Magic stun LeBron, Cavaliers 107-106
No longer untested, no longer unbeaten. The Cleveland Cavaliers finally met their match in the playoffs. Superman's team stopped them cold. Dwight Howard scored 30 points, Rashard Lewis added 22 and the Orlando Magic rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to hand LeBron James and the Cavaliers their first loss of the postseason, 107-106 on Wednesday night in the Eastern Conference finals opener. James finished with 49 points, eight assists and six rebounds, but he walked off the floor with a slight limp after Cleveland's stunning loss -- just its third in 46 home games. “Nobody said it was going to be easy,” said Cavs guard Delonte West, who missed an open 3-pointer with five seconds remaining. “This one hurts.” Lewis made a 3-pointer with 14.7 seconds left and the Magic, who dethroned the champion Boston Celtics in the previous round, survived two shots by Cleveland in the final seconds. Mo Williams missed a catch-and-shoot jumper off a jump ball as the horn sounded and the Cavs fell to 8-1 in the postseason. "It's a big victory," said Howard, who broke one of the shot clocks with a dunk in the opening minutes. "We kept fighting the whole game. We kept believing we could win."

Game 2 is Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena, which fell eerily silent after the Magic's win. As fans headed to the exits, they turned to observe James still on the floor and bent over in obvious pain. He seemed to be bothered by cramps in the fourth quarter and was tended to by Cleveland's training staff before slowly making his way to the locker room. Cleveland, coming off its second extended layoff of the playoffs after sweeping Atlanta, lost its grip on the game with a stagnant third quarter that carried into the fourth. Orlando, which went 2-1 vs. Cleveland in the regular season, took its first lead at 85-84 with 10:06 left when Anthony Johnson hit a 3-pointer from the left corner. The bucket seemed to suck the air out of the raucous building and Cavs coach Mike Brown quickly called a timeout to stop the Magic's run and get James back in. The Magic, though, kept making big shots with Lewis hitting a jumper with 31.6 seconds left to give Orlando a 104-103 lead. James then drove and scored on a runner while drawing a sixth foul on Howard, who added 13 rebounds. James completed the three-point play for a 106-104 lead but Lewis came down and buried his 3-pointer over a closing Anderson Varejao. "You got to play 48 minutes," Lewis said. "The most important thing is to play 48 minutes. We played only one half but it was the second half."

On Cleveland's last possession, Delonte West missed an open 3 but the Cavs were able to force a jump ball. James tipped it behind him to Williams, but his last-second prayer hit the back of the rim. Williams ended the first half by swishing a 67-footer to give the Cavaliers a 63-48 lead. Taking the inbounds pass with 1.7 seconds left, Williams dribbled once and sent a high-arching shot like the ones he and the Cavs' shooters work on at practice toward the basket. When it splashed through, James raised his arms and then wrapped Williams in a bear hug. It was the third consecutive Game 1 in these playoffs that the Cavs have closed the first half with a buzzer-beating bucket. James did it against the Pistons and the Hawks. Leading by 15, the Cavs got complacent and lost their offensive rhythm in the third quarter. They stood around either waiting for James to do something or settled for jump shots that didn't fall.Orlando seized the chance to get back in it and with Courtney Lee and Mickael Pietrus hitting 3-pointers, the Magic outscored the Cavaliers, 30-19, in the period to pull within 82-78 entering the fourth. James followed every detail of the game-day ritual he has followed religiously since his rookie season: shootaround, nap, early workout. He was already on the floor at Quicken Loans Arena at 5:15 p.m. -- more than three hours before tip-off -- launching jumpers. "It feel like it's basketball again," he said before the game. "I'm excited."

Clippers conflicted over having top draft pick
The Clippers brass said all the appropriate things after winning the draft lottery Tuesday. Of course they're thrilled. Of course they're going to take Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin. Not even the Clippers can mess up such a can't-miss scenario, right? But I bet if you gave general manager and coach Mike Dunleavy truth serum, he'd tell you it might have been easier had they gotten the second pick. That way, they could take the player they probably have a greater need for -- Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio -- without all the attending pressure of having the No. 1 pick. Leave it to the Clippers to be conflicted by the No. 1 pick.

