Ben (Sydney, Australia): What do you think about trading Hamilton and Amir to Toronto for Bosh, then signing Ben Gordon and drafting DeJuan Blair?

Langlois: Bosh and Gordon would dramatically alter the look, Ben. Both are young players capable of consistently putting up 20 points. If you add two pieces like that to go with Rodney Stuckey, that’s a very nice foundation. Will Blair be around at 15? I’d probably guess no at this point, but it’s very much in question. If he is, there is no question he would draw consideration. I see lots of traditional Pistons qualities in him. But there will be other players the Pistons might find even more intriguing. And if their free-agent plans include Carlos Boozer, they might decide Blair isn’t necessarily the best way to complement Boozer.

Ron (Wayne, Mich.): I saw a report on the Raptors where Bryan Colangelo said they would be interested in acquiring an extra first-round pick if someone they liked were still on the board. Could this be the Pistons’ chance to pull off a draft-day deal for Bosh? The Raptors are projected at nine, so 15 sounds like a spot they would covet after their first pick.

Langlois: Without knowing the context of his remarks, I wouldn’t make too much of it. Every GM in the league would say he’d be interested in acquiring an extra first-round pick – if the price were right. But it’s certainly possible that Colangelo will be shopping Bosh as the draft approaches and the ability to sweeten the pot with a first-rounder might be the tipping point in a trade for him. From the Pistons’ perspective, it would more than likely be a trade that might be consummated on draft day but not officially transacted until a few weeks later – unless the Pistons were actually trading away more in salary than they would be taking on. (Unlikely.) That’s because the Pistons would be best served by signing free agents first and then swinging their trades; that allows them to make maximum use of their cap space.

Joe (Oakville, Conn.): Would it be possible to trade for both Bosh and Okafor without trading the core of Stuckey, Hamilton and Prince?

Langlois: Not without automatic weapons being involved. Who exactly do you want to offer for Bosh if Stuckey, Hamilton and Prince are all off the table?

Dennis (Chevak, Alaska): Any chance Glen Davis will be looked at this summer?

Langlois: Davis definitely earned himself a nice chunk of change with the way he played in the absence of Kevin Garnett and Leon Powe. Hard to see Boston letting him get away – he’ll be a restricted free agent, so they can match any offer – given Garnett’s age (33) and likely knee surgery and Powe’s pending third ACL surgery.

Mario (Lansing, Michigan): With the financial situation in Milwaukee and the close relationship between the GMs, any chance of getting Richard Jefferson and Charlie Villanueva for a combination of Prince, a young big and draft picks? This seems to address the needs of both teams and really would give us two proven vets still in their prime.

Langlois: Let’s set aside for the moment the merits of Jefferson and Villanueva. (You’ll find a lot of lukewarm opinions on both, by the way.) John Hammond isn’t going to do the Pistons any favors just because of his relationship with Joe Dumars. If that were the case, he never would have traded Mo Williams to Cleveland last summer when the motivation was primarily salary-cap relief. If the Pistons are going to dangle Prince, I think the payoff will be something bigger.

Joshua (Ann Arbor, Mich.): I just saw the Nets might be interested in moving Yi Jianlian. I know he isn’t that good right now, but do you think they could get him pretty easily – maybe just for a few second-rounders? And do you think he’d be a good fit?

Langlois: I don’t know about fit because nobody really knows how this roster is going to come together, but I’m really skeptical that Yi can be anything more than what we’ve seen from him in his two seasons. There were major questions coming into the 2007 draft about Yi’s actual age. His birth year is officially listed as 1987 by the NBA, but if he’s really 25, as many suspect, than how much room for growth is there? He looks like a guy good enough to be on the fringe of the rotation for a decent team. If that’s worth a few second-rounders, OK – except as the No. 6 pick, if a team decides to pick up his fourth- and fifth-year options, he’d be due nearly $10 million over those two seasons. And that’s a high sticker price for marginal production.

Tavernari coming back to BYU
BYU forward Jonathan Tavernari has withdrawn his name from consideration for the NBA draft.

Tavernari did not hire an agent after declaring for the draft on April 22, so he can still return to BYU for his senior season. Tavernari said in a release Wednesday that he talked with his family and coaches and decided to complete school and play another year of college before going pro.

He averaged 15.7 points last season and led the Cougars, who lost to Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA tournament, with 85 3-pointers. Tavernari had until June 15 to withdraw his name. The draft is June 25.

