Any chance Rubio withdraws from draft or pulls a Vazquez?

Post#1 » by GrizzledGrizzFan » Wed May 20, 2009 2:40 am

Is Rubio committed to playing in the NBA - even if it means - gulp - coming to Memphis?

What's his relationship with Marc?

Any chance he get's JCN to pal along? (just kidding - I realize he has it waaaay too good at home)

I'm really warming up to the idea of him wearing Beale St Blue and playing next to Mayo.

You guys have so many weapons on your team, I think Rubio wouldn't mind dribbling up the court with Mayo on his right, Gay on his left, and Gasol down the middle to throw the ball to.

Don't forget the Grizz's devastating combo of "Cap Space and Flex I Bility"!

In all seriousness, with upcoming cap space, Darko's expiring, Buckner's $2 million buyout, #27 pick this season and Lakers #1 next season, the Grizz have serious pieces accumulated to make some major noise this off season.

I think you guys are better off trading for Stoudemire than keeping Rubio.

Mayo and Gay already dominant the ball. Just imagine having to add Rubio to that equation.

Rubio doesn't have to dominate the ball at all to make an impact on the game; Conley does. This is half of the logic behind Memphis taking Rubio at 2, the other half being Rubio's star potential.

add some space for his defense too. The guy is the leader in steals of both ACB and Euroleague since he was 17yo

While Oklahoma City would obviously be extremely interested in the prospect of acquiring the top pick and drafting local product Blake Griffin, there is one team standing in their way – the Memphis Grizzlies, who own the #2 pick. From what people around the league are saying, Rubio’s camp may already be sending out feelers indicating that he’s not interested in the least bit in playing in Memphis.

“Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so. Fegan [Rubio’s agent] wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City. “

Unlike Griffin or Hasheem Thabeet, who don’t really have any choice where they will play next season if a team decides to play hardball, Rubio has a reasonably attractive alternative option at his disposal—returning to Spain.

“He’ll pull out if he doesn’t like what he’s hearing,” the NBA source tells us. “Or he can stay in and force the Grizzlies to call his bluff—would they really take him knowing that he may never come over? That’s one way to get him to fall to three.”

Fegan is already highly experienced in these matters, having unsuccessfully attempted to navigate fellow client Yi Jianlian towards the team of his choice in the 2007 draft, only to see Milwaukee foil his plans and pick him anyway. This time, though, he has a lot more leverage, as Rubio would likely have no problem staying in Badalona for another year or two or more if push came to shove. His buyout after all, is yet to be resolved, which in this case may actually be an advantage.

Given how weak this draft supposedly is I still see no reason why the Grizzlies shouldn't draft Rubio. At the very least he's an extremely valuable trade chip.

That doesn't sound good at all, although, at least it doesn't have any quotes from Rubio or Fegan saying that Rubio doesn't want to come here, it's only from an NBA "source."

Yeah, I say draft him anyways. If he or his idiot agent doesn't want to come to Memphis, he can rot in Spain for all I care.

Can't say if the rumor is true or not. If it's false, Rubio will be a Grizz come draft night. If it's true, the Grizz need to look into trading the pick to net a reliable player(s) back to better the team.

If the rumor is true and Rubio will only play in LA or Sacramento (meaning he will stay in Spain if drafted by Memphis or OKC), how about #4/#23/Kenny Thomas (expiring) for #2/Jaric? You only move down two spots, get an extra pick and an expiring for Jaric/Rubio. Thoughts?

Even if he chooses to stay in Spain, Grizz should still draft him. He will be a star, it is worth having his NBA rights. And this way you can hold off on trading Conley until his value goes up even more.

Ricky Rubio, Rudy Gay and Darko Milcic for Blake Griffin, Marcus Camby and a future first round pick.

There's no way the Clippers give up Griffin or Gordon. Any other piece on the team is in play here.

How about Camby, Thornton, a future 1st, and the 1st the Wolves owe us for the 2nd pick, Jaric, and Buckner. You get an expiring contract in Camby, a first team all rookie from two years ago, two future 1st's, and save about 10 million. You guys could then choose to ship Gay in a deal for Amare since you have another SF in Thornton.

Return to Memphis Grizzlies
