Last week, the 6-foot-3 Curry hired agent Jeff Austin, who represented his father, Dell Curry. Austin had a strong conversation with Knicks team president Donnie Walsh last week about Curry.

Austin said he will schedule workouts for Curry with lottery teams between 5 and 14, and has fielded several calls. Curry, the nation's leading scorer, is working out at in Washington, D.C.

Also on their radar are point guards, Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday, Jonny Flynn, Brandon Jennings, Tyson Law and USC shooting guard DeMar DeRozan.

They somehow need to get better, of course. Even with Kevin Garnett presumably about to resolve his right knee issues with surgery, Rivers said the team must add at least one other veteran to bolster the Aging Three.

He doesn’t want to ever again have the feeling he had this spring -- the insecurity of heading into the playoffs without his best team.

“We clearly have to add to our team,” he said. “One regret -- the one thing I look back on this year, though you obviously can’t predict injuries -- is that our real team has still not been beaten. “It bothers me, because now I don’t know if we were good enough or not,” said Rivers. “That’s the only thing -- not knowing -- but I loved our team. “But every team we competed against this year -- the ones at the top -- added to their team, and we didn’t.”

The salary cap is about to shrink, dropping from $72 million to approximately $69 million for next season. This isn’t good news for teams that plan to be active on the free agent market. But after watching injuries whittle his bench depth down to a twig, Rivers wants help before another game is played.

“We have to add someone this summer if we want to win it (again),” he said. “We have to add shooting, and Paul (Pierce) needs a solid backup, which would help Paul drastically.“One thing we have to absolutely add is a veteran. One thing that happened (following Garnett’s injury) was that we got young quickly. Bringing in another veteran, having him in the locker room, helps all the young guys

“(Glen Davis), Leon (Powe), (Kendrick Perkins [stats]) and Rajon (Rondo) are all still very young. Losing P.J. (Brown), (James) Posey and Sam (Cassell from the 2007-08 championship team) took away something like 35 or 40 years of experience, and we got back zero.”

Matthews already has worked out for Portland and Washington, and he took part in a Houston-based session held for seven teams, among them the Rockets, Miami, Minnesota, Boston and San Antonio.

He will go to Detroit to work out for the Pistons on Friday and also has workouts scheduled in Atlanta and Memphis in early June.

Mavs Work Out Foreign, American PGs
On Wednesday, the Mavericks worked out Rodrigue Beaubois, a 6-1 point guard who has played the last three seasons for Cholet in the French league. Beaubois, 21, said Parker's success is helping players like himself. "When I was younger, I tried to watch his game because he was the first player from France to really make it in the NBA," Beaubois said. "It's the NBA. And if you're a basketball player in France, he showed us that you can go to the NBA, too. It's a door that he opened."

Beaubois is considered a late first- or second-round selection for the June 25 draft. After working out for the Mavericks, he's headed to Miami for a session with the Heat, then Phoenix. After that, he'll visit other teams, although a schedule has not been set. Like most draftees, Beaubois will go to Chicago next Thursday and Friday for the NBA draft combine.

Plethora of point guards: The Mavericks brought in an abundance of point guards for workouts Wednesday, including St. Mary's College's Patrick Mills, UCLA's Darren Collison and Baylor's Curtis Jerrells. They were joined by big men Chinemelu Elonu of Texas A&M and Vladimir Dasic of Serbia. It's not unusual for a team to bring in several players at the same position to get a better feel for how they rate against similar competition.

Could Mavs, Thunder Make Deal With Clips?
There will be no shortage of competition, however, particularly from Oklahoma City, which has the third pick in the draft. The Thunder is expected to make a play for Griffin, using the third pick and one of their young core players (Jeff Green or Russell Westbrook) as bait for the top overall pick, which would allow them to keep Griffin in his hometown.

That would be a huge move in terms of local interest and, by extension, ticket sales. The Mavericks have to take a proactive approach on this. The Clippers were trying to dump salary all last season. They have a nice core with Al Thornton, their big guys, Davis and Eric Gordon. Pairing Griffin with that group should make the Clippers playoff worthy.

But if they can pare some of that salary, presumably Davis and/or one of their big men, the Mavericks have to be ready to move, something they’ve never been shy about in the past.

There is some good news on the injury front, as center Andrew Bogut, who missed much of the season with a back injury, has been cleared to return to basketball.