LeBron, Cavs get first taste of playoff adversity
The 24-second shot clock has been fixed. The Cleveland Cavaliers are next on the repairs-to-do list. The Orlando Magic caused some extensive collateral damage with their stunning win in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. They exposed Cleveland's depth, shredded its defense, grabbed home-court advantage and put the NBA's top-seeded team in an unfamiliar position -- behind in a series and desperate for a win heading into Game 2 on Friday night. "We're looking at it as a must win," MVP LeBron James said before practice on Thursday. "It's obvious," Cavs guard Mo Williams said, echoing the must-win sentiment. "My grandma knows that. Yeah, it's a must win. Hell yeah." Behind a torrent of clutch 3-pointers -- the winner by Rashard Lewis with 14.7 seconds left -- and Dwight Howard's broad shoulders, the Magic muscled their way into Cleveland's noisy arena and rallied for a stunning 107-106 victory that might have altered the perception that the Cavaliers are the team to beat in the postseason. This is no smoke-and-mirrors Magic act. Orlando is the real deal. Howard set the tone by busting one of the shot clocks with a vicious dunk in the opening minutes, a we're-here-to-play moment that stunned a Cleveland crowd that later shuffled out of the building wondering what went wrong after seeing the Cavs lose on their home floor for just the third time in 46 games. After Thursday's practice, Howard, standing near the same basket, was asked if he was done breaking things. "No," he said, flashing a smile. "Not yet."

Despite the win, the Magic, who beat the 76ers in the opening round and eliminated the defending champion Boston Celtics in the conference semis, feel as if they're not being given a chance to win this series and advance to the finals for the first time since 1995. "I don't even think most of the nation knows that we're in this series," Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said after the Magic's light workout at Quicken Loans Arena. "This is the 'Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James series.' Who they are playing against is incidental. "It doesn't bother me and I don't think it bothers our guys. That's the way it is. Look, they won 66 games. They swept through two rounds of the playoffs. They've got the most valuable player in the league ... But it doesn't matter. "The bottom line is this is not the BCS, where people get to vote for who the best teams are. We actually get to play on the court to decide that." The Magic, a mercurial squad that can dazzle one minute and disappear the next, fell behind by 16 points in the first quarter of Game 1 and were down 15 at halftime. But urged by the fiery Van Gundy, they kept chipping away and fighting, and in the second half their shots began to fall.Orlando shot 59 percent after halftime, went 7-of-13 on 3s and outscored Cleveland, 59-43. Now 9-3 in their last 12 games against Cleveland, Orlando survived an ungodly playoff performance by James (49 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds) to hand Cleveland its first loss in nine postseason games. James has often maintained that a series doesn't truly begin until one team wins on the road. So, LeBron, is this one on? "Yep," he said. "It's already started."

The Cavaliers seemed to have shaken off any shock from the loss when they gathered at their suburban training facility to prepare for Game 2. The mood was typically loose during the portion open to the media. In the opener, James was bothered by leg cramps in the fourth quarter that became so severe he was forced to call timeout for treatment. He blamed part of his fatigue on the long layoff since the Cavs swept the Hawks, saying it was impossible to replicate the game-day adrenaline rush during practice. James said he was physically fine and mentally refreshed. "I hate to lose, so I was sick after the game," he said. "But today is a new day. I'm fine." With their superstar's shot dropping, the Cavaliers reverted to a bad habit they had seemingly abandoned. During stretches of the second half, James' teammates stood around on offense and watched him. There was little motion, ball movement or strategy. It was all LeBron, all the time. The Cavs weren't much better on defense as Howard pounded them inside and Lewis, who went 5-for-5 in the fourth, killed them from the perimeter. Howard was 14-of-20 (four of his shots were blocked) and Lewis finished 9-of-13, hitting his winning jumper with Cleveland's Anderson Varejao charging at him. "Rashard was the X-factor," said James, who might find himself guarding Lewis in Game 2. "He was huge. He hit every shot in the fourth quarter and every big shot: transition 3s, pull-up 2s, he nailed them." Orlando now wants to nail down Game 2. The Magic won the series opener at Boston, but didn't bring the same energy the next game and were beaten by 18. "We can't take this win for granted," Lewis said. "We have to come out more hungry and humble to try and get another one." If they can, the Magic, who played in the shadows of the Celtics and Cavaliers, will have everyone's attention. "I think people are starting to recognize that we are a good team, that we are for real and that we are contenders for an NBA championship," Lewis said.

Nuggets hold off Lakers, even up series
Kenyon Martin hit a layup in traffic with 29 seconds left and Chauncey Billups made 3 of 4 free throws to give the Denver Nuggets a 106-103 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night to even the Western Conference finals. The win in Game 2 ended the Lakers' 24-year playoff dominance of the Nuggets.

It was Denver's first-ever playoff victory against Los Angeles, which owned an 11-0 record dating to 1985, the second-longest postseason winning streak against one team in NBA history.

Nuggets foil Lakers to square series at 1
The Lakers' 24-year playoff dominance of the Denver Nuggets dissipated over the final 29 seconds of the fourth quarter. That's when Kenyon Martin hit a layup in traffic and former Piston Chauncey Billups made 3 of 4 free throws to give Denver a 106-103 victory in Game 2 on Thursday night to even the Western Conference finals. It was Denver's first-ever playoff victory against Los Angeles, which owned an 11-0 record dating to 1985, the second-longest postseason winning streak against one team in NBA history.

