out, guard his man or go for rebounds he should be getting then it's his own damn fault. I wish he'd take some of his ego and place a little in his defensive side of his game.

--- +1. Stars need ego - some of them are just better at how they come off in the media. i think we all feel the same way about Stat, frustrated because no-one can deny his athletic ability or his work ethic. He's just never been moved to apply it to the defensive end. If he ever did, he would be the best big in the game. That's why it maddens us to see him play beneath his potential.
What happened to Shaq's Amare Project, anyway?
Shaq's the guy I could do without ever speaking tot he press again.
