Pistons' Hamilton sues former business manager, friend
Detroit Pistons basketball star Richard Hamilton has filed a federal lawsuit accusing his former business manager, already at the center of recruiting allegations at the University of Connecticut, of stealing about $1 million from him. The lawsuit was filed Monday in U.S. District court in eastern Pennsylvania against 34-year-old Josh Nochimson of Glenview, Ill. It accuses Nochimson of using Hamilton's credit card to buy airline flights, game tickets and other items. It also accuses Nochimson of using 1.4 million of Hamilton's American Express frequent flyer miles; failing to pay back $80,000 lent to Nochimson to repair a Maryland house; improperly transferring at least $3,000 from Hamilton's bank accounts into Nochimson's private account; and writing about $112,000 in unauthorized checks from Hamilton's bank account. Hamilton is seeking more than $1 million in restitution, but his attorney, Alan Milstein, said the lawsuit is about more than that. “It's not like Mr. Hamilton is desperate for the money,” Milstein said. “Money isn't what's motivating him. It's more just a sense of betrayal and justice.”

Hamilton, who is from Coatesville, Pa., filed the action in Pennsylvania because he hired Nochimson there, Milstein said. Nochimson's attorney, Matthew Leitman, said he has not seen the lawsuit and could not comment on it. Hamilton and Nochimson met at UConn, where Hamilton led the Huskies to a national title in 1999. Nochimson was a student manager for the team. After Hamilton was drafted by the Washington Wizards in 1999, Nochimson tagged along, becoming his personal assistant. In exchange, Hamilton provided him a place to live, living expenses and experience that Nochimson hoped to use to begin a career in sports management, according to the lawsuit. Hamilton later agreed to pay Nochimson $25,000 a year, then raised that to $45,000 and finally $50,000, giving Nochimson the title of business manager. As part of that job, Nochimson had access to Hamilton's bank accounts and American Express card to pay Hamilton's bills, the lawsuit said.

Nochimson also ran Hamilton's basketball camps for poor children in Pennsylvania. “He was a friend, who Mr. Hamilton had placed a lot of trust in,” Milstein said. Hamilton alleges in the lawsuit that Nochimson began stealing from him in 2003, and ran up $85,000 in fraudulent charges between 2005 and 2008. Milstein said Nochimson is not accused of stealing money from the basketball camps. Nochimson was accused earlier this year of improperly helping guide basketball recruit Nate Miles to Connecticut by giving him lodging, transportation, meals and representation. The school and the NCAA are investigating those allegations. Milstein said he doesn't know if Nochimson used Hamilton's credit card to pay for any of those expenses. “That really doesn't play into this (lawsuit) at all,” he said. He said the credit card bills show “dinners, everything you would see on a normal American Express bill, but there was a lot of travel on there, obviously.” Milstein said Nochimson has told Hamilton that the allegations are true, but also has indicated he is broke.

Forman wants to re-sign Gordon
Chicago Bulls general manager Gar Forman says re-signing high-scoring guard Ben Gordon is his top priority heading into the offseason. Forman said he believes Gordon wants to stay in Chicago but that there's still a lot of work to do before that happens.

Gordon, who becomes a free agent on July 1, played a key role in the Bulls' impressive bid to defeat defending champion Boston in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The Celtics won the series in seven games.

Forman replaced John Paxson, who will remain with the Bulls as executive vice president of basketball operations. Forman is in charge of day-to-day basketball decisions, while Paxson will deal mostly with long-term organizational planning and talent evaluation.

Cassell, Wittman hired by Wizards
New Washington Wizards coach Flip Saunders has chosen Randy Wittman and Sam Cassell to be on his staff.

Wittman and Cassell were announced Thursday as the replacements for Randy Ayers and Phil Hubbard, who were assistants under fired coach Eddie Jordan and interim coach Ed Tapscott. Wittman was the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves for nearly two years before he was fired in December 2008. He was also head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1999-2001 and has been an assistant with three other teams.

Cassell is taking his first coaching job after a 15-year NBA playing career. He won three titles -- two with Houston and one with Boston -- and played for Saunders on the Timberwolves team that went to the Western Conference finals in 2004.

Howard slam knocks loose clock
Superman did some major damage. Orlando center Dwight Howard knocked down the 24-second shot clock above the basket with a ferocious dunk the first time he touched the ball in Wednesday night's Eastern Conference final against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After grabbing a rebound, Howard went up underneath and slammed the ball through with both hands and pulled on the rim for Orlando's first basket. The 24-second stanchion, a 5-foot-tall appendage that has cameras mounted to its top, then fell slowly backward. A maintenance crew came out with ladders but couldn't fix the clock. The shot clock at the opposite end was turned off and two portable units were placed on both baselines. A tape measure was then brought out to check if Howard had pulled the rim lower than its required 10 feet.

Play was stopped for eight minutes. The clock that Howard dropped was fixed at halftime and the teams began the second half with both units functioning.

Martin, who suffered a fractured left ring finger during Game 1, is expected to play when the series resumes Thursday night.

Smith sprained his right knee in the game, but he said it was better Wednesday. "I'm definitely going to play," he said. "I'll be ready for tomorrow."

Carlos Boozer is expected to opt out of Utah Jazz contract
No decisions have been made, but all indications are that Boozer will opt out of the final year of his contract with the Jazz and become a free agent, with Boozer and Pelinka possibly waiting until the June 30 deadline to officially do so.