"To get one on the road is always tough. We came in and got it," Anthony said. "We're mentally tough and we showed that in this game coming off the loss that we gave away in Game 1."

Game 3 is Saturday in Denver. "I think this is going to be a long series," Denver coach George Karl said. The Nuggets recovered from poor free-throw shooting in a two-point loss in Game 1 to make 17 consecutive foul shots until Billups missed one with 4 seconds remaining. He hit the second to seal the victory. Derek Fisher launched a 3-pointer from the right corner that missed as time expired. Tied at 101, Martin made the layup off Nene's assist that gave the Nuggets the lead for keeps.

The Timberwolves hired former Pacers executive David Kahn to run their basketball operations, four days after being rejected by Portland assistant general manager Tom Penn .

Kahn fills the vacancy created when owner Glen Taylor moved vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale to the bench to replace fired coach Randy Wittman in December.

Double technical on Gasol and Martin for mixing it up a little under the basket. There's wasn't an altercation, just the officials working perhaps a little too hard to keep the game clean.

MAGIC MEN
Wrote a column the other day about Chauncey Billups. I almost wrote about Orlando and how it's been underrated all season by most people, including myself. I don't think the Magic can win the series but it would be wrong to simply dismiss their Game 1 win over Cleveland as a fluke. Orlando nearly won 60 games this season despite losing its point guard in midstream.

Everyone talks about Dwight Howard but what really makes the Magic difficult to play are their forwards. I'm not a big fan of the whole point forward concept but Hedo Turkoglu does that better than anyone in the league. Rashard Lewis is a dangerous offensive player - and should be, considering the size of his paycheck. He made a cold-blooded 3-pointer to win the game after LeBron got a cheap call which led to a 3-point play.

Their trio of shooting guards isn't bad. J.R. Redick played surprisingly well defensively against Ray Allen and Courtney Lee is a promising young player. But the guy who's really emerged is Mickael Pietrus, who has always shown flashes of ability and great athleticism. He never really put it together in Golden State and got hurt in his first year with Orlando but has really emerged in the postseason.

Fans riot as Panathinaikos wins Game 1
Panathinaikos beat archrival Olympiakos 69-67 in the opening game of the Greek League finals on Thursday, with riot police called to control fans inside and outside the arena.Former Atlanta Hawks swingman Josh Childress had 23 points for Olympiakos, the home team. "The violence we saw today, will make me think real hard over my future in Europe," said Childress, who signed a 3-year deal worth $20 million with Olympiakos in July.

The game was interrupted for nearly 20 minutes with 1:25 to play and Panathinaikos leading 60-58. Olympiakos fans threw a flare, plastic bottles and other items at Panathinaikos' bench during a timeout, sending the players scampering for safety. A timekeeper was slightly injured and part of the bench and the surrounding court had severe burn marks. Enraged fans were trying to storm the court and would not listen to the pleas of Olympiakos players for calm. Riot police moved in to contain the supporters. About 200 fans clashed with police after the game and even tried to storm the locker rooms and interview room where the coaches were meeting with the media.

Olympiakos guard Theodoros Papaloukas missed a layup at the buzzer that would have tied the game. "This did not help the team at all ... the moment you play and you have found a rhythm, you cannot stop because [of the violence] in the stands," Childress said. The second game in the best-of-five series will be at Panathinaikos' home court on Monday.

Shameless plug: As if Cavs fans didn't feel bad enough after Wednesday's loss, the game ended with James collapsed on the far end of the court, felled by cramps brought on by dehydration. He waited until the pain subsided, then walked off the court under his own power.

Thursday afternoon before practice he said he felt fine. He blamed the problem on the long layoff between series and revealed that he had cramped up during the first game of the Atlanta series as well after another long layoff. "One thing you try to do is stay hydrated," he said. "It was a long, mental and physical game last night and a lot of jumping, all those things took their course last night. With the nine days of layoffs, you can never simulate 20,000-plus fans and that type of game. My body just didn't adjust to it."

So, what do you drink -- water or Gatorade? "VitaminWater," said James, a pitchman for the product

Pacers Work Out NDSU's Winkelman
Brett Winkelman and his teammates had a motto that helped them stay focused at North Dakota State University: "We worked hard every single day," he said, ". . . as long as we can."

Winkelman, who worked out for the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, will have to stick with that motto if he expects to reach the NBA.

"It's a little bit tough when you don't get invited to Portsmouth and the pre-draft camp and things like that," said Winkelman, who averaged 18.6 points and 7.5 rebounds last season. "I'm just coming out here and working out; this is my opportunity to display my skills and hopefully turn a few heads."