"We were confident he would be back and 100% healthy for next season, and that's the case now," says Hammond. "His injury was diagnosed as a bone fracture, and while we didn't want to sound overconfident, we were a little reassured when they started talking about discs that were probably going to translate into surgery. It's somewhat similar to having the doctor say you broke a bone in your leg or your hand, it's going to heal, and the same thing's true with the back. Bones do heal, and that was the case with Andrew. We expected him to be ready to go 100%, this was the timetable we were working under, and we're just happy to see that come to fruition."

Magic Stun Cavaliers in Game 1
The top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers got tested for the first time in these playoffs. And they failed that test, losing the home-court advantage that they worked all season to get. They looked stunned after the final buzzer of a 107-106 loss. After sweeping easily through the first two rounds -- winning all eight games by 10 points or more -- the Cavs discovered Wednesday that it's a different game against the really good teams.

As great as he is, LeBron James -- the NBA's MVP -- can't do it all by himself, which should have been a concern before this Eastern Conference final began. James was superb with 49 points, but he let someone else (Delonte West) take the final shot, and that was a huge mistake. No one else was ready. The Magic, relying on a Big Three of Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu, used their better balance and some clutch shooting down the stretch when the pressure mounted.

Lewis and Turkoglu, who were sluggish and passive in the first half, combined to score the last 17 points for the Magic down the stretch. The Magic trailed by 15 at intermission, but they slowly fought back into the game, wearing out James in the fourth. "I don't have a clue how to handle LeBron," said Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy. "But we're a resilient team, and we'll keep fighting." Lewis hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining, launching it over the outstretched arm of Anderson Varejao. James had a final chance with the ball, but after taking it into traffic, the ball was shot and missed by West in the corner. The Magic had no answer for James, but the Cavs didn't know what to do either with Howard, who had 30 points and 13 rebounds.

How much fuel in Kobe's tank? 'Wearing down' not an issue
The Los Angeles Lakers camp conceded Wednesday that more was asked of Bryant in edging the Denver Nuggets 105-103 to open the Western Conference finals than would be preferred.

Bryant played 43 minutes Tuesday, seven more than his season average.

The Lakers needed every one of his 40 points, including 18 in their fourth-quarter comeback.

U.S. Stars Back for World Championships?
LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and the core of the Olympic basketball champions could be back in USA uniforms next summer for the world championships.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo met with half the team during the NBA All-Star break and said it's a "distinct possibility" that some of the gold medalists will play in Turkey in 2010.

During the meeting, which also included Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Chris Bosh, Colangelo said he wanted only a two-year commitment this time, with those years being 2010 and 2012. If the Americans win the world championships, they would automatically qualify for the London games and not have to play in '11.

Still Searching
Editor’s note: Pistons.com looks back at the 2008-09 Detroit Pistons season with a month-by-month review, starting with training camp and concluding with the Eastern Conference playoffs. Part IV: January. The Pistons knew they weren’t going to have Rip Hamilton or Rasheed Wallace anytime soon when they beat Sacramento to open 2009 at The Palace – a night Rodney Stuckey, 10 days after scoring a career-high 40, came back with 38 more – and they didn’t expect Antonio McDyess back, either, as they took off for a four-game Western Conference road swing facing a critical numbers shortage. They found an opponent even more depleted than them when they got to Los Angeles to take on the Clippers. The Clips went into that Jan. 4 matinee without their two double-double threats up front, Zach Randolph and Chris Kaman, as well as their top three point guards. Baron Davis, their major off-season acquisition, was out, as was his backup, Jason Hart, and his backup, Mike Taylor. That left the Clippers to plug in recent pickup Fred Jones, a veteran shooting guard, at the point. And less than three minutes into the game, Jones, too, was lost to injury. But with journeyman swingman Mardy Collins running the point, the Clippers made the Pistons sweat. Groping for points with a starting frontcourt that included Kwame Brown and Amir Johnson and seeing Allen Iverson struggle with his shot, the Pistons never got any breathing room. And when LA rookie Eric Gordon became unguardable in the fourth quarter – he would finish with 31 points, making all 12 of his free throws – it came down to Iverson trying to win it one-on-one, the Pistons exploiting the unique skill set that had made him one of the game’s elite scorers for more than a decade. We’ll never know if Iverson’s game-winning attempt would have gone in or not – Al Thornton swatted it away as it began its downward descent. The Pistons wound up winning on a goaltending call. “You know you’re having a bad shooting game when you hit the game winner and that doesn’t even go in,” Iverson said. “That’s the top – the worst shooting game that I’ve ever had in my career.”