Griffin is a power forward, and Los Angeles currently is paying power forward Zach Randolph $33.3 million through 2011. Center Chris Kaman is on the books for $34 million through 2012, and Marcus Camby has one year left at $7.6 million. Meanwhile, in the backcourt sits the $60 million white elephant known as Baron Davis, whose return to Los Angeles was an unmitigated disaster. The Clippers wouldn't have minded sending Davis back to Golden State (which reportedly is eager to have him back) and pairing Rubio with Eric Gordon. That said, Griffin is a franchise-altering talent, and those don't come around often.

The Clippers have to focus on moving the talented but troubled Randolph. No way does Dunleavy want to risk tainting Griffin with any of Randolph's bad habits. Plus, because the two play a similar style, they wouldn't mesh well. The problem is, the Clippers aren't going to have much leverage. Randolph's checkered past and huge contract makes him tough to trade. Then you figure, every other team knows you are desperate to move him, so it's going to be almost impossible.

Money matters
If you are the Rockets, how much money and how many years do you give pending free agent Ron Artest ?

Too little, and he leaves. Too much, and you run the risk of him getting complacent and becoming a distraction.

Tough call.

Loved the upfront way Steve Nash and agent Bill Duffy are dealing with the Suns.

Nash, 35, is entering the final year of his contract and through Duffy, told the Suns he will give them time to formulate a tangible plan for reshaping the roster before he considers an extension.

"This is kind of a perplexing time because he (Nash) absolutely wants to win and he loves the (Phoenix) market but all the pieces have to line up properly," Duffy told the Arizona Republic.

Give him a shot
The Kings reportedly have interviewed Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis and Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau for their coaching vacancy.

If they don't interview Pistons assistant Dave Cowens , they're making a mistake.Cowens, whose coaching resume dates to the late 1970s when he was a player-coach for the Celtics, never has been more ready to lead a team. He has learned from his success (winning 60 percent of his games with the Charlotte Hornets) and failures (Golden State disaster in 2001-03), and from his time with Flip Saunders .

He deserves another shot.

Latrell Sprewell's father one of two motorcyclists killed in separate crashes
Two motorcyclists killed in separate crashes in Milwaukee were identified Wednesday as Latoska R. Fields, 62, and Angel Malpica, 28. Fields is the father of Milwaukee-area resident and former NBA player Latrell Sprewell. According to a medical examiner's report, Fields was northbound on N. Granville Road near W. Darnel Ave. about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday when a southbound Chevrolet Suburban turned left in front of Fields' motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the SUV.

Fields, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, the report says. Milwaukee police are investigating possible charges against the SUV's driver, according to Capt. Anthony Hendricks. Fields' daughter, Poinciana Sprewell, said he had five children. "He loved his motorcycle, and he took pride in it, and he was very careful in riding his bike," she said. "He was very loving and kind, and he will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family."

Malpica, who also died Tuesday, was headed west on W. Mitchell St. about 4 p.m. on a motorcycle that struck a Chevrolet minivan northbound on S. 17th St. that pulled into his path.Malpica, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead a short time later. No one answered a call Wednesday to a number listed to his family.

SI mock draft: Pistons select B.J. Mullens
When all the NBA lottery teams have made their first round selections, the Pistons will be on the clock.

Ian Thompson of SI.com has Detroit taking center B.J. Mullens (Ohio State) with the 15th overall pick. "It's going to take a few years, but Mullens has the size and soft hands to develop into a legit center. He'll be a wise investment for a team that is turning over its frontcourt," Thompson wrote.

Thompson projects the top three picks to be: 1. Los Angeles Clippers -- Blake Griffin (Oklahoma); 2. Memphis Grizzlies -- Ricky Rubio (DKV Joventut - Spain); 3. Oklahoma City Thunder -- James Harden (Arizona State).