Boozer would be opting out of $12.7 million he is set to make in 2009-10, but is said to want the security of a long-term deal. He also is believed to have received assurances from Jazz CEO Greg Miller that the team wants him back in Utah.

Even amid a recession, Boozer would be banking on interest from other teams as arguably the headliner of a 2009 free-agent class that will include Allen Iverson, Shawn Marion, Lamar Odom and Ron Artest. Although there are a handful of teams with the salary-cap space to sign him outright -- Detroit, Memphis and Oklahoma City -- Boozer could draw interest from other teams in sign-and-trade possibilities with the Jazz.

Mehmet Okur's opt-out decision, meanwhile, likely will depend on how he views the 2010 free-agent summer.

Not only could the NBA's salary-cap and luxury-tax numbers continue to decline with the economy, Okur might be in less demand in a class that could include LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and a host of perennial All-Stars.

Nuggets' Kenyon Martin has a broken finger on left hand
The spirit of the Denver Nuggets is not broken. But their power forward's finger is. What was originally diagnosed as a contusion to the left, non-shooting, ring finger of Kenyon Martin turned out to be a fracture. A Nuggets spokesman said Wednesday that Martin would play tonight in Game 2 of the Lakers-Nuggets series and probably would tape the finger to stabilize it.

The availability of Nuggets backup guard J.R. Smith is less certain. He tried to follow his missed free throw at the end of Tuesday's 105-103 loss to the Lakers, was knocked to the ground, and was writhing in pain, clutching his lower right leg as the clock expired.

The Nuggets were relieved to learn that Smith's injury was just a calf strain and not something more severe. While his teammates had a casual shoot-around at the Clippers' practice facility Wednesday, Smith was running in the therapeutic pool.

Ainge: We never question KG
Kevin Garnett held out hope. The Boston Celtics front office held out hope. Even though the probability of playing seemed unlikely, a chance is still a chance. And for that, Celtics president Danny Ainge has no regrets on leaving the possibility of Garnett’s return open.

“There was some question if KG would be able to play at some point in the playoffs, and we had hope. And we still had hope for that, and it just didn’t turn out that way. But one thing that we can’t do, and one thing that we don’t do internally, is never question Kevin Garnett,” he told WEEI’s The Big Show. “I mean, Kevin Garnett for 12 years has never given anybody any reason to think he would not play if he could. The guy just doesn’t miss games. “But the reality of it is, is there was still hope.

I think there was a bit of hope in Kevin’s mind, there was hope in our minds, there was hope in Doc’s mind even though we knew that the possibility, that the stronger possibility existed that he probably wouldn’t play, there was a little bit of hope that he might be able to at some point. So I think second-guessing doesn’t do any good. It didn’t turn out, he wasn’t able to play, and we don’t really think that we’ve set ourselves that far back.”

One league source on Wednesday even indicated the seemingly unthinkable, that the Clippers would be willing to trade the top pick – which they have already confirmed would be Griffin – for the right package.

Cats have no choice but to wait for Wise to make his decision
For every good sign Sean Miller receives about Nic Wise, there's a bad one. And the UA basketball coach probably won't know the sum total until mid-June.

While Wise is taking an online summer course and keeping his UA eligibility intact, he is also sitting on an invitation to try out for USA Basketball's college-players-only World University Games team.

Miller said he figures Wise will probably go to the June 15 deadline before deciding whether to withdraw from the NBA draft, having already begun working out for NBA teams. Wise has based himself in his Houston hometown, with workouts expected to include the Spurs and Rockets — but not the Suns. Wise has not been available for comment but Miller said he hopes Wise will make the best decision for him and his family. "Certainly, we would welcome him back with open arms," Miller said. "But we completely trust him and know he will do what's best for him in this situation."

Budinger on move
Former UA wing Chase Budinger will work out today for Indiana, which holds the 13th pick in the draft after Tuesday's lottery. He already visited Detroit (pick No. 15) on Tuesday and has upcoming workouts scheduled for Sunday at Phoenix (14) and Monday at Chicago (16).

While Budinger will participate in skills testing at the combine, the agent for both former UA players, Kevin Bradbury, said Wednesday that Hill would only take part in measurements. Hill is projected as a top-10 pick, and Bradbury said Hill would probably only work out for three or four teams near the top of the draft lottery.

Budinger is projected as a mid-to-late first-round pick, slightly higher than he was projected last year, when he withdrew from the draft and returned to Arizona.

Looking for work
Derrick Coleman wants to return to the Pistons as a coach.

Coleman, who played in the NBA from 1990-2005, would like to teach big men how to play inside, and hopes president Joe Dumars gives him a call. "It is like a lost art," he said. "There are a lot of bigs, but nobody posts anybody up. Everybody wants to stand still and hit jumpers. "Tell Joe I am here. I am local. I love the game of basketball and want to get involved."

Former Michigan star Terry Mills also is shopping his resume, hoping for a college job.

Bosh won't be traded without the Raptors getting some true assets in return. Though if he goes, it will be hard to make happy faces around the idea the club will have lost arguably the best player in their history just as he's entering his prime.

No wonder the Raptors, according to team sources, are actually looking hard at buying a second pick even if this year's draft is more about role players than star power.