He finished 7 of 22, but the Pistons had their seventh straight win and sat a season’s high 10 games over .500 at 21-11. They would take a step back at Portland in their next game – on a night Iverson’s potential game-winner missed – before heading into Denver and a charged meeting with Chauncey Billups and the Nuggets. Billups had 20 points by halftime and the 25-12 Nuggets, delighted with their end of the November trade, led by double digits most of the half and by 10 at the break. But Iverson was outstanding in the second half, finishing with 23 points and leading a fourth-quarter charge that carried the Pistons to a 93-90 win. Denver didn’t have Carmelo Anthony that night, but the Pistons were still playing without Hamilton and Wallace. It was a big win and the Pistons felt pretty good about themselves as they headed to Utah for the last game of the trip. They got Rasheed Wallace back in time for that game, though he was clearly subpar. The beleaguered Pistons, 24 hours after their emotional win in Denver, dug a huge early hole at nemesis Utah the next night, losing their eighth straight game to the Jazz. But they were heading home, Wallace had gotten his feet wet in Utah and Hamilton – who had missed the past eight games – was cleared to play for the next game. Things were looking up. Things were about to unravel. The Pistons came home to blow another fourth-quarter lead and lose at the buzzer on a jumper by Charlotte’s Raymond Felton. Later that week, they lost two more games to sub.-500 teams at Indiana and Oklahoma City, and the losing streak went to five on a Saturday night at The Palace when Chris Paul’s 23-point, 14-assist performance powered a New Orleans win. “Any time you’re losing games, your confidence may get shaken a little bit,” Curry said. “But I’ve been telling you all year – this is a different team. It’s a team that had played together so long and had a 10-year-plus vet running the team. No excuses for us, but this group has to learn its way as well. Stuckey has to learn his way. He has to get us in things. We’re playing with other guys that are playing more major minutes that have never done it before. This is different.”

The tailspin cast doubts about whether the small-ball lineup could be effective. The Pistons were 0-4 since Hamilton returned, headed to Memphis for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee game. They would narrowly beat the 11-28 Grizzlies, but small ball died that day. Rip Hamilton – reigning three-time All-Star and the team’s leading scorer in each of his six seasons as a Piston – was coming off the bench. And everybody hung on what Hamilton’s reaction to the move would be. “It was something (Curry) wanted to do and I said fine, cool,” Hamilton said. “Bottom line, you want to win games and if that’s the best way that we can go out there and try to win a championship, I’m all for it.” The Pistons beat Toronto in a rout in Hamilton’s first game off the bench, outscoring the Raptors 49-33 in the second half. But they got pounded in a weekend set at The Palace, losing to Dallas by 21 and spotting Houston a 15-point lead before rallying to lose by three. Hamilton’s 27 off the bench against the Rockets was a bright spot, but the Pistons had lost five games to .500 in a little more than two weeks and couldn’t seem to sustain much in the way of progress at either end of the floor. After a narrow win at Minnesota, the Pistons closed out January with another loss to Boston, their third straight this season and fifth straight going back to last year’s playoffs. They were treading water, heading to February with a record of 25-20, and still clinging to the hope that with a little more familiarity between Iverson and his teammates, and with a little more time to let the Hamilton-as-super-sub experiment play out, the Pistons would gain enough steam over the second half of the season to hit the playoffs on a wave of momentum. That optimism was about to face a stern test.

Mock draft guesses at 15 are all over the map
In a draft with few sure things, opinions are going to vary wildly even on players who wind up going in the lottery. Outside the lottery – and the Pistons are sitting one slot outside of it, with the 15th pick in the June 25 draft – it really gets scrambled. How’s this for scrambled? In a random survey of 13 mock drafts, six different prospects were projected to go to the Pistons. James Johnson of Wake Forest and Terrence Williams of Louisville led the way with three votes apiece. Gonzaga’s Austin Daye, Virginia Commonwealth’s Eric Maynor and Ohio State’s B.J. Mullens had two votes each. And North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough had the other. We’re profiling 12 players who could fall within range of the 15th pick over the next month on Pistons.com. Hansbrough isn’t on the list. There are some who doubt he’ll work his way into the first round, never mind the lottery. Here are the 12: point guards Maynor, Stephen Curry, Jonny Flynn, Ty Lawson, Jeff Teague and Jrue Holiday; forwards DeJuan Blair, Johnson and Daye; shooting guards Williams and Gerald Henderson; and Mullens, a center. Opinions on these players are going to move around from week to week leading up to the draft – at least consensus media opinion, driven by whispers from front-office executives and information leaked by agents regarding workouts and rumors of promises made. Since Tuesday’s lottery, already that process has begun.