Even with 15th draft pick, point guard is an option for Pistons
One of the more interesting points from Joe Dumars' season-ending news conference was the evaluation that Rodney Stuckey is not a true point guard. "Playing the point can take your aggression away because you're worried about the other four guys," the Pistons president of basketball operations said. "What this year confirmed is he's a combo guard. We have to play him on the ball and off the ball."

After Tuesday night's NBA draft lottery, it appears the Pistons will have many options if they decide to select a point guard with the 15th pick June 25. Virginia Commonwealth's Eric Maynor, Syracuse's Jonny Flynn and North Carolina's Ty Lawson could be available after top prospects Ricky Rubio of Spain and Brandon Jennings, who played overseas this season, likely are picked before the Pistons' turn.

Maynor is 6-feet-3 and 180 pounds -- good size for a point guard. He was the best player at VCU all four of his seasons and a clutch performer. But there are questions about the competition he played against in the mid-major Colonial Athletic Association. Flynn, a good athlete, helped himself with a solid postseason. But at 5-10, he is undersized and will have to learn how to play man-to-man defense coming from Syracuse's legendary zone scheme.Lawson proved he was more valuable to the Tar Heels than Tyler Hansbrough this season as North Carolina looked vulnerable when he missed time with an injury. With Lawson, the Heels were a juggernaut and won the national title. Lawson is great in transition, but undersized at 5-11.

LeBron James fell one point shy of 50 and that was the difference in Cleveland's 107-106 loss to the Magic in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. James' 49 points were the third-most in NBA history in a playoff game decided by one point. Bob Pettit scored 50 in a 110-109 win over the Celtics in Game 6 of the 1958 Finals, a victory that gave the St. Louis Hawks the league championship. Ray Allen dropped 51 on the Bulls earlier in this year's playoffs, but Chicago won in triple-OT, 128-127.

LeBron, Kobe May Return to Team USA
LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and the core of the Olympic basketball champions could be back in USA uniforms next summer for the world championships.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo met with half of the team during the NBA All-Star break and said it's a ''distinct possibility'' that some of the gold medalists will play in Turkey in 2010.

During the meeting, which also included Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Chris Bosh, Colangelo said he wanted only a two-year commitment this time, with those years being 2010 and 2012. If the Americans win the world championships, they would automatically qualify for the London games and not have to play in '11.

Doc Rivers: C's Need Another Veteran
The salary cap is about to shrink, dropping from $72 million to approximately $69 million for next season. This isn’t good news for teams that plan to be active on the free agent market. But after watching injuries whittle his bench depth down to a twig, (Doc) Rivers wants help before another game is played.

“We have to add someone this summer if we want to win it (again),” he said. “We have to add shooting, and Paul (Pierce) needs a solid backup, which would help Paul drastically.

“One thing we have to absolutely add is a veteran. One thing that happened (following Kevin Garnett’s injury) was that we got young quickly. Bringing in another veteran, having him in the locker room, helps all the young guys.

Bulls Name Gar Forman New GM
In a move that had been expected since the All-Star break, the Bulls on Wednesday announced the promotion of Gar Forman to general manager. The team scheduled a news conference for this morning to explain the new structure of the front office.

John Paxson will remain with the organization and retain his title of executive vice president of basketball operations, a position he has held since April 2003.

Paxson still will be involved in all basketball decisions and will have the final say on all major personnel matters.

Wes Matthews, Others Work Out for Bucks
(Wes) Matthews and (Dominic) James took part in a lively session witnessed by Bucks coach Scott Skiles and other team officials. Also in the group were Missouri forward DeMarre Carroll, Louisiana State forward Tasmin Mitchell, Alabama-Birmingham shooting guard Robert Vaden and Illinois-Chicago point guard Josh Mayo.

Vaden got the attention of pro scouts with his performance in the Orlando predraft camp last year, and the 24-year-old displayed an impressive perimeter shot in the three-on-three portion of the workout Wednesday.

When the session finished, the 6-foot-5 Matthews was shaking his head a bit and saying this was his worst performance thus far in his four workouts for NBA teams.
