Defensive coach
The jazz need to bring in a coach that teach the jazz how to play shut down defence. Denver was one of the worst defensive teams in NBA and now they are one of the best. I think Defense has alot to do with attitude. Also trying to get Marcus Camby in trade would also help. Camby could protect the basket allowing the other players to play tigher defense on the outside.

Re: Defensive coach
Heh.
There is no more defensive coach than Jerry Sloan....although if it came to it and we were to git rid of Jerry and/or he was to retire, I would love to give Tom Thibodau (sp?) a look. If he can't get these guys to play defense, no one can.
What we need, really, is a tone-setter for the team. A guy that inspires everyone and gets their blood going. Two would be ideal. But I think one could do the trick.

Re: Defensive coach
Sloan was a good defensive coach in the era before the three point shot. He has not adjusted his rotations or thoughts even though we constantly get killed by it. Mediocre backups have careerr nights when faced with ourdefensive schemes. Some of that is the mindset of the players, but our rotations definitely place us at a disadvantage.

Exactly. I think most people would agree that Sloan WAS an excellent coach for many years, but I don't think he is up to the task now. Not to say our current players are all defensive stoppers....right now we have:
Below average defensive players + bad defensive schemes = porous defense.

Re: Defensive coach
No shot blocking.
I think it's quite simple. And not Sloan's fault as much as KOC's. Sloan was a better defensive coach with Eaton or Ostertag. Of course maybe Antoine Carr was one of the guys we had the most success with.
You can count on Boozer and Okur not leaving their feet to protect the basket from a player other than their own. Just just put their hands in their pockets and watch as slashers go in for dunks.
If we had a big protecting the paint our guards could do a better job closing out on the perimiter. As it stands letting a guy drive past them is worse than letting them shoot open 3s. Because it's a dunk fest (and maybe an And 1 if Boozer does his little love stroke in the back) if the offensive player gets past his own man.
This is the reason I stomach the idea of trades where we bring in flawed guys like Dalembert. We simply need that skillset added to the team.

"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Re: Defensive coach
What's funny is that the Jazz' defense isn't that bad. We are middle of the road, and yet people talk as if we are the Traveling Matador Band or something. At the beginning of the season, even, before Carlos got hurt, we were hanging in the 7-10 range. A performance like that, maintained for the entire season, along with us playing at the elite offensive level that we're capable of, would net us 60 wins. That was the plan going into the year, before the injuries started to pile up and all hell broke loose.
Having D-Will and his statue like defense from late Novemeber until mid-to-late January hurt us badly, and then when Millsap got hurt his defense fell apart; Booze comes back and becomes the horrid defensive player that everyone had always accused him of being, and AK wasn't the same after the ankle injury either.
Just a really bad series of events.
With all that said, if we could get a real dog to come in and get after people, I think it could turn the team around. Either a scrappy big like Varejao, Foster or McDyess or an aggressive wing. That could do it for us.

Re: Defensive coach
I o.k with keeping Sloan but the jazz should hire an assistant coach that is a defensive Guru. Maybe the jazz also could pry Camby with Harping and 21 pick .

Re: Defensive coach
I rather have an offensive coach to be honest with you. Run-n-gun system would make this team so scary, sure defense is important but its obvious we don't have the pieces with the current roster to be a defensive team. The fear when playing the Jazz is being crushed by their offense, this team will never be feared on defense.