From various accounts, Daye and Holiday are moving up, Johnson down. Another name that’s emerging is Chase Budinger of Arizona, who spent three years in Tuscon and has been looked at as a potential star for his shooting and athleticism. Those are the things that stand out in workouts, so it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Budinger moved up into lottery range. A published report on Thursday had him already in to work out for the Pistons, who certainly could use a 3-point threat. Of the 12 we identified to profile, I’d rank them this way in terms of likelihood of being available to the Pistons – 1 meaning likeliest to be there, 12 not so much: 1-Teague; 2-Mullens; 3-Williams; 4-Henderson; 5-Johnson; 6-Maynor; 7-Lawson; 8-Daye; 9-Blair; 10-Flynn; 11-Holiday; 12-Curry. No fewer than six of those players should be there. I counted nine players as unlikely to be available – Blake Griffin, Ricky Rubio, Hasheem Thabeet, Jordan Hill, James Harden, DeMar DeRozan, Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings and Earl Clark. If I had to redo that list today, I’d swap out Clark for Curry and probably also put Holiday, at least, ahead of Clark, as well. So Clark could even be in play at 15 for the Pistons. By next week … who knows? Remember, individual workouts for teams only began in earnest this week. That’s a critical piece of the puzzle as teams put together their dossiers on prospects. It’s not just seeing how they shoot the ball, or if they can dribble with both hands, or how high they can jump, or how well they can stay in front of the comparable prospects brought in to work out against them, either.

It’s also standing beside them to gauge their true height. It’s looking them in the eyes to get a sense of their character. It’s getting a feel for how their personality would fit in your locker room. And if all of those things check out positively, then it’s conducting all the due diligence – talking to former college, high school and AAU coaches and, in some cases, hiring professional investigators to do top-to-bottom background checks. And going back over every piece of videotape to see if they play as hard and as well against top-flight competition as against overmatched opponents. And inside each team’s war room, debate will be waged and rankings on the big board and within each position group will change right up until David Stern calls the draft to order on June 25. So all those mock drafts put together this week are fun and they stir conversation and begin the familiarization process for fans, but they don’t mean much just yet. Except for Blake Griffin going No. 1.

Among the players who have reportedly worked out for the Pistons at The Palace practice facility this week in addition to Budinger – unconfirmed by the Pistons – are Louisville’s Terrence Williams, Temple’s Dionte Christmas, Marquette’s Jerel McNeal, Australian Joe Ingles, Gonzaga’s Jeremy Pargo and West Virginia’s Alex Ruoff. Williams and Budinger would be first-round targets; the rest, second-rounders.

Pistons' Richard Hamilton sues former business manager
Detroit Pistons star Richard Hamilton is accusing his former business manager of stealing about $1 million from him, according to a federal lawsuit filed in Pennsylvania.

The lawsuit was filed May 18 against Josh Nochimson, who is also at the center of recruiting allegations at the University of Connecticut, Hamilton's alma mater. Hamilton accuses Nochimson of using his credit card to purchase airline flights, game tickets and other items. Nochimson's attorney said he hasn't seen the lawsuit and could not comment.

Hamilton led the Huskies to a national title in 1999. Nochimson was a student manager for the team. Nochimson was accused earlier this year of providing improper gifts to entice a basketball recruit to sign with UConn.

Wittman, Cassell join Wizards staff under Saunders
New Washington Wizards coach Flip Saunders has chosen Randy Wittman and Sam Cassell to be on his staff.

Wittman and Cassell were announced Thursday as the replacements for Randy Ayers and Phil Hubbard, who were assistants under fired coach Eddie Jordan and interim coach Ed Tapscott. Wittman was the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves for nearly two years before he was fired in December 2008. He was also head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1999-2001 and has been an assistant with three other teams.

Cassell is taking his first coaching job after a 15-year NBA playing career. He won three titles -- two with Houston and one with Boston -- and played for Saunders on the Timberwolves team that went to the Western Conference finals in 2004.
